I am really wanting to "engage" my class in something new - not just a lesson with "application" points and then dismiss.

I want to do something new...(don't we all) and I want to know what ideas you all may have.

Perhaps, this can be a thread for new ideas where teachers can share?

Well here goes nothing...

I lead a "young adult" ministry: 18-late 20's

I want to get my students to "think biblically" so here are my thoughts.

Have them bring in a magazine article and analyze it from a Christian Perspective
Provide lyrics for the nation's top radio singles/songs and have them analyze the words
Copy questions from yahoo answers and have them analyze the responses and/or answer the question.

Do you have any other ideas how to "Activate" and "Engage" and "Make real" the lessons we teach?

If you do Post them!

My SS class uses a publication from Lifeway called Masterwork. This is awesome! It addresses current issues - very applicable. It's a quarterly publication, like I think most are. We'll be wrapping up this quarter's publication soon, but right now we're studying about prayer. Before that we did an in-depth study on David. I like this format much better than the typical SS books I've seen over the years.

Go to breakpoint.org. Chuck Colson has a lot of stuff on worldview. They also have a blog called"The Point."

Those are great ideas, You have to keep that group fresh. I was thinking this is funny, but our group that age painted the room where they met, and talked about things. Crazy I know but they opened up according to teacher.

Two jobs taught me how to actually conduct conversations with men:

  • Materials technician / construction site inspector. The guy who wanders around a job site with a white hard hat, clipboard, and clean hands.
  • Technical writer. The guy who translates the garbled utterances of experts into plain English.

What do these jobs have in common? In both cases, you are talking with people about their work.

In traditional Catholic theology, you have two-tier Christianity. Some special elite folks have a call to full-time (celibate) ministry. The others, the also-ran, have lower callings.

In the fundamentalist subculture, the "truly dedicated" Christians serve God in "full-time Christian service" as preachers, singers, or jocks. A number of passionate believers find themselves "living by charity" at a subsistence level, in pursuit of the goal of walking close to God by doing "full time Christian service."

Reformed (Calvinist) theology teaches that every vocation is sacred, and of equal worth in God's sight. Vincent Van Gogh would have been a happier camper (with two ears) if someone had told him that a good painter pleased God more than a lousy preacher!

If, as Jesus said, God's Kingdom works like yeast to transform everything, then every vocation moves the purposes of His Kingdom forward. Every calling matters. Every job is important. And God has wisdom to provide people in every vocation, to help them achieve success. (see John 15 -- fruit bearing is not optional.)

Find out what your people want to do with their lives, and show them how to find God's directions in His Word for their specific callings.

For example: What does the Bible have to teach technical writers who document computer systems? Actually, quite a bit. If I can find in Leviticus a model for topic-based structured writing, I'm sure each of the people in your class can find keys to their callings in God's Word.

Instead of seing the Bible as text we must master, we need to see it as text that must master us. One thing that is lacking in a number of Christians is a biblo-centered worldview. Colson does a great job of doing this in his book "How Now Shall We Live." Using the Bible as a filter to interpret current events is a great idea.

I am currently teaching Systematic Theology and will be finishing within the next month.

I plan on teaching a 2 month lesson through the Summer called Engage.
This lesson is based on Romans 12:1-2 and Colossians 3:1-2.

I apologize I did not leave a disclaimer, but I thought "since this is a ministry forum most would assume that I know how to teach". Therefore, to do justice and satisfy any"disclaimer".

I exegete a passage then I bring it "up to date" and then provide application points.

For instance:

Romans 12:1-2 and Colossians 3:1-2 Tell us that we are think heavenly and renew our minds.
But to what?
Well that is easy, to prove the will of God.
How does this prove the will of God?
It does because if we have a renewed minds focused on Jesus in heaven - then we will have new attitudes/actions in our lives. Then we can prove the will of God.
So what is the will of God?
That which is good, acceptable, and perfect.

So based on that brief explanation - I plan to say know that we intellectually know what we are supposed to do - let us do it by engaging the world.

How do I plan to do that?

By..having them bring in a magazine article and analyze it from a Christian Perspective
Provide lyrics for the nation's top radio singles/songs and have them analyze the words
Copy questions from yahoo answers and have them analyze the responses and/or answer the question.

One example would look like this:
We read the lyrics to a Popular Song today like Taylor Sift "Picture to Burn".
And we analyze (put into practice what we just learned - "thinking biblically") the lyrics to this song and we will discover the song is about getting revenge.

Then we ask key questions - why is revenge wrong?
From there we go to other portions of the bible and explain that Vengeance is the Lords and it is His to repay not ours.
So then we tackled the natural reaction to that answer - "Well, what about justice". And we study the bible to see, what does the bible say about Justice?

So the next time they are driving in their car listening to Country and hear this song by Taylor Swift they will (hopefully) have a better understanding and think about "Does listening and singing along to this song glorify God?"

Perhaps then they will think - "Do I listen and sing songs about God outside of Church?"

So, this was why I am asking - does anyone have any other ideas that may be useful?

Print and have them read some of the posts here on these forums. Things that directly relate to their group. Then have them write responses to them. If they don't have access to computer, maybe, you could post their responses for them.

Talk about thinking biblically, this place has sure helped me. This place is a God send to me.

You might also have them mentor youth. They are at the right age. Ask them to each invite a youth they know to study with them. Head up projects with their youths. Get them to interact with them.

The youth that I deal with are very at risk. I bring them to church and we all do something fun after. Usually bowling, we have rent a lane on sunday here. You might try something else. Pizza or a day at the park.

It may be too much, but it is an idea. It will get your group involved in ministry at the church and give some at risk youth in the community a chance to hear from the Lord.

To think biblically, you must at least introduce them to Hebraic logic. You must also introduce them to an ancient Hebraic world view. These are the "cultural understanding" of the writers and readers of most biblical texts. The world view and logical framework are very different than what we have in western culture today.

The Collapse of the Brass Heavens by Doug McMurray is a good start on the worldview side.

I hope I'm not out of line here, but I would like to propose a Bible study that I have written.

After over 15 years in preaching ministry and serving God all my life in the local church, I have observed a lacking in many Christians about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. They believe in Him, but they aren't living after His example.

Since our salvation is because of Jesus and the church is all about Jesus, wouldn't it make sense to want to learn about His life and teachings? Jesus is not only our Lord and Savior. He is also our role model.

God bless you as you search to become more like Him.

Someone else mentioned this and I have to admit that I have used the "topics" and "arguments" on this forum and another one in my class. (young adults)

It's always a blast. Know the scripture you need to refer them to and have your bible marked.

Some of my young adults have been exposed to some rather legalistic views. So we took those views and did a study from scripture......you must be "holy on Sunday" - no watching TV, no going out to eat, must be at chruch etc.

Another time I took the Larry King live transcript from his interview with Joel Osteen and we acted it out. Then we went to scripture to see what "scripture" had to say on the topics to see if Joel was Biblical or not.

I also copied the transcriptus of Larry King's interview with John McArthur and people from other religious backgrounds. We roll played that one and did the scripture search as well.

Thanks for giving me some fresh ideas. I like it!!!

Hello NYCorBUST

How about having them study the Word?

This person said exactly what i was thinking. I doubt if your group has covered a fraction of the bible in study? Why on earth would you go looking for new ideas, or to bring in other material?
Just get out your bibles read a little and study it. In 50 0r 60 years you would be very lucky to cover most of Holy Scripture, especially with new people joining, and people leaving.

If the Word of God is not enough for you, or exciting enough to teach in itself - you are in the wrong job! I teach my 3 eldest sons 12, 13 & 15 in a few days, EVERY day of the year. I have no training, no qualifications either, leaving school before my exams.

I study alone, using upto 4 bible translations and multiple commentaries. If you honestly can't interest young people in the Word of God, with the help of the Holy Spirit - why are you the group leader. Resign and let someone else lead and learn for awhile. BibleBased.
