What did Jesus mean when he said this in Luke 13: Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

Jesus is the door. He is simply stating that He is the only way to the Father in Heaven. Many people will try, have tried, to enter Heaven based on their own efforts or by believing in false religions and leaders. But, Jesus is the "way, the truth, and the life" as He says in John 14:6.

The main thing to realize is that the reason Jesus is the only way to the Father is because He is the only person who had a life to give that would satisfy God as payment for our sins. When Adam sinned in the Garden, God removed His life from Adam, and he died spiritually. Before God could restore His life to mankind He had to take away the sin that caused His life to be removed. Jesus, being God in the flesh, is the only man born spiritually alive. Therefore, He was the only man who had a life to give, for all mankind, that would satisfy God as payment for our sins. Now, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, God can offer His life, as a free gift, to all who believe. And because of the Jesus' death on the cross there is now no sin that can cause that life to leave. That is why it is called an eternal life. A life that will carry you through this life and on into eternity, even after you physically die.

Hope that helps...

Grace and Peace

Interestingly their are still many who believe they can find God. As if they can catch Him by surprise. They use their logic and all the wisdom of men and are confident they know how to storm the kingdom of God and yet as they attempt to break in they fail to find anything for as Christ has said no man can come to Him unless Our Father in Heaven brings them. Many of Jesus' disciples turn away after hearing this for they knew they had come looking for something other than what was on offer.

That is what is on offer is not what a lot of men are looking for. Hence, Matthew 19:23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

The way is narrow by comparison in that it specifically excludes some from pasing through. Mt 7:13 - "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

Strive--try, make effort, give willful intent, intend to, commit to... trust Jesus as Lord.

Don't think of strive as an exhaustive, self-centered effort of works. That isn't what it is. It is, simply, trusting Jesus as your Lord. If you do this, you have made it through the narrow door just fine.

Do not forget that Jesus also said that His yoke was easy, and His burden light.

What He means (IMO) is that there will be few Faithful who make it into God's promised kingdom. It is a difficult road to travel; many more will try and be unsuccessful than those that succeed. It is by grace that through faith we are saved. Faith however is not simply belief; it is a way of life. Some will say you only need to believe Jesus is your Lord and Savior. I don't believe that is a complete portrait of faith. YMMV.

There is a huge one stop thread on eternal salvation in the Theology forums that discusses the different views the topic that relates to this scripture. Feel free to peruse it and add your input.

John 5:39-40 tells us, "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life."

And Jesus continues and tells us a bit more about their 'unwillingness'. "How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?" (v 44)

Pride puffs up. . . kind of like the Pillsbury Doughboy. . . and proud men who are seeking and satisfied with the glory this life brings are TOO BIG to get through the door, the narrow door, that Jesus is speaking of.

The humble, only those who are truthful about themselves such as the woman who anointed Jesus with the oil, are the 'small ones' who fit through the door and enter into Jesus.

That's my simple little explanation of what Jesus is saying. Bless ya, LL
