Hello All, I'm just wondering if anyone here is a Prophet/Prophetess? I was recently given a word by a Prophetess, and from what I know about what the bible says about the words you receive from Prophets/Prophetesses is that it should confirm what you already know? Is that true? Has anyone ever received words like this? Was it a confirmation?

sox: not sure which translation you are using, but I don't see the words "first century" in that verse. christsgirl: Certainly there can be a spiritual gift of prophecy (see 1 Cor 12-14) by which some people may be able to speak God's word to you. But you need to judge them to see if they are from God. Does the message line up with Scripture? Does it have the end goal of bringing you closer to God and/or exalting Jesus? Does it match the list in James 3:18 ("the wisdom that comes from heaven ...")? Is it spoken in love? If so it is probably from God. If not, virtually certainly not.

In I Cor 12 & 14, Paul speaks of the gift of prophecy and its use in the church. I believe this is a gift for today but it is a gift that has suffered abuse. Pride and prophecy are an ugly combination. Paul says of prophecy, "but one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation." Those are greatly needed in the church today. The gift of prophecy is not an easy gift to have as it often speaks correction to others. God will use this gift to grow you closer to Himself so that the opinions of man fall on deaf ears. I have heard 'prophetic words' spoken that were lies. I have also heard prophetic words spoken that were truths. That is why Paul cautions us to judge these words. Read the chapters in I Cor and let the Holy Spirit teach you regarding this gift. Bless ya.

Sometimes the two work together. Sometimes they do not. That would be my best advice to you would be check out what's said against God's Word.

How do I research what was said to me in The word? The word I received was VERY specific, and from what I know of the topic already, there is nothing in the word that could confirm/negate what this person told me. I suppose I'll just keep seeking God for His will in my life in this area, and ask Him to confirm this for me, if it did indeed come from Him.

Great post, LiveLoved! I second your advice to read I Corinthians to understand more about the Gift of Prophecy. I have the gift of prophecy and it is basically giving God's word without embellishment. It often is corrective, as we aren't perfect and don't always line ourselves up with God, and can be encouraging when you are lined up with God or feeling led to repent of something. It can be loving even when the recepient of it doesn't feel loved because the message doesn't line up with what they want to think and do- it is to line up with God, not human thought. A true prophecy from God will always bring you closer to Him and will never contradict His word- and I mean His word in context, not the spiritualized word and interpretations men give to His word.

I would say who needs it? You can read God's word and find guidance to make your own decision. The bottom line is that your decisions are yours. God won't send another person to control you. -------wintery.

Sad when people don't truly believe God's Word (the complete and absolute Bible) is enough for their lives. It has all we need. People LOVE to claim their a "Prophet" or an "Apostle" identical or better than the ones in Scripture. Hogwash.

Earthless: Not "better" or even equal to Scripture, certainly not. But that doesn't mean some messages specific to an individual can't come from God through another person. (Also I'd clarify that apostles certainly do not exist today, but prophets in some limited form can.) Usually I think the gift of prophecy is used to address sin that someone is trying to hide. It could perhaps be a confirming voice that, say, someone should go somewhere as a missionary (perhaps the person had been wondering in their heart if it was God's will but hadn't told anyone about it). Prophecy would NOT tell us something about God that Scripture does not already tell us!!! The book Surprised by the Voice of God by Jack Deere is pretty good on this topic. Lots of Scripture and personal examples and a look at Christian history.

christsgirl: I don't know how long you have to make a decision on the matter, but I would encourage you to read through the entire New Testament if at all possible. Then the Old. Going through the Bible is pretty important for a Christian!

PolarBear, Thank you for your reply - what is being confused here (as it always is in this kind of discussions) is the definition of what we mean by "Prophet". In addressing the question of apostles and prophets today, we must carefully define our terms. Certainly the church today needs church planters, missionaries, or leaders who act as pastors over other pastors. Fortunately, when some people say that the church needs "apostles" today, that's all that they mean. And while the usage of the term "apostle" is not biblical, certainly the church does need such persons. Likewise, when some people say that the church needs "prophets" today, they mean that the church needs Spirit-filled leaders who can inspire the church with a vision for its mission, or who can challenge the church to deeper commitment to Christ. And again, while this many not be the most biblical use of the term "prophet," there can be no doubt that the church does need such persons. On the other hand, if by "apostles" and "prophets" one means Christian leaders of the same kind as the twelve apostles or the apostle Paul, they are clearly mistaken. There are no church leaders today whose authority cannot be questioned, or through whom new doctrinal revelations are given to the church, or whose teachings must be accepted by all Christians.

Thank God it's not so much a "decision", per se, that I need to make; but rather an "acceptance" of something God has planned for my life, according to this person. I guess that time will tell, though, because this person says God says June is the month. So I guess I can choose to accept it or not. I don't know...I'm sure this probably sounds a little confusing since I've chosen not to disclose exactly what this person told me. But I will (continue to) read the Word of God everyday. Right now, I'm reading Job. Just because I've been going through some tests in my life, and I need to build my faith up in God. But maybe I should just start with Matthew?

There is a big difference between someone with a gift of prophecy and the offce of prophet. In 1 Cor 12 and 14 we see the operation of the gift of prophecy and are told that all can prophesy. In Acts 21.9-10 we see 5 people described as prophets: Agabus and the 4 daughters of Philip. With the exception of this brief warning to Paul, we have recorded NOTHING of their prophecies. (A NT prophet that did not write scripture!) There are other prophets listed (Silas, Judas) in the NT. THis is an office which has much more weight than just a gift of prophecy.

Personally, I am leary of what modern "prophets" say. Only because I do not know their history of prophecies. If they are not 100% accurate, then this person's prophecying is not of God. Sorry, I do not have a Scripture verse for you - and don't have time to look it up naw, but it's in there.

christgirl, Do not be decieved. The doctrine that there are no more prophets is wrong--it is a false doctrine that has been flying around the church for a while now. There are STILL prophets in the church. People who have a special gift of prophecy are often known as prophets. Apostleship still exists too. 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: --Ephesians 4:11-12 It is for the saints. As long as there are saints, they will need to be equipped and we are told that the whole reason He gave these offices/gifts were for the perfecting of the saints. To suggest otherwise would be to make the Bible out to be a lie. In fact it was foretold in the Old Testament quoted again in Acts: And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: --2:17 In fact, if you read in that scripture, it says IN THE LAST DAYS, which, I think we are living. Like the other gifts, it endures. They are gifts of the Spirit, as can be seen. God said he would pour out His SPIRIT on all flesh, hence, these gifts of the Spirit, which include prophecy are given to all believers regardless of gender or age as described, and also IN THE LAST DAYS. Some people do abuse such thing gifts (or the idea anyway), because I'm not sure if you can abuse a gift like that. If someone REALLY does have the gift of prophecy, you will know because what they say will come to pass. If they are telling a lie or guessed, or whatever, then you will know because it will NOT happen. In fact, the Bible does give some clear definitions on prophets. Here's the guideline, its found in Deuteronomy 13:1-4 You can also find a little on it in Numbers 14: Here's an excerpt from Deuteronomy: If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 13:2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 13:3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 13:4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. --Deut 13:1-4 Check out Deut 18, Numbers 12:6, Deut 13:1-6. 1st Cor 12, 14, James 3:18, Acts 12:9-10. Read these all, and study them. It will help you. Do not believe the false doctrines going around--read what it says in the BILBLE. God told us to study to show yourself approved. It is our job to dig into His word and find those answers. Definately, ask for help from a mature believer, or at least, ask for scriptures to point you in the right direction. Man can err, but God's word never does. Read the scriptures I've given you. Also a little thing to note. You should read Acts, especially the story of Paul's journey and his interaction with Agbus the prophet. Agbus rightly prophesied, but his conclusions were wrong. You see a prophet may SEE something in the future that is TRUE, but that does not mean he/she is qualified to ADVISE you on how to go. Additionally, that person may not fully understand what is is that will transpire. Remember, we see in part, as through a glass darkly. So they may tell you that they see you talking to a group of people about God, they may jump to the conclusion that God has made you a "great evangelist" that may not necessarily be true. What may actually occur, is that you are ransomed in a third world country and preach the gospel to a roup of rebels living in the jungle. But they were not shown all of this. Maybe what they showed you was enough for you to know that you need to study the "gospel salvation message" better so that you can present it accurately and thoroughly to someone. Only later will you find out exactly how that transpired. Read Acts, about Paul's journey. Read how the brethern warned him NOT to go to Jeruselem, and that even though God had told him to go, the prophet prophesyed doom. Someone can legitimately be called as a prophet, but NOT know how to deliever the message. I think that is part of the reason Prophets get such a bad rep in the Church. Well, because we say the gift doesn't exist, despite scripture after scripture that says otherwise. Then the individual has to go "underground" in the church. Seeking to be obedient, they may approach someone and tell them "a word." It might be true, but they have no fellowship, sheparding, discipleship, and confirmation in this gifting so they deliver it WRONG. They include their advice, what they think, etc. etc. The person they "prophesied" to is worste off than before they came--even if the news is good. Whenever you have a supression or a diefication of a gifting in a church, that means something is off balance. As believers we do not have the liberty to pick and choose what part of the Bible we will accept. Simply put, if you do not know how something operates, that does not mean it is not valid. It simply means you should not comment on the matter and leave it to others better qualified than yourself. That is my general rule, anyway. All gifts are in full effect as long as there is equipping necessary, and believe me, we've got a long way to go to equip the body. Study those scriptures I gave you prayerfully. God will show you, if you will listen with a yeilded and obedient heart.

A perfect example of a modern "prophet" is the preacher who told his congregation that the Lord had told him to tell them to give him (the preacher) two white Rolls Royces! Um, that would be false! That is the perfect example of a modern day "false prophet." Jesus warns about those incessantly throughout His time on earth. Evidently, He knew that among the REAL prophets, there would be the FAKE. That's why knowing the fruits of the spirit are so important. That is why knowing your Bible is so important. False prophets say all kinds of things . . . even that real prophets of God don't exist anymore or they need you to buy them a Benz. You only need check it with scripture to find the answer!

We had an entire thread dedicated to the challenge of naming even one living person today who holds the Office of Prophet. After three pages - not a single individual was listed.
