I reflected on Psalm 9 this afternoon and discovered that David appears to affirm his confidence in God dealing with his enemies, e.g.

Psalm 9:3
"When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence."

Now this may seem a bit like arrogance or presumption until you notice that David goes on to appeal to God's justice......

Psalm 9:4
"For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right."

I don't believe David would ever have appealed to God's justice to deal with his enemies unless he had first examined his own heart before God! Based on this, would it be right in thinking that if we examine our hearts in the light of God's Word and what it teaches on a given matter, e.g. as in the case of David in Psalm 9 - 'taking care of our enemies' - that we can be confident and rest in God's justice to take care of our enemies likewise so long as there is no known sin in our hearts which has encouraged our enemies?

Q - Is it a righteous confidence or is it arrogance to trust in such a way concerning God's Word?

I don't believe the Lord would have said this if David had an arrogance problem.

2Sa 7:8 "Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel.
2Sa 7:9 "I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.

when you think of Moses, do you think about his humility?

Num 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.)

Confidence in God is never arrogance.

one must examine what they are really putting their confidence in.
see mark 10:17-25

But I suppose the enemy, whoever is being the enemy at that time, might perceive it as arrogance. Satan may twist their perception to keep them from recognizing it as faith.

People will believe what people will believe. The Bible is never wrong. Now if you are talking about application in real life... we are human and prone to making errors. How we view life may be filtered by different beliefs or thoughts we hold on to that are not of God. Having done everything we can to take care of our responsibilities, we must leave everything else in God's hands. Our "enemy's" perceptions are then their own -- but as I said, ONLY after we have sufficiently dealt with our end of creating or promoting perceptions.

when a fool reads the bible, it is never right.

in fact, without the Spirit of God (especially love), the bible becomes nothing more than a tool to sharpen one's arrogance.

1Co 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

VERY TRUE but we are starting to move away from the OP.

my post was a response to someone saying the bible is never wrong.

I am saying that putting your confidence in the bible is NOT the same thing as righteous confidence.

didn't the pharisees already prove this?

No, the pharisees did not prove this. They proved that their "faith" was in legalistic twisting of the Bible, not of the Bible itself. Had they truly read the prophets and the Law and not blinded themselves for their own gain, they would have known the truth, the truth would have set people free, and they would have had righteous confidence.

We must learn to distinguish between what something is, and what our perceptions of what something is. The Bible is all and only and only ever exactly what it says it is. The Bible is never wrong, it is interpretations and twistings that are wrong. And yes, the Bible can only be read having the love of God in us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Without Him, we cannot read the Bible. People may read words, but they will not have truly read the Bible.

If someone has arrogant confidence in the Bible, they have not truly read it. They have missed it completely. They could have recite every word in every translation and still not have truly read the Bible.
