Hello. I know that there have been a gazillion posts on the topic of fasting, but my question has to do with a personal question concerning it. I just feel like I should be taking some time out for fasting, or that God is asking me to fast. But, I don't know what for and I don't really know how. How, meaning like....what to fast, when, and what to do as I fast. Like, if I fast food, it does me no good as far as praying instead of eating goes cuz I only eat when I'm at work. - About one or 2 meals a day. But, I'm so focused on work that praying, or focusing on God is not something I can do. I can understand fasting during the day in order to see some desired changes in different areas but, I"m just not sure that's what God wants me to do. I just feel like if I decide or feel in my heart that I need to fast to get my mind focused on God,I should be using the time that I'm not eating, or whatever it is I'm fasting in order to pray or whatever goes with seeking God. But, I pray and seek God already.... I wonder if there is a bible study or just a general study on fasting. I don't mean on "how to fast" or "different types of fasts" but more like a "journal" with questions guiding you on your fast. I don't know.... I just need direction in life and feel like fasting is prob. something I really need to be doing.

"I'm just not sure that's what God wants me to do." God doesn't want you to do anything. There's nothing we can do to repay what He has done for us. Perhaps we should love Him and love our neighbour - as Jesus taught us. That aside. Before you fast you need to consider the job you do, your age and the state of your health. For some people, fasting can be risky if they work with machinery/vehicles or if their health just can't take it. Here's a suggestion. Why don't you make a list of all the things you enjoy every now and then (chocolates, popcorn, ice cream, soda, buying music CD/DVDs etc ...). Give them up for a week or so and the money you save you give to charity. Now that's a fast that will do you and others good. And it will make God smile.

John 3:27-"John(the Baptist)answered, “No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him. 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice; therefore this joy of mine is now full.” Good thoughts, mvic. Fasting, generally, isn't to be used as penance to convince God how 'spiritual' or resolved one is(he knows that already)but to increase our reliance on His Will, obedience and Victory.

I felt the same way when I did my first fast. I knew that God was asking me fast, but I wasn't sure if I was supposed to do a juice fast, a water fast, or just give up one meal a day and I wasn't sure what he wanted me to fast for. At work if I had given up my meals I would have continued to work rather that take that time to devote to God. Here is what I decided was right for me. I did a juice fast for 5 days. During the time when I would have been eating a meal I took that 10-15 min to shut my office door or go for a short walk just to say here I am God and I'm listening. I found that I like to take that time out of my day just to collect myself and be quiet with the Lord. It helps me keep my priorities in line. I think that he wanted me to fast to find out that I needed him in my life everyday even when I'm busy at work. Now, when I'm not fasting, when the smokers take their "smoke break" I step away for my "break". I like being able to just slow down for those few minute. I hope that I have been able to help you, but really no one has to be comfortable with it but you.

I needed to fast for something at church and I can't fast food for medical reasons. So the Lord told me to fast my most favey thing: Nascar racing. Sigh . . . I said, what? How about if I take a chance with food? Nope, Nascar racing. So I can't watch any races until Sept 7th. Then christmas play is coming along soon and God told me to fast football. Sigh . . . So what I do is during Nascar races is I pray for the first hour, then read the word for the second hour. After that I don't turn on the race at all. It's HARD!! Especially when all my co-workers are talking about the race. So I have to trust God to keep my fingers from the remote and pray instead. But I see God moving b/c of it. So you don't have to fast food, fast what you love the most. And during that time, pray and read the word. quote:
