JONI EARECKSON TADA "I think God is especially honored when we offer a sacrifice of praise. He is glorified when we offer a sacrifice of praise. He is glorified when we offer words of adoration wrenched from a painehed and bruised heart...... Most of the verses written about praise in God's Word were penned by men and women who faced crushing heartaches, injustice, treachery, slander and scores of other intolerable situations." I did not actually realise this until I read these words of Joni. Q - What are your favourite scriptures in times of adversity, etc and how do they encourage you? --------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S. Whilst writing this thread, my toaster went on fire and the fire alarm did not go off as quickly as it should have! The kitchen I cleaned thoroughly yesterday will need to be thoroughly cleaned again to get rid of the smoke particles which have accumilated around it and all the worktops, etc! The stink of smoke in the house is horrible! I hate the smell of burnt toast!!!!!!!!!!!!! It stinks for days. Although this is nothing like on the scale of the situations which the Psalmist David or even more up-to-date people like Joni Eareckson Tada have faced, I can still praise God that the whole house did not catch fire and that we are alerted to a faulty fire alarm so we can have it repaired in the event of something worse

PSALM 9 in one such Psalm. It speaks to me of God avenging those who seek to do His people harm. I was reflecting on this Psalm this afternoon and it would seem that the Psalmist no longer seems to come out from one situation where he has been targeted by enemies than he goes into another! Sometimes this is so with us also. David sure had his fair share of enemies and those who sought to do him harm but none-the-less, he knew where to go to seek refuge and help and he praised God in advance for what he was confident God would do. Now this was not arrogance for David appealed to God's justice (he would not have done such if he knew that he was harbouring known sin because God would not hear his cry for help). He looked within first (i.e. he examined his heart before God first to see if there was any known sin which caused his problems with his enemies) before he sought God's justice and help and he then confidently trusted in God based on God's dealings with his enemies previously. Based on this, it would appear that if we examine our hearts before God first and find there is no known sin, then we can confidently trust that God will work all things together for good on our behalf and He will take care of those who seek to do us harm.

When things go wrong we should praise God. Not because they went wrong, but because He is still in control of the situation. By praising Him we are acknowledging His supreme control and He will turn the situation to good. I've seen it happen. Check out "From prison to praise" by Mervyn Carruthers.

I've seen this book advertised in my local bookstore. Praise is powerful.

We have two choices in adversity. One is to turn our eyes inward and be lost in a pity-party. The other is to turn our eyes heaven-ward and be lost in praise. But do to the later we must be grounded in the Word. We know that God will either change the circumstances. Or, He will walk with us, side-by-side through the circumstances

At times of adversity barriers are usually broken between people as they get closer together. They share their feelings, fears and worries and encourage each other. Could it be that God allows adversity to happen to give us an opportunity to get closer to Him? To share our fears and worries, and to seek His help? And to praise Him for being there, waiting to help us - if we only ask.
