I have a laptop running Windows 98. I use it for Bible study with a program called E-sword, it works fine for that. But in order to print my notes I have to get online and E-mail the file to my desk top computer. I can’t find a printer drive for 98, they have removed all of them…

When I get online I keep getting script errors, about six for every page that loads, is there anyway to get the software to ignore these script errors with out my having to click continue every time?

Also, if I should purchase a CD to upgrade to EX, how much slower would the laptop get?
Is the disk upgrade something I could do myself?
Would I loose the office program that is loaded now?
I do not have the windows disks that came with the laptop.

Have you done any Windows Updates for this laptop? Is it fully patched and updated? What browser are you using and is that the latest you can get for Windows 98?

Also, is your Windows 98 SE or ? The script errors tell me it could be your browser.

Definitely want to second the browser part. The latest version of internet explorer you can get is 6, but Firefox 2.0 can run on Win 98--it will be recieving security patches/updates for another year or so. If you are going to use IE, defintely make sure IE6 is on your computer, but I don't know of one security expert who would recommend IE6 over Firefox, so use Firefox.

By "EX" I assume you meant "XP." Its hard to say how much slower the laptop would get. Depends on your hardware. Yes, if you purchased an upgrade CD (from 98 to XP), you would lose all the programs and files on your laptop (unless you copied them onto a CD-DVD, of course). Also, there was a definite hardware requirement boost for XP--just as there was for Vista, so look at your hardware and see how fast your CPU is and how much RAM you have.

Losing any software program isn't such a big thing if you are willing to tinker--you can use a program to get the key/registration for the program (such as Office), get the original installation file on a peer-to-peer network such as BitTorrent, and then install it again.

BTW--have you looked in DriverGuide? They will occasionally have drivers that the OEM doesn't list.

A laptop that came with native W98 will not be able to run XP or it would at an absolute crawl.

Thanks for the replys so far. When microsoft did away with 98 support, everyone pulled their drivers of the web, at last that is what LexMark told me in an E-mail I sent them?

Will IE 6 run on 98?

I can't find a wesite that sill has patches, it is the second edition of 98. Other than the script error problem, it runs rather well.
I would just like to get a few more miles out of it...

Yes IE6 can run on Win 98--it very well could be that the errors you are getting are simply the result of using a browser (IE 4 or 5) that has not been coded for for the last several years. Having said that, IE6 is not nearly as secure as Mozilla, so I would move over to that browser, and then only use IE6 when you have to. Besides, with Mozilla, you will get tabbed browsing and a password manager as well.

One more thing--I just realized that Firefox 2.0 will be the last version that can run on Windows 98, adn it will only be updated (security-wise) for some 6 months after the release of 3.0 (which is coming in a month or so). So if you definitely want to wring more mileage out of your laptop (not a bad idea--computers as you know can last quite a bit longer than most of us get rid of them, and you can't get a cheaper price than free), I'd recommend instead of Firefox 2.0, that you try a sister-project browser--Seamonkey. It can handle Windows 95 (believe it or not), and is being maintained with security fixes.

There was a compilation of all the 98SE updates. This may be it:

Google for Lexmark Windows 98 drivers and you will likely find your printer driver or one which is compatible.

I found a site that allowed me to download and install IE6 sp1

It looks like it worked! I was not even able to view this forum before, and so far no more script errors!

I will check the site for other updates, I'll take all I can get!

It took an hour and a half to download IE6...
But it looks to be worth it.

Thanks to everyone that replied.

Seagull,
glad the immediate problem was solved--scripting errors.

Not trying to be a stick in the mud, but Seamonkey will still be a more secure browser, b/c it is being actively developed and will be so at least for the near future--so to prevent a variety of spyware problems, I'd still use seamonkey as my everyday browser.

I'm glad to see that the move to IE6 solved your problems with script errors on web pages.

Now, on to the lack of printer drivers. Very often, you can get a printer driver by downloading it from the printer manufacturer's website. Some of these drivers go all the way back to Windows98.

The instructions for installing a printer with a downloaded driver can get a little intricate. The driver generally comes with installation instructions.

How does your printer attach to the laptop? Is it by USB cable?

I second the recommendation to look on driverguide.com. I've found drivers for old sound cards, modems, printers, scanners - you name it. You have to register to be able to download - but it's free.
