The purpose of this thread is to talk of post pardum issues with both mom and baby. Please keep issues to the post pardum time frame (generally speaking that is 6 weeks, some issues it could be longer...until full healing).

Status: offline 		My back is still quite sore where the epidural was...I am now 8 weeks post pardum...

I asked my OB about it at my 6 week checkup and she said it could still be sore, but to ask my family doctor, because she doesn't do back pain

Just wondering if there is something wrong, or if it might go away eventually? Anyone else?

my first epidural was put in wrong, and I can still feel it even now 8 years later. I hate that...but I still get one. I figure I have already messed up my back with it now, so why worry about that again.

Usually mine heals though very slowly...I think with one of the girls it was about 4 months that I could still feel the bruising from it and a slight twinge of pain every once in a while.
I would say ask your hubby to see if it's bruised still...if it is then ice may help with the pain. If it isn't then maybe it's just a bit deeper of a bruise. Does taking a hot shower and letting the water pulse on it help? Maybe that would help some.
Take Tylenol when you need to.

Status: offline 		It mostly feels stiff when I bend forward, and it hurts when I bend backwards. The hot water in the shower seems to help with the stiffness.
So it's "normal" or "common" for it to still be sore for a while then?

It should go away eventually, every woman takes different times to recover from it. My SIL told me she knew someone who was experiencing pain from it years later (like Sarah).

Check with your family doctor, or do you have a phone line that you can call? We have Telehealth Ontario where you get a nurse 24 hours a day, if you have something like that, call them and see what they recommend so you don't have to leave the house.

Yolanda,

My back was actually sore in the spot from the epidural for the first few months after I had Jael. Now, it's not so much sore, as in bruised, from the epi. but I still have stiffness if I'm bent over changing diapers or picking up toys and Jael's now just shy of 7 1/2 months old.

Status: offline 		all four of mine have been in different places in my back, and I can feel the four places when I bend over or strain my back even today. It's normal. It really doesn't stop me from doing much beyond just bending...I can't lean over very much. That's one reason I love the Moby wrap so much because it doesn't hurt my back like every other carrier I have tried over the years seemed to do.

Status: offline 		I had an epidural (topped up twice - unsuccessfully, but that's another story!) with my 2nd child and had absolutely no pain or discomfort afterwards, not even any tenderness.

I had more discomfort (and permanent damage) after my general anaesthetic Caesarean (from being hoisted around before I got all the feeling back, and from uncomfortable pillows which made me lay awkwardly) than I did from the epidural.

Status: offline 		I had bruising at the site and soreness for about 2 weeks afterwards, what lasted the longest was residual numbness in my bladder, I didn't get any sensation back for 4-6 weeks.

Many of you know that we have friends who have one adopted child and one bio (7 months apart in age!) and that the birth parents of their adopted child got pregnant again and wanted to also give up this baby.

Well, the child I believe, has been born, and they have flew out days ago for the birth, and as long as they baby is old enough (must be at least 7 days old), they will be back in time to celebrate Thanksgiving as a family of 5!

That must sound so odd, though "Well, I'm flying to California to pick up my new baby..." We're very happy for them.

So that's what that is! I thought this back pain was from a fall that I had a few years ago! I'm sure the fall isn't helping it ...

Status: offline 		I'm still so sore from my c-section! When can I expect the pain to go away?? Also, my dr. prescribed Percocet and knew I was bf'ing...is it really safe to take? I've tried to keep it to a minimum....even avoided it altogether for several days, but I really need something sometimes and Tylenol does zilch for me.
I'm back to doing housework (but avoiding mopping or vacuuming) too. Am I doing too much too soon? I'm 12 days postpartum.

Status: offline 		percocet is fine dear. I've taken percocet while bf'ding before. Take and don't worry. You need pain reflief!
Motrin is ok too.

Status: offline 		Amber, have you tried Motrin 800? That's what they gave me after I had Gabs, it's breastfeeding safe and so is the Percocet that they hand out like candy. I didn't take the Percocets though because they made my niece super cranky and fussy.

Tell me where the pain is, and what the pain feels like (if you can). Is it along the scar, or at the ends, for example? Or elsewhere? Is it a sharp pain or a dull ache? And when does it hurt? All the time or just occasionally?

I'd say if it pulls (and hurts), stop what you're doing immediately. If you can do what you need to without any discomfort, then it's fine.

You do need to make sure and have plenty of (feet up) rest each day though as well. If you are standing too much, it can "drag" on your wound.

Status: online 		Amber, at 12 days post C-section, I would say you should be doing only very light housework. Of course, I've never had a CS, but I have had abdominal surgery. You are post surgery and also post partum. Please rest.

Well, the scar itself is tender to the touch...just generally irritated feeling. Then there is just kind of a dull ache in my lower abdomen area which hurts most of the time but definitely more so when I am walking or moving around.
I'm trying to get plenty of rest each day, but there are just some things that have to be done.

Thanks for the reassurances on the Percocet! Ryanne, I tried Motrin in the hospital a few times, and it didn't do anything for the pain.

Maybe, but they don't have to be done by you. Your husband can help, and if he really can't, you can call a friend or someone from church and they will probably be more than happy to help you in such a practical way.

Later on, you will not regret a messy house for another week or two. You may regret doing too much too soon though.

Status: online 		I think CS recovery differs with each woman. I don't remember pain at 12 days, but I was pretty distracted by breastfeeding to notice anything.

Manda is right, follow your body's cues as to what you can do. Mobility helps healing, but only mobility that isn't painful. Even if you had a vaginal delivery, you wouldn't be up & doing all the housework yet.

I had a vaginal birth with both and both times I was given a 'profile' (military term, lol). I didn't do any of the laundry for the first 4 weeks post partum. Lifting the laundry baskets, etc. was too much and too heavy and if I tried I would bleed more. I think you should kindly ask your dh to do the laundry...folding it, is fine for you...but carrying anything more than your sweet baby is off limits.
