And no, we're not talking in the romantic sense here..........
As singles, we are told to go out and do things and keep ourselves occupied as we wait upon our mates to be brought into our lives. I know that many of us have many different things we enjoy doing.
So, tell me - what makes you passionate? What things give you the most joy? What excites you when you get to do it?
For those with kids - I'm not talking about anything with them - this is about YOU!!!!!!!!!

Reading, anthing to do with books. Mostly fiction. My favorite pastime is reading. I'd rather do that than almost any other activity.

Doing the study, like we did on Haggai, going to the word each day, reading something over and over asking God to begin to take me past what is said on the surface, those things the commentaries or preachers have already planted in my mind........to things unknown to me......new things he wants to reveal to me.....and then walking those things out in my life.
What excites me........living life full of passion and excitement.
A life of adventure does not have to include going off to a foreign land or living a life far from the typical, everyday, family life.
I want to get married, raise a family, go shopping at the grocery store, cheer on my son or daughter playing sports, and everything else the is entailed in the old fashion family dream.........
But in doing those things I will live with passion, love, excitement and joy.....
I guess you could say I am passionate about making everyday life full of passion, excitement and joy.........and I believe that type of life is possible.........
I believe as a stay at home mom I can walk under open heavens.........doing things we like to think of only typical "missionaries" doing.......I can pray for the clerk in the grocery store........see a child hurt at the ball park and pray for healing.........I can let the light of Christ shine at the zoo.
I think passion and joy are not dependent on what we are doing but who is enabling us to do it and how we allow him to use the gifts he has given us.

After posting I began to wonder is my definition of passion different then others.......so I looked it up.
I think this definition is closest to how passion is defined in my life......
a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for
I love that word......extravagant fondness, enthusiasm or desire for...........a extravagant.
Just a powerful reminder why our passions need to line up with Godly desires.
There are many things I love to do, they are so much fun, but I don't have an extravagant fondness, enthusiasm or desire for them..........Extravagant to me means way over the top..........
I want to be more passionate........don't you?

My one true passion is running. It's my escape. As long as I can run, I feel that I can do anything. When I was off running for about 8 months due to injury, it literally send me into a mild depression.
Having said that, I have so many passions but to sum them all up, it would be anything to do with the outdoors. I'm in my element when I'm hiking, cycling, skiing, camping. I've discovered climbing and I realize that I only truly live in the now when I'm climbing. That's when all the worries of the world disappears for me. I love it and am truly passionate about it. Travelling is another passion. But only if I get to do the hike/bike/ski/run/climb activities that I enjoy.
I'm also very passionate about reading. I'm never without a book.

Passionate: capable of, affected by, or expressing intense feeling; enthusiastic; easily aroused to anger.
I have a passionate personality by nature and intensity is part of who I am. When I decide to pour myself into something, I give it 110%. Right now, that's school. I have a passion for helping people, but I have to know how to best help them... no half-hearted tries are acceptable. So I learn. I added the definition "easily aroused to anger" because if something stands in my way of my passions, anger is something that quickly comes to the surface. Of course, I keep it tempered.

Guess I should answer my own thread, huh? I have a servant's heart - that is what drives me.
My passion is for God and doing His work. However, I do believe that His work and my dreams are intertwined. I am passionate about disasters. I am passionate about soccer (yeah, I know that's odd - but it's not about going to games). Soccer is in my blood - literally - from my grandfather. I am passionate about seeing it succeed in the US and being involved from the inner workings of the sport. I am also passionate about education - my own and helping others learn.
How does this all come together? I am passionate about teaching people to be safe in disasters. And when that safety is for major sporting events, then it all comes together. But the disaster safety takes on so many forms - and that's where it ties more into soccer.
Yes, I have odd interests. I've met others who are passionate about disasters - but these are folks who want to be out on the front lines immediately after one. Not me! I am a planner. I like to be involved with the management of them - but don't ask me to lead one! LOL
God has gifted me with a very unique mind - of that, I have no doubt. Now it's just allowing Him to bring things into my life that allow me to do all of these at the same time.
My God is big enough to do so.
(And, did you notice I didn't even mention Brain Bowl? That's because it's all part of the educational side of me - it's all intertwined.)

Ever since I can remember, I have this great big passion for AFrica. I have dreams of going there and working with World Vision. WHen people ask me what I want to do when I grow up, my response is go to Africa. And as I mature, I think God is changing me so that I can handle the work involved when I do go. My personality and passion seems to be coming together. I plan on retiring in 15 years, and I know where I'm going to be. But until then, I think there's a lot of work to be done in me to get me ready to do what I'm meant to do.

Amen to that!!!!!!! I've got the same feelings toward the Balkans - and know that when I am teaching and have off summers, I will be able to go there during that time. So, while I won't be there full time - I'll be there - using soccer as a witnessing tool to the people for which God gave me such an amazing passion - I cry even thinking about it!

I felt the same way when I read your post. It took me awhile to realize that the interests in the outdoors plus the interests in doing social work are not contradictory. I'm also noticing that when God put those passions as part of your make up, your heart gets stirred and you're tuned in to His calling. I didn't know it then. But through out the years, every time I see a World Vision commercial, I'm tuned in. Now, I have a couple of kids that I'm supporting through WV and plan on visiting them. And my heart seems to grow bigger, literally, when I see them. Only God can do that. I've always been selfish and self centeredness, and I still am to a degree, but a lot of those are falling away as I mature.
Also, I have this dream of climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, and somehow, the last two years, situations just happened that allowed me to do a lot of hiking through the mountains and I absolutely enjoy it. I feel so alive when I'm out there. It's like I'm being trained to start getting out of my comfort zone and being developed into a completely different person from 20 years ago.

What a great thread. I was just listening to a Marcus Buckingham workshop yesterday (he wrote "Now, Discover Your Strengths") and considering what he had to say concerning strengths and weaknesses. Our strengths makes us feel stronger and alive, where our weaknesses make us feel depleted. You can be great at something (like organizing), but if it makes you feel depleted after you do it, then it is a weakness. So I was considering that while thinking about something that Richard Bolles wrote years ago - "Your Mission in Life" (which is at the very back of "What Color is Your Parachute" - which is a classic in vocational literature) - which talked about God writing his plan for us in our "members" - in our bodies. I can't remember right now what verse he was quoting - but it was good. At the same time, I was listening to a local preacher talk about the fact that sometimes God has us undertake tasks that we aren't good at (think of Moses speaking to Pharoah), but in that - we lean on Him.
There are things that we naturally like to do, are passionate about, and that we are good at - we get pleasure from them - and this is part of our purpose. As I read the posts here, I was amazed at how many different passions are here. From planning for disasters (I would have never thought of that), to hiking, to being interested in people from Africa or Eastern Europe, to Southern Gospel, leading worship, kids and animals, making food, arts and crafts, making a point (debating), giving your best (110%) - it is all amazing stuff.
I think that for me, for a long time, I belittled my passions and tried to do what everyone else was doing - or I tried to be practical. I wanted to do things that would help people and I couldn't see how what I wanted to do could do that. But, I love music - specifically - creating music. And I love film - editing it - adding sound - all of the post production work. I enjoy writing and editing scripts. In fact, I really like editing what has been written. The initial draft is fun to write - but going back and shaping it - that is the best part. I love that. And I love listening to people - interviewing them or just talking to them - putting them at ease - making them feel understood and loved. And I like helping other people to discover their passions.

I have to say reading, too, like Pauley.....although I don't so much enjoy fiction. I love any books/workbooks by Beth Moore, Charles Stanley, Chip Ingram.....and others, but those are my favorites these days. I also enjoy watching documentaries about peoples' lives, especially ethnic struggles.
Hey, you know what? I just though of something. I actually DO enjoy fiction. I love to go to the library and get children's books to read to my little girl.....but secretly, I love getting them for me, too. (I'm so naughty sometimes. hee hee)
But, true to the loving-to-learn side of me, I especially love the non-fiction ones with characters from other ethnic groups that give insights into their lives, especially historic ones like slavery, prejudism or other struggles that some minority people groups go through and are going through still.
I read one the other day to Emma (my little girl) about an African American widowed mother and her small son. It took place in the Civil War days and is written in the little boy's point of view, the struggles of living in the South as an African American during that time (made tougher by being an orphaned boy with his widowed mother).
Very insightful and tender.
I love books, grown up and children's books, that give me glimpses of what life is/was like for other people. I have a soft place for the struggles of the American Indians, the African Americans and any other people group that have gone through or are continuing to go through social struggles.
I also enjoy watching documentaries along the same lines. The SC Education Station has awesome documentaries.
I have also gone online to a site (address below this paragraph) where you can actually listen to interviews conducted by reporters with former slaves who are/were still living. I think the interviews were conducted in the 1930's. Awesome stuff, although the recordings are crackly and sometimes unintelligible. I had to keep referring to the transcripts to get all they were saying. I spent a lot of time on that site. Talk about getting a true picture into the past. Man!

I also frequent sites and pour over literature from Voice of the Martyr. And I've been listening to a radio show called "Compassion Radio", which is along the same lines of Voice of the Martyr -- persecution of Christians in China and other lands. They conduct secret interviews with some of the abused and persecuted Christians and missionaries and give accounts of the abuse that goes on in other countries.
Okay, I'm done (for now).
