I was trying to read God's Word at 6am this morning and was thinking of getting up to study His word because it was the best time for me to do so. However, I didn't get much sleep the night before, so my mind was like mud and I couldn't understand what I was reading, so I gave up and went back to sleep, even though I knew that spending time with God is more important than sleep.

Have you ever tried to read or study God's Word when you're so tired that your brain feels like mud and you can't comprehend what you're reading? If so, did you continue reading/studying or go back to bed?

EDITED to add text.

If you're too tired to pray or read the Bible just tell God so and go to sleep. There's no point reading something that is just not sinking in because you can't concentrate.

God will understand - as Jesus did in the Garden before He was arrested.

If I'm 'too busy' for study even to read(aloud), routinely, I'm too busy to miss God's best in my life experience.

I will remind you of Proverbs 6:22. It is telling us to observe God's commandments and. . .

when you walk about, they will guide you
when you sleep they will watch over you
and when you awake, they will talk to you

God's word is never wasted. Even as we sleep, He can be instructing us. In fact, Psalm 16:7 says, "I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; indeed my mind instructs me in the night."

Yeah! You're not sleeping. You're being instructed. Bless you!

Be well rested and hydrated and your stress level will drop.

God designed the body you have....He understands.

I don't have a problem with this unless you were partying the night before.

I believe that it is important to not squeeze God into our schedules but rather make Him a continuous part of our schedules.

I've tried reading the Bible in the morning at breakfast, but I to am half asleep and so is my wife. Both of us cannot comprehend anything in the morning at breakfast.

At night if I start reading before I go to bed and I end up falling asleep reading it. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Whether the hesitance comes from Satan, guilt, lack of purpose or habit we all have(had)to start somewhere; consistently(discipline), a goal(a week) and reinforcement(reading aloud).

Try this Smokey:
1. Paul's letter to Ephesians has six chapters. (You can read the whole book in about 15 minutes so a chapter a day is less that five minutes.)[Actually this scheme will work with all Paul's 'prison' epistles but Galatians and Ephesians have six chapters.]
2. Set a time(morn, eve, noon, whenever), consistently, the same place but only commit yourself for that week. Start reading Ephesians, a chapter a day, aloud with obedience in the back of your mind. Reading aloud doesn't allow my mind to wander plus Satan can hear you, he can't hear us when we read/pray silently. Praying aloud helps with attention, too.
3. Rest a day(Sunday?) and commit yourself for another week(Committing to a week is much less daunting then a lifetime). Start Ephesians, aloud again, with the emphasis of unity the next week.
4. On the third week, rest a day, commit(Ephesians again aloud)and trying memorizing some key verses. There's no secret to memorization, it's practice and review and since you've read Ephesians aloud two time in two weeks you're ready.

We all have to be proactive in one's disciplines and service but trying 'not to...?' rarely is the path to personal growth.

This also, happens, when I study too long.. I try to continue, but it's no use when the eye lids keep closing and my head nods.

God knows the intentions of our heart. He is also the author of our physical body, and the giver of needed sleep. So, rest...and continue your study at another time in the day, that he's blessed you with.

Yes this happens all the time. It does absolutely no good to read if you are not comprehending so that you can apply what you read. I can never study in the morning, even though it would be nice to have God's word working in my heart through out the day. But I find that if I read at night, I comprehend it better, and can think about what I read the night before so I can apply it to situations that I'm facing. Everybody is different, so find time when you can comprehend it so that you will be able to apply what you learn, or mull over (meditate on it) later

I remember for a while it was almost like an unwritten commandment that if you were a Christian, you were supposed to have a quiet time in the morning before you began your day. That was the "best" time and we all heard the testimonies of folks who just couldn't start their day without that time.

I tried and tried. I'm just soooo not a morning person. I couldn't do it. I can workout in the morning because my brain doesn't need to be that engaged - but I can't focus and read and pray first thing. I finally realized that what worked for some folks, just wasn't going to work for me. I'll say a quick prayer as I head off to work, but beyond that - ugh... I started doing my time at night before bed. It was like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders because I was finally free to work WITH my body instead of AGAINST my body in my quiet times with God.

I think we all need to find how we are wired and work with that. If that means spending time with God at 5am - go for it. If that means midnight - go for it. If that means at lunch - go for it. Just spend time with Him! Everyone should be able to carve out a few minutes sometime during their day - if not, it's time to re-look at your priorities.

Even if you only read 2 verses it's still planted in your heart and you just might be surprised when and how the Holy Spirit chooses to bring it back to memory.

Falling asleep reading the Word is actually a wonderful thing to do.

If you're too sleepy, try skimming. Try to keep a number of things you want to do in the Word so that you can do them according to your energy-level. Skim when you're tired... just look at familiar verses or one verse that caught your attention the day before. For times you feel reflective, do devotionals. When you need to study, have a plan for that. This is what helps me... sometimes I will come up with a plan to do nothing but study the bible for a month, then get sidetracked because I'm too tired. Like others said, falling asleep in the Word is a beautiful way to fall asleep.
