I am wondering if there is anyone else out there that has had wierd things happen to their body after giving birth like food allergies or fainting spells.

After giving birth to my youngest son, who is now 7, I started having sevearl medical problems. Before giving birth I started getting toximia, pre-eclampsia. The problems started with diziness and then fainting spells, then pains throughout my entire body (like someone was stiking a needle in my arm and moving it around. Then on top of that I almost died from drinking soy milk. I was rushed to the ER and after 3 shots of epinephrine I was able to breathe again.

In 2003 I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and then a year later I was tested for food allergies. I tested positive for allergies to soy, tomatoes, potatoes, rice, corn, apples, peaches, oranges, peanuts, almonds, brazil nuts, pistachios, legumes, melons, and several other things. Some of the foods cause my throat to swell & close up so I stay away from those, but others just cause my body to ache for about 3 days after I eat them. I get tired of eating salads & bland meat so I sometimes cheat & eat potatoes, or chinese, or mexican food, but then I pay for it.

I know that God is allowing me to go through this for a reason & I wish that he could just heal me or help me. There is no medicine for me to take to help with my food allergies/intolerances, just avoidance. There are times when I feel like I have had all I can take but God gives me strength to make it through another day.

Frustrated

I haven't had kids yet but giving birth is a major trauma to your body and that can change things.

Allergies aren't understand by doctors. You can develop a new one at any time and they can also go away and they can't figure that out, plus allergies esp food allergies are increasing.

Did you ever get tested for celiac?

You may want to see a dietitan, they are trained to give you menus that work with your food allergies and keep up your vitamin levels.

It may not have had anything to do with you giving birth, or even the pre-eclamsia. Sometimes our bodies just become sensitive to certain foods.

There are many things that you can eat other than 'salads & bland meat'. Go to the library and get cook books and look through them and learn about foods that you can and can't eat. You'll often find you can substitute foods for things you can eat.

I became intolerant of dairy, wheat, gluten, yeast, eggs and cashew nuts after two pregnancies. These were things I'd craved during my pregnancies, so I personally think they are connected.

Having cut them all out totally for 6 months, I was able to start reintroducing small amounts to see what I could tolerate. I can now eat a small amount of most things each or every other day, but never milk.

Are all of yours allergies or are some intolerances?

If you give us the full list here, maybe we could help with different ideas for things to eat.

I have adult-onset food allergies (milk, peanut, treenut, soy, legumes, beef, pork). Well, actually, I did later figure out that I was allergic to milk since infancy, but I had eaten it since then, and told I "outgrew" it. It was just that we didn't realize a lot of my symptoms were from the milk.

I have learned to not think about the foods I can't eat & just enjoy the ones I can. There are even specialty allergen-free foods now that you can find if you want a substitute for something like chicken nuggets.

You might want to be sure that you are truly allergic to each item, though. Depending on the type of test, it could be a false positive. If there is no history of reaction, there is no reason to remove a food based on positive a test (But, of course, follow your drs advice!). Now... if you have "mystery symptoms," then you can eliminate those foods and return them to the diet one by one to see if you can tolerate it (ONLY those that you DON'T have a known reaction to!) if your doctor says it is okay.

An IMPORTANT note: Someone with a milk allergy should NOT drink lactose-free milk products. Those are for people with lactose intolerance, not an allergy.

I have also heard it is a good idea to keep your diet varied if you have multiple food allergies to prevent others from developing. So... IOW, don't eat cauliflower every day...

Based on: soy, tomatoes, potatoes, rice, corn, apples, peaches, oranges, peanuts, almonds, brazil nuts, pistachios, legumes, melons, and several other things; here are some things I eat.

Chicken & seafood- prepared many different ways: lemon sauce, baked, grilled, breaded, with gravy
Curry is a great substitue for tomato sauce: saute olive oil & garlic/herbs/spices with some onions and peppers, add some water, then simmer till saucy, puree if needed.
For sides: Squash (spaghetti squash is a great substitue for pasta!), veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, etc), yams/sweet potatoes should be ok, but check with dr.

Pizza! You can put any toppings on. If I eat it without the cheese, you can eat it without the sauce! :)

Oatmeal/granola

You didn't list eggs, wheat, or milk! That's good, as they are hard to avoid!

It is hard to find plain bread without soy- but making your own isn't that hard. I'd buy a bread machine. You can make tortillas and pancakes and muffins...

Be sure to read all labels and watch for cross-contamination.

BTW- I also had pre-eclampsia with my first (I was unconcious for several days after the birth) but my allergies weren't discovered until several years after that.

You can find great info on some food allergy websites. One I like is foodallergiegourmet.com. It can be kind of fun to figure out what you can substitute and come up with for recipes. One really helpful substitute is for corn allergies, since we can't have baking powder, you can use 2 parts of baking soda and 1 part cream of tartar. This allows you to come up with all kinds of different breads. I used to try to come up with one or two new recipes a week, some went very well with all of the substitutions and some didn't, but in the end it was worth the effort. Best wishes!

that's what I was going to ask too...sounds like nerve damage of some kind (I have nerve damage in my neck...known as Bell's Palsy...which causes paralysis in my face and it feels very much like you describe). I have a friend with fibro and she does not ever describe the pain of it like that (but that could just be a difference in the body's reactions). The thing with fibro though is there really isn't a test for it....it's more of an eliminate everything else so it must be fibro kind of thing. So they could be wrong about the diagnosis very easily. I would definitely see if there is anything else you could be tested for just to make sure you have covered all bases...kwim
