Hunter is only 21 months and is still doing just fine in his crib. I do realize though that once he turns 2 it is going to be time to transition him to a toddler bed or big boy bed. I was just wondering from personal experience is better to go to a toddler bed first and then move to a twin size big boy/girl bed? Or does it not make much difference. The brand Step2 has THIS bed that I love especially because of the storage space provided underneath the bed. It uses a twin mattress and can support up to 250 lbs. so it should be a bed that he can grow with for quite a while. It will also match his room really well which is another plus for me...I like things to match. It is expensive, but we are thinking of asking both sets of grandparents if the would like to go in on it with us for his birthday. If we do not choose this bed we will just go with a regular pecan colored toddler bed that matches his furniture. His bed does convert to a toddler bed too we did not order the extra stuff you need to be able to do that, but that is an option as well. Though when we have another child we hope to use the same crib and furniture for the next kiddo. Decisions, decisions....

We always went right to a twin size. They might sleep with a mattress on the floor for a few months before going to the bedframe. We figured why buy a bed that is not a necessity that they will only stay in for a few years. Plus, if they use a toddler bed and then a new baby comes you need to get another crib mattress or quickly get a twin

We went right to a twin bed with a rail on it to keep him from rolling out.

What extra stuff does it need? With the cot-bed that we had for our two, all you had to do was remove the sides.
We moved our ds from that to a big bed when he was 3.

I think we are just going to move straight to a twin size bed, unless we're still in an apartment(which we shouldn't be) and don't have the room then we'll do a toddler bed. That bed is nice, but it is expensive since he'll eventually need a third bed. We'll probably buy something like THIS, so that it will last her through highschool.

But how eventually? It's 85 inches long and 44 inches wide, that's pretty substantial. Isn't that longer and wider than a normal twin? (you'd have to deduct some from the frame, but I can't see that would make a major difference.

I think the reason she is saying they'd want a 3rd bed eventually is that is is pretty juvinile.

Well it would probably be fine IMO up till Hunter was 9 or 10. And maybe by then his younger brother or sister would have moved into it anyway. I think it's really cool!

That was exactly what I was thinking, Manda. I also figured even if he used until he was 6 or 7 (which yes the bed is juvenile, but I think not to juvenile for a 7 year old) we would have gotten our money worth out of it. But, my ideal plan would be for it to be passed down to the next kiddo to use as well. Whatever furniture/bed we bought Hunter after that would be his furniture until he left our home.

We've always done the toddler bed thing because they have been given to us and they take up less room. Not to mention - the sheets are easier to wash.

That was my only concern with the bed is the height and him being able to safely get up and down the bed. I like that the sides are high on it though and the extra storage is a big plus. We were going to buy a toy box to put in his room, but it was going to have to go in his closet because we do not have anymore space in there. This way we would not have to buy a toy box and he can have easy access to the toys during the day.
Definitely let me know what you and your hubby decide on though because any help I can get making this decision will be great. Hubby is pretty laid back on this and ultimately let it be my decision.

Oh, we definitely are looking at beds that have storage underneath, just not quite so high as that one.

I think my son was about 2 yrs old when we got rid of the crib (to give to another baby, since he was not a baby anymore but a "big boy"). He went right into a twin size bed. However I did put some larger stuffed animals to make a border for awhile :)
We made a grand production of how lucky he was to be a big boy and have a big boy bed now - not a baby crib :)

Noah went from basinet, to our bed, and now he is almost 20 months old and we are starting to put him in a twin bed, a bunk bed, his is the bottom bunk. We also have the mesh sides that one can buy so that he won't roll off.

Chelle, you could look at the regular twin size beds with drawers underneath. Target.com had some in their kids furniture section...

I think going straight to a twin is wise. We got Timmy a toddler car bed, and he sinks down in it because he's 40 pounds. He ought to have something with a box spring to support his weight.
That bed you linked to is sooooo cool, Chelle! If you decided to get him a more regular twin bed, he may not be tall enough to get in it himself, but you can put a little footstool. If Hunter isn't really gutsy, and if the bed is kind of high up like the one you linked to, you may not have problems with him getting out of bed when it's time for a nap, LOL! One year and 4 months later, we are still having issues with Timmy getting out of bed when he is supposed to be napping.

I wouldn't personally have said that just under 4ft was "so high". The sides are quite substantial, and a 2 yr old (especially an adventurous boy!) would be well capable of being taught how to come down those steps slowly and carefully. He may even know how to do this (about coming down backwards) and if he doesn't he will soon learn and will probably revel in it.

Manda, I have no doubt Hunter or Nathan could climb up and down that bed Chelle linked to, if they were in a playground in broad daylight. But when they are sleepy? Beds should be for stumbling in and out of. I had a bunk bed several times in my life and always hated it.
Neither boy is anywhere close to 4 feet tall, and I wouldn't want a bed taller then then his height.

All of our children went straight from the crib to a twin bed. Well there was the 9 months that the three eldest slept on mattresses on the floor while we were in transition before moving into our current home. We were in the rental prior to this home for a mere 9 months before we closed on this house - we saw NO reason to set up a set of bunkbeds and another twin bed just to take them back down again. Anyway!

ANY of my children starting at 2 or 3 would very easily could have managed that bed, day or night, half awake or not and they would have LOVED it! How long do you expect he would be in this bed? Also if you do go with the regular twin bed don't forget the bins that roll under the bed for toys. We use them in all three kid bedrooms in this house. They stash everything from dolls and puzzles to matchbox cars and board games.
Now for us buying a toddler bed between the crib and a twin bed would have been impractical for us. Just one unneeded step for us.

if your son is able to understand about getting a big boy bed, then i would watch him and as he sleeps if he stays in the center of his crib or if he tries to cliimb out? then i would consider to get a big boy bed, you can get short side rails i know that they do sell them, my oldest son who is now 22 when we took him out of his crib when he went to sleep i would put his stuffed animals all around him so he was protected from "not" rolling off the bed.
i think you should watch and then try.
