Hope its cool to leave this link, we are trying to reach as many music fans as possible.
If you could bring a dead rock star back to life for one gig, who would it be?
John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Kurt Cobain, Buddy Holly, Freddie Mercury? Or someone else?
This Day in Music are carrying out a world-wide survey to see which dead rock stars people would want to see again - for one night only!

Ok, I'll bite, I wonder how much music would have been different if Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritch Valens hadn't died in that plane crash?
Also, if Elvis was still around today I wonder too, not to mention John Lennon's untimely death also.

For one day: Elvis. So he could tell all the whackos he's dead already!
Really doesn't matter, the ticket prices (and PPV costs) would be through the roof so I wouldn't see them anyway.
Humble's direction is more interesting (how would music's history be changed if a key person didn't die?).
Hendrix: I think we didn't see the best he could do by a long shot. His incredible guitar playing was only part of his package.
Elvis: He was on the way down. I think he would have only tarnished his legacy but not terribly so.
John Bonham: This is more an issue of if Led Zeppelin continued. Zep was also on the downward spiral, the last couple of studio albums weren't as good as those before. I think they would have made more music but it wouldn't have added to their legacy. The one thing those is that part of their mystique is due to when Bonham died they quit. Period. Aside from a few shows in over 25 years. All of them huge ticket shows.
Freddy Mercury: Lets give him good health as well. Queen was still viable but again their best days had probably past. Like Zep I think which is more but not really better music. No tarnish to their legacy.
Jim Morrison: From what I've learned he seemed to be on a path to self destruction anyway. I don't think that can be separated from his music. They did end on a high note "LA Woman" i believe so they may have had another great record in them.
Kurt Cobain: See Morrison. But they were still growing as a band. With only a few albums its hard to tell how they were trending as there isn't enough data to establish a trend. The "Unplugged in New York" shows there may have been more to Cobain. Of course we also wouldn't have the Foo Fighters. The reader will have to decide if the trade off is worth it.*
* Easily offended person alert: the tradeoff is strictly about Nirvana for Foo Fighters. Of course it wold be better if Cobain were still alive in any case.

Ronnie Van Zant - like SRV, he began a new life of sobriety right before the Skynyrd plane crash. He was slated to start producing bands and had talked of leaving Skynyrd and rock music in exchange for a shot at country music and a style of music that became popular many years after his death, country rock heavily influenced by the early southern rock bands like Skynyrd and the Allmans and Outlaws.
The post-plane-crash Skynyrd sure hasn't been the same without him, that's for sure. Sadly, they're little more than a cover/tribute band these days.

I know that this thread is about dead rock stars, but if I want to bring a star to life, I would consider someone like Minnie Ripperton, who is the mother of Mya Rippington who's on SNL. I believe this lady was ahead of this time and many of the female R&B performers--Mariah Carey for instance imitates her 8-ovtave style of singing.
I would also bring back Bo Diddley because of his influence on rock and roll. Or maybe Janis doing a duet with Alanis.

I would also bring back Marvin Gaye back from the dead. His songs after his death has been used in a variety of ways..

Especially "Mercy Mercy Me" for the environmentalists. I think he'd approve the cause but I don't know about how people have gone about it.

Randy Rhoads was about to leave rock and roll anyway for classical music, but when he told Ozzy about his decision, he punched Randy in the face!! Maybe that was one reason why he really wanted to leave Ozzy's band. Who knows what music and metal would have been like if he had stayed on. He was very knowledgeable about music and taught them a few things about music theory. Plus, he looked awesome in those bell-bottoms.

Funny thing about alternate reality is that there are so many different paths. I'm sure your analysis of Burton is spot on but there's the other three guys to consider. Things change. But I imagine its hardly a coincidence that Metallica started on the more commercial road ("And Justice For All") after he died and went full bore into it with their followup, the (so called) black album.

I'd go for Jimi Hendrix.
He died too soon. Derek Prince's ministry had been contacted by Hendrix concerning Jimi's growing awareness of a demonic element harrassing him and manipulating his playing. He was scheduled to meet with Prince for ministry as soon as he got back from the tour. The last night before returning he died.
If he had become a believer......

He never considered himself any kind of star, that's one of the things that made him so great, but his talent was certainly big enough to rate "star" status.

All of the deceased Funk Brothers - the best backing band there ever was. Not rockers per se but they WERE the Motown sound and responsible for influencing countless musicians, rockers and otherwise.

Big record companies? Wasn't he selling his stuff for whatever you could afford long before Radiohead did it?
I'm sure the people who run these companies would be happy he's alove but he wouldn't be good for business.
