Hey there. Im going to NYC for college. I'm looking to stay off campus, relatively close to public transportation and such. Is anyone familiar with NYC? Im not sure about my options or where to start looking, really.

what neighborhood is your school in? do you want to live close to that campus? or would you prefer cheaper places uptown? what's your price range?

Im going to CUNY. I haven't chosen a campus yet. I want to get a better idea about the area first and pick a campus that is nearby. Here's a map of their locations: http://www1.cuny.edu/about/colleges.html I'm pretty flexible about roommates and kind of accommodation, but something in the range of 300/month would be great. Is that realistic? Thanks a bunch for being willing to help me.

Is that realistic? not unless you have 3 or 4 roomates. the cheapest housing you are going to find would be uptown in the following neighborhoods: Washington Heights, Hamilton Heights, Inwood, and parts of Harlem. you can usually find one bedrooms for under $1,200 a month, 2 bedrooms for around 1,600 a month.. if you are sharing with multiple roomates, you could get it down to around $300.00. there are also people who rent out bedrooms in their homes to students, but even those are around 400-700 a month...for just a room. you might try looking on craigslist.org for sublets and roomates. now would be a good time to start as students are moving out of the city for summer, so things are opening up

You can probably find a bedroom for $700/month. I really don't think $300/month is doable. Does CUNY have dorms? A few of my coworkers who went to CUNY lived in Newport/Jersey City, NJ, but it's starting to get expensive- people are moving there to avoid the city income tax. I think your best bet might be Brooklyn.

Thank a bunch for the info. Im talking to my mum and dad about the situation, to see what we can make of it. There's a bunch of decent places going on craigslist, most of them under 500/mo. But yeah, I am looking at Brooklyn right now. If things don't work out closer to the city, I might have to go ahead and look further upstate. It's all a waiting game now. Nobody wants to give me any firm answers
