I've been struck recently by the idea that in the end we will answer to an audience of One (our Heavenly Father). And if that is the case, why do we get our shorts and knickers in a knot about the opposite sex, about singleness vs dating vs married. Why do we try to people please, why do we try to please our churches and our dates and our families and ourselves. When we try to make everyone else happy we make no one happy. If we lived for the One that matters most, we would be happier, content people with perspective and priorities in the right place. Especially when it comes to relationships. That other person's (or date or bf/gf)opinion/rejection /love/hate/indifference is really not that important compared to eternity. You should not give those other people the power to control how you feel about yourself. You are living for an audience of One. Thoughts?

I would argue that while our highest loyalty and devotion should be to God, we need relationships with other human beings. It's the way we were designed; God created us in His image, and He exists in perfect community with Himself (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Remember, after creating Adam and before the entry of sin into the world, God said "It is not good for the man to be alone." Even with an unblemished relationship with God, something was missing. A life without deep, meaningful relationships with other people (or even one person) is indeed a miserable existence. -Robb

what i got from this post was, why do we worry so much about pleasing others when the only one we need to worry about pleasing is God. i get that. and i agree. we do give others way too much power over us when we worry so much about what they are thinking or what they think of us or what we have or have not done, etc. just live for God completely and all things should fall into place.

Although we can be miserable when we are lacking relationships we can choose to not be miserable while we work on establishing those relationships. We can either curse the darkness or light a candle. I also agree that relationships are a necessary part of life. Family, friends, lovers.....they all serve a different purpose in our lives and I think they all point to a different aspect of God's love for us. It is when we stop focusing on God and focus on those other people more that we get in trouble. Boundries are sooooooooooo important! It is not until we realize and start working on our relationship with God that our relationships take a better turn. How can we REALLY love and take care of each other the way we are supposed to when we are not focused on and loving God first?

Yup, you guys interpreted it right. I meant about the priorities, and it is a point well received that we are meant to be in relationships. I didn't mean that we shouldn't have relationships or that they don't matter. But rather they need to be put in the right perspective. Both people but especially guys need to look to God's standard and guidance before their girlfriend's or a guy could mess it up for both of them.

Of course, we are made for relationships with people ... but our relationship with God should be first! I was listining to THIS SONG today, and was reminded of this thread .... Why are you looking for love Why are you still searching as if I'm not enough To where will you go child Tell me where will you run To where will you run 'Cause I'll be by your side Wherever you fall In the dead of night Whenever you call And please don't fight These hands that are holding you My hands are holding you
