Could use any advice

While I was still living at home, I had somewhat of a routine when it comes to eating. On schooldays breakfast, lunch at school with snacks during breaks, sandwich after school and dinner with entire family in the evening. Weekends would be a bit different. I wouldn't always have breakfast, but on Saturdays have lunch with my parents and dinner with the whole family in the evening. Sundays would be a hot lunch and maybe a sandwich in the evening.

Now I've been living in a different country for the past 4 years. I'm a flight attendant and I have a flatmate who works for the same airline. Last year I had some issues with a sensitive stomach. I had gastroentritis a few times. I stay away from spicy foods as we never used to eat spicy. Also I tend to feel like throwing up when I'm overtired. In a 28-day working schedule, I have 8 days off. Some days I can spend munching an entire box of cereal. Some days I just eat a few sandwiches. Sometimes I actually I make a proper dinner.

I guess what I'm looking for is support. Advice, tips and ideas to help me eat properly at least on all my off days and to achieve a healthy eating habit and maintain it. To not get discouraged. I can't cook when I'm on a block, but depending on the destination I go out for a proper meal or order room service. Inflight... depends on the length of the flight. When returning to Bahrain, we sometimes have the chance to order our meal for the flight back and 9 times out of 10, I'll chose the fruit platter. Otherwise, I don't always eat during the flight. I know the company doctor is there for me and she told me I can always come to see her or any of her colleagues to get a push in the right direction. But I don't want to bother them, waste their time just cause I need a push.

Thank you in advance for any help

If you have a company doctor, use her. She'll have come across this problem before and will probably have some simple ideas on how you can manage your diet and schedule.

Can you explain what you mean when you say 'I can't cook when I'm on a block'? What's a block?

Well, I've been to her but she didn't seem to be able to really help. I know that with something you want to change, it takes time. You can't change it from one day to another.

A block can be one day where I do up to 4 flights (short ones off course) and just warm whatever catering provides for the crew. I could be working for 12hrs before going home and then the mood to eat is pretty much gone, except for maybe something small and sometimes I'm just too tired to cook. A block can also be 3 days long, where I fly to Europe or Asia, spend a day at that destination and then fly back. You can't really cook in a hotel. For India my choices of room service are limited as I don't eat spicy and I see enough curries on the flight over to India And to always order room service.... it feels like eating the same thing every day

Some people can change their eating habits overnight, but I think for many it's easier to change a step at a time, as you say.

I've done long days before (being out of the house for 13+ hours a day) and so can identify with your feelings.

There are meals and foods that you can cook quickly though and are good for you. If you have a freezer, you can easily freeze meals. Soup is pretty good for freezing and can be reheated in the microwave from frozen pretty quickly.

Have you talked to your flatmate about this? Does she have the same problem? If she does (or even if she doesn't) it may be worth you comparing schedules and planning meals and shopping so that they're shared instead of you being independant of each other. Not sure how you do things now though, so you may already do that.

I think that you wanting to start with improving things on your days off is the way to go. How about planning just one proper meal a day, each day you are off? Or if you and your flatmate are off on the same days, you each cook 1 day.

Well I understand it is hard to manage eating right... What I started doing since I play soccer and work and have a side business I never have time to cook. I started packing my lunch and healthy snacks if you have time to do this each night try that if not; I carry apples stuff like that with me in my purse; lol might sound crazy but I have actually lost weight instead of stopping at mcd's really quick I grab that apple. Good luck~!

I think with a schedule like yours you've got to plan ahead. You can't let yourself get stuck, hungry, with no options but bad ones. Carry protein and/or granola, bars, fruit and things like that. It sounds like you basically know what's good and what's bad, you just have to get a little more organized to be able to avoid the bad and give yourself better options by planning for those times.

Is it possible that in these foreign countries you are eating something that your body is not accostomed to. The water maybe or something else that has caused the few bouts of intestinites. Sometimes one can pick up a parasite or worm that lives in your intestinal tract that causes problems. I have heard of herbal formulas that can cleanse this out of the system.

Find out what causes you food allergy and write it down. Is it beans, pulses, or spices? Then either cut it out or eliminate them.

Pack up healthy food the night before and take them with you in the morning before you go.

Better still, since you work as flight attendant, many airline companies actually customize their food to client's preferences, so perhaps you could ask them to tailor them according to your preference.

Sorry agapetos but I would recommend against doing this. It is a fact that most M.D.'s know very little about nutrition. I have had several of them as clients and admittedly they study very little about nutrition in medical school.
Tashilein I have had many clients over the years that traveled extensively for their jobs and have dealt with some of the same issues you describe. I will be happy to offer some advice and alternatives that should benefit you. This is a crazy week for me and I am still finishing up programs for a few other friends that I assist online so give me 10 days or so.
Plus I know your on holiday and nobody wants to have to eat TOO healthy while on vacation anyway..

Well... holiday or not... I'm still going to try to go healthy a little. Don't want to gain too much and I'm already on "the watch list"... And my tummy looks more like a pregnant tummy... I could seriously pass for 3 months... when I go to Paris and I don't want to stand in line at the supermarket. They have special lines for the disabled and pregnant ladies... I figured that out after having to wait for over 30min cause off "sorry I'm expecting"-women... Oh ... if only it was true for me... then I'd already be married.... /slap myself and force myself to wake up

Anyway regarding things that my body is not accustomed to... The meat is cut to muslim rituals but I doubt the way they cut, makes it different. Only drink bottled water cause the tap water isn't drinkable. Wouldn't I have more probs if I had a parasite or worm? My stomach might feel upset once in a while, but the actually throwing up has only happened a few times and there was quite a gap between the several incidents (at least a month) and at times I know it was simply cause of overtired.

I think it would be too difficult to tailor my crew meal with the changing schedules. We do have a menu to chose from when we go to certain destinations for the flight back like London, Frankfurt so that's "hello fruit platter"-time.

But thanks for the tips

MDs also generally know little about how to achieve behavior changes.

I agree with the person who said that planning ahead is going to be the main key.

You are going to have to plan what you will eat, and when, not just be subject to whatever is available and whenever.

What can I say, I'm spoilt with my GP.

I was actually posting in relation to this specific posters issues though, not as a general observation. The doctor was/is a company doctor and should have a certain area of speciality in the kind of probem that the op is facing. My psychiatrist used to know a lot about thyroid meds but over the years he admits his knowledge is probably outdated so prefers me to see my GP about them. She knows a fair bit about psych meds, but prefers me to see him about them.

If it had been an ordinary GP, in an ordinary situation, I'd have suggested a dietitan. And perhaps this is a possibility.
