The untimely passing of Dottie Rambo got me to thinking about how so many of my favorite groups of the past performed original songs written by a member of the group. For instance, the Happy Goodmans, Hemphills, Hinsons, and of course the Rambos. (Hmm, all mixed groups. I'm sure there must have been some male quartets that did this too, but none come to mind at the moment.)

Anyway, I'm wondering what current groups regularly perform songs written by a member of the group?

Also, what's your opinion: How important do you think it is for a group to perform original songs?

Greater Vision is first that comes to mind.

I think it definitely helps. I'll have to think. The Roy Knight Singers do and Legacy Five did when Roger was alive. I'm sure I'll think of others.

In my opinion it is VERY important for groups to make sure at least the majority of the songs performed are originals. Let me qualify that by saying it's more important if you are a "professional" group than it is if you are a weekend group. It's just a fact people are not going to drive miles and miles to hear you sing, or spend money on tickets much less recordings if they are just covers of someone else's songs.

I didn't specify the artist has to write their own songs, not everyone is a writer, but there are plenty of great writers that would love to have someone performing their songs and love it even more if they recorded them. I think a lot of artists perform the amount of covers they do because it's easier than doing your own material. If you are doing covers, the arrangement is already in place, key changes etc etc (unless you choose to change it, most won't/don't).

good points GospelProducer.

one thing to look at though, small groups need music to sell and easiest way is to do an album of covers. and since will be opening likely or doing local Churches, won't be a need for a full set or double set of original material unless they want it.

A large proportion of the Diplomats' songs are written by Jimmy Pearson, the group's lead singer and owner. He is a gifted writer and, knowing his group, can tailor his songs to fit the talents of the singers very well.

Oh I agree, that's why I qualified my answer. I had a group contact me last week from Ohio wanting to talk about me producing a CD for national release. I was amazed to learn they don't even have a "table CD" yet and are wanting to do a national release.

You are doing things right it would appear TQ, start small, and slow...watch not only where you jump but also where you will land. BTW I advised the group from OH to record a "table CD" with a mix of covers and original material, sell enough of it so they could afford to record a 2nd table CD...then, and only then, consider something national, maybe just a single. Everyone want's to be the Inspirations or the Kingsmen overnight it seems.

Get their Live in WV one. I have it and it's really good.

*(But then, I am biased towards liking live music!)

They're not filtered out too much on this one.

Triumphant sings quite a few of Scotty Inman's songs, and Joseph Habedank writes for the Perry's.
I like when a group uses songs written by a member.

Second time posting this messeage...

Liberty sings a lot of songs written by their pianist/baritone, Doran Ritchey, and their tenor, Keith Waggoner. Both are very talented writers.

Phil Cross and Poet Voices sing almost all Phil Cross songs.

The Booth Brothers sing Jim Brady songs.

Ok, this is my list for now.

I agree. They are both very talented. (I think Doran spends more time doing it.) Royce Mitchell (their bass singer) also does a bit.

I didn't know that about the Hayes Family but that's neat.

I almost forgot the McGruders. Almost all the songs they record are written by Carroll.

Kirk Talley wrote many of the songs he recorded. Their is a regional group in our area called River City Qt. that use many of the songs written by their owner/baritone singer.
Many of the Perry Sisters songs were written by their lead singer, Diana Perry Gillette.
Mark Bishop writes his own songs, and wrote many of the ones the Bishops recorded.

While JD Sumner was with the Blackwood Brothers, he wrote several of their songs. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, on one of their tours in the late 50's or early 60's, JD wrote just about a whole album's worth as they were to wind up at the recording studio. Anyone else remember the particulars of that occurence?
