Why is it humbling for a man to ask for directions?

It's not a question of being humble, I know where I am going! : )

For some guys, asking directions is equivalent to giving up or losing. For them, finding the way without assistance is a challenge or a game. Other guys see this behavior as an inefficient use of time and stop for directions. Usually, I fall into the latter category because I like being places early or on time. On the rare occasion that I'm going to arrive extra early and have nothing to fill the time, I'll sometimes fall into the former category (if I don't have directions or get lost).

I have guys, even truck drivers, stop in our office all of the time asking for directions.

As for myself, I use a GPS and my lap top when I need directions. Besides, appraisers never get lost... we merely check out demographics before arriving at our destination.

i like maps, so i would prefer to find my way on a map rather than asking directions. i am a visual learner when it comes to finding my way, and a map helps me gain a perspective of how far to go, how the road bends (and using that as a landmark), and using other spacial relationships along the route to find my way. i frequently use google earth/maps to view my route using the satellite images, and go by that.

if i ask directions, i'd be more likely to forget them, and i dont find verbal directions to be as useful as looking over a route on a map, because verbal directions dont give me the perspective.

It's not about being humbled. It's that I see no reason to believe some arbitrary person on the street will direct me any better than I can myself.

One of my (ornery) friends used to work at a gas station. Tourists would sometimes stop and ask him for directions and he would deliberately send them the wrong way. He thought it was really funny. He is not unusual either -- there are lots of jerks in the world.

So, there is no reason to trust another person for directions unless I have no other choice. It's about trust, not about ego.

For me, asking for directions makes me feel like I'm incompetent and that I'm giving in to my frustrations. I already feel incompetent and frustrated enough in other parts of my life. I just figure that in our age of maps, GPS, and street signs everywhere, I oughta be able to get from point A to point B. Plus, I have a pretty good track record of sorting things out and getting where I'm going on those occasions where I've gotten a little lost.

It's the challenge, the learning, and the desire to achieve. The pride at success! Which is one of the reasons men enjoy work (also, we were created to work the garden, so it makes sense that success and achievement at what we have done mean so much and failure means so much (in the bad way) too.)

I don't mind stopping to ask for directions. I don't really "like" driving, so the sooner Ican get where I'm going the better to me.

From my (guy) friends that do mind, I hear it's the same as why women refuse to put the toilet seat back up.

I wouldn't know. I ask for directions whenever I need them.

No. I admit it when I need directions: both spiritual and physical.

I spent many years in field service and have an excellent sense of direction. I rarely if ever had to ask for directions but did when I had to.

B/C of the "jerks" I usually got directions from fire stations, police stations/officers or road commision crews or offices all of these people know where just about everything is and have no reason to steer you wrong.

Good point. Thinking back to my prior career, I got a lot of people flagging me down when on duty in the rescue truck to ask for directions.

I don't know, I don't have that problem, but I have never been lost . Seriously, I try to get my directions before I leave the house, but if I need to stop, then I stop.

But I guess some men take that as an assault on their manhood or something.

I align with this answer the most. It isn't that a guy will NEVER ask for directions, its just that he wants to try and solve the problem on his own until he has exhausted his resources and cunning.

Men are spacial thinkers and and cognitive (do the problem in your head) problem solvers and finding one's way in unfamiliar territory is an excellent exercise in a skill that has become unnecessary in normal everyday life (since we no longer go out hunting, scouting new territory, and launching projectiles at other people.) The reason why men don't ask for directions relates a great deal to the reason men are so into sports. Both challenges allow us to engage in activity that we are good at and which we get few opportunities to pursue in the mundane existence of industrialized society.

Ditto.

Two needs built into a man is to hunt and to explore. In the quest of the hunt for the place, he discovers other things he did not know and files them away for use in the future.

So ladies rather than set there and nag or complain. Enjoy the trip and watch how the male mind works.
