How many times is Israel to go into captivity? I know we can figure out how many times they have been captive by history, but is there a limit to the amount of times it will happen according to God's word? There are many instances where it says in the Bible this will happen. I have read the prophets. Has anyone here done any research on this? Or can you provide a link?

Thanks,

ICB

Thanks for the suggestion. Let the mods do as they wish. Seems like it has a lot to do with prophecy and end times to me though.

Well, you are certainly correct about that. I spend alot of time in Theo so am probably biased towards those forums...I don't even know why I posted my first post here, frankly

Hmm. Since right now you're looking for a specific answer and not the IMPLICATIONS of that answer, I'll stick it in The Bible for now. You may get more responses there.

I think that is what I was thinking. Sorry, Trish, not trying to take over your job. I am trying to learn self-moderation so much, I believed it spilled over into your area

And I know you know what I mean

Do you mean, "How many times was Israel removed from its land to a foreign land?" I ask it that way because several times Israel remained in its own geographical boundaries but was governed by an outside power.

Do you want to include Israel's enslavement/captivity in Egypt? At that time, technically it wasn't a nation.

We know from history, Israel, the people have been conquered, captive and or exiled. They were oppressed many times in some shape or form regardless of statehood. In reading the Prophets, we see time and time again how Israel is told they will go into captivity or be conquered. The scriptures even go into detail and tell us how long some events will last. Ezekiel is a good example of this. I guess I'm trying to find out how many times was/is Israel (including Judah when they were divided) destined to oppression and of those how may have occurred per scripture. Much of scripture overlaps and tells of or eludes to the same events. I have also read that when a particular event is mentioned more than once in the Bible, it can mean that it happens more than once, while other times some scripture references another.

All your thoughts and input helpful.

How many times? never bothered to count but I can tell you one thing. How many are left. And that is one. And it is still running at the moment. And it even has a proper name. It's called the curse of Malachi. Here is the verses in Malachi to look at.

Malachi 4 verses 5 and 6.
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

And the big question here is "Was John the Baptist Elijah the prophet." And even though he denied it from the evidence I would have to say he was. And Herod may have pulled off the biggest mistake in the entire bible. It would appear that John the Baptist had a bigger role to play back then but never got the chance because of his death.

But how do you find this curse? You have to understand how Leviticus 26 works and then read the book of Hosea. But the upshot of it all? According to Hosea 6 verses 1, 2, and 3 the Jews were to face 2 days of being torn down followed by a day of healing and living in his sight. Which makes no sense until you look at those verses and reference 2nd Peter 3-8. Those days are thousand year periods of time.

The last curse of the Jews was to last 2000 years.

According to the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (http://www.studylight.org/enc/isb/):

The causes of the Dispersion most obvious to the student of Old Testament history were the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities, when the king of Assyria carried Israel away into his own land and placed them in Halah, and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes (2Ki_17:5); and when in the reign of Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, Judah was carried away into Babylonia (2Ki_24:14). See CAPTIVITY. But there were other captivities which helped to scatter the children of Abraham. Ptolemy I of Egypt (322-285 bc) by his expeditions to Palestine and his capture of Jerusalem added largely to the Jewish population of Alexandria. Antiochus the Great of Syria (223-187 bc) removed from the Jewish communities in Mesopotamia and Babylon 2,000 families and settled them in Phrygia and Lydia (Josephus, Ant, XII, iii, 4). Pompey after his capture of Jerusalem in 63 bc carried off hundreds of Jews to Rome, where they were sold as slaves, but, afterward, many of them obtained their freedom and civic rights.

You might also check (as the portion of the article I cited suggests) Captivity, as that has a lot of details as well.

If one looks at the current canon of Scriptures as a single book, it can get confusing since we are used to reading a book from beginning to end. with a few flash backs and flash forwards. The Scriptures are really a topical anthology, collection of writings arranged based on the nature of the work. To get an understanding of the timeline in the Haftorah(Poetic books, histories and prophets) one would look at the books of 1&2 Samuel and 1&2 Kings compared 1&2 Chronicles. The prophet usually refer to the ruler of the time when they are writing. The revelations in the Prophetic writtings need to be looked at in context of the writers circumstance. Admittedly sometimes even that gives few clues, but it's a start. No wonder there are so many different interpretations of the various revelations.

Regarding the Apistolic writing, my brother wrote a timeline book on them for his doctoral thesis. Unfortunately, my college professor published his version just before my brother finished his thesis.
