I went to the Blue Mountains when I was in Sydney. It was the start of April and it was FREEZING!! I'd hate to be there now if that was any indication.

I really don't have anything to say about the cold. I mean they can turn-down the AC to chilly.

Well, the Union Jack is there because we were settled by the English.
The large star (the "Federation star") has 7 points, each representing one of the states and territories (except for the ACT, which I presume is represented by the star itself. It's one of the elements that would stay in a new flag because of its symbolism (debate goes on and off as to whether we should replace the flag, whether we should become a Republic. Both will happen with time.
Most are in favour of a republic but the last referendum on the matter rejected it because of the model proposed, which basically equaled what we have now with the title of Governor General changed to President.
Then you've got the Southern Cross at the middle right which is kind of one of our national symbols. New Zealand has it on their flag too, although their stars are different colours, and they're missing the 'little' star in theirs if I recall correctly (the New Zealand and Australian flags quite often get mixed up).
It's really not surprising though, New Zealand almost became a part of Australia. They turned down the offer to become part of the country, though I'm certain there's provisions in our legal system for it.
I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen eventually. Not any time soon - perhaps a few hundred years down the road, though, that is, if the end hasn't come by then.
Oh, and did you know the secret ballot in the form it's most commonly used in was invented here?

I start TAFE on Monday at 9:30 am (but because of the trains, I have to leave home about 8am).
There's a convenient timing of trains at the interchange station early in the morning, which is why I leave at that time.
