Something bit me and I don't know what. I've googled different bites and I've yet to figure it out. I felt a sharp biting sensation (I don't think it was a sting) on the underside of my upper right arm last Wednesday (10 days ago). It swelled for several days, itched and burned, and now it still itches intensely. The bite mark itself is only one puncture that I can see, and the puncture site is bruised now. As of today, the rest of my arm, from my armpit to my elbow, has a poison-ivy-looking rash (and I've never had poison ivy, so it's definitely the bite). Ick!!! What could've done this? I'm suspecting a fly?? I don't think it's spider.

if you have a rash all over the area, and you have swelling, and bruising from a bite several days ago, I think I'd be seeing a doctor.
I don't know what it could be.
Have you tried benadryl or anything on it? (I meant topical, but internal might also work)

Please go and see your doctor. Whatever it is, it sounds like the poison has spread and that it's infected.

I've put hydrocortisone and aloe topical stuff on it, but it just helps temporarily. I think I'll go to the doc monday, you'd think it would be getting better over 10 days, not worse.

And sometimes the bite can become infected!!!! This can be extremely dangerous! My dd gets cellulitis very easily and has been to the ER quite a few times because of it! No hospitalization, but almost one time.

Even with one puncture wound, it can still be a spider. Let us know what the doctor said!

I ended up not visiting the doctor. I was totally prepared to go on Monday, but on Saturday afternoon my husband's co-worker sent over a black-market Native-American herbal remedy (that smells like eucalyptus and goats!) for me to try. I applied that and also started taking the few days worth of antibiotic that I found in my pantry (from an infection earlier this year). The site still itches a little, but the redness disappeared within 12 hours after applying the incredible smelly gunk. So, by Monday there was no need to call the doc, although I was still fully prepared to if need be.
The guy who sent home the remedy swears by it. He was bitten by *5* brown recluse spiders at a job site and still has his arm wrapped up and is still regaining use of it after 3 years and $100,000 of surgeries. Eek! He nearly lost his arm! Scary spiders, those things are.

How many days? It needs to be a full course otherwise the danger is that the infection may not be completely eradicated, and could then return, antibiotic-resistant.
Also, for what kind of infection was the antibiotic originally prescribed?

About 4 days worth. The antibiotic is doxycyclene. Prescribed for sinus infection. Also commonly prescribed for some skin conditions.

Is it going away?
Dad and Nate both have itchy rashes after mowing/moving the wood pile last weekend. Dad's is going away (but then he's out of town, away from whatever allergic source it is) and Nate's is spreading. He's been putting tea tree oil on it, and I'm going to pick him up some Bum Butter today that's supposed to be good for anything skin related.

Yes, it's competely disappeared as of today. The only thing I can see is a tiny scab over the original puncture. Tell Nate to come get some of this remedy, I think it really had a hand in kicking it! Tea tree oil is something else I had thought of trying . . . . and I also took Oil of Oregano for a few days.

Doxycyclene is usually for bacterial infections, but AFAIK the only skin condition it's prescribed for is acne.
I'd suggest you take it for the full 4 days, as you've started, and then keep a close eye on the scab and general area after you stop.

I'll have Nate call you about the topical remedy and see if we can track it down here somewhere. I'm out of oil of oregano. Wish I could get it here in town and not have to drive into Tulsa.....

It's definitely not BR, thank goodness. I did research those and talk to a couple people who were bitten by those. The bites typically make a volcano blister within 12 hours or so and then start to turn black in the center. Ick!

I have no idea what it's called. It's not available OTC anymore. Have to get it from other sources, but I know I could get it from this guy. $10 for a container (like the old camera-film size).
