I start TAFE on Monday at 9:30 am (but because of the trains, I have to leave home about 8am).

There's a convenient timing of trains at the interchange station early in the morning, which is why I leave at that time.

Depending on where you are, connections are better here, but the best connections are in downtown though.

Oh, I live on a branch line and change where the branch splits off (the TAFE is next to one of the stations on the continuation of the non-branch.

It's a tight-ish connection (3 minutes, but I've allowed for missing the connection anyway).

It's not a major major station that i'm transferring at so 3 mins is doable.

I'm also going in the OPPOSITE direction to the CBD. During the day, the connections are horrendous (a 20 minute wait!)

WOW, they actually guarantee 3 minutes? A transfer connection here while not short would be normal here.

This is a suburban system I'm talking about. No, it's not a guaranteed connection, just a convenient timetabling. I'm familiar enough with the station I'll be changing at to know that if it's on-time (or both trains are equally off-time), it's a makeable connection.

I'll be using the train for the simple reason that both ways of walking to the campus aren't that safe.

Ok, I have done that too, however buses and sometimes trains tend to run an erratic schedule around here instead.

Oh, I always have a fallback option. The next train comes something like 10 or 15 minutes later, which is still in time for class.

The buses around here work too, but the stops in this area are poorly signposted except for the two interchanges in the area, and frankly the frequencies aren't much better -- not to mention it's about the same (or less) distance to walk to the train station anyway.

Usually I keep a schedule handy for buses. The Government had a real bureaucratic way on figuring out how often buses run and when they leave, etc.

Trains are a little more regular, but the trolley system leaves a real lot to be desired though.

Well, it looks like they will be building a Mass Transit/Steel Rail/Train here on Oahu. It one of the Hot Topics it will cost millions of dollars and take years to build.

Now will it be underground? It does take much longer to build them that way than above ground. Also, will it be light rail trains or regular ones instead?

Nope, not underground. Above ground way above ground. One of the main problem is we have only seen pretty little pictures with pinpoints. Nothing real. This rail system will need to be held up some how...

So a lot of people are against it then?

So a lot of people are against it then?

There are people on both sides.

One of the most common argument against it is how it will serve only on part of the island but we all have to pay for it. I find this argument tired.

There is also some arguement of where the routes will go.

The people for argue that it will releive traffic. Which it may but it take years and cause few traffic problems. Before it can be used.

Sounds like the typical arguements/problems that come with rapid transit.

Heh, gotta love NIMBYism.

At the moment there's a rail line nearing completion in Sydney's north. Essentially it serves one of Sydney's universities, and one of our major suburban centres (we have some surprisingly established suburban CBDs that look like cities in their own right).

AAanyway, the line crosses over a minor national park. The original proposal was to build a bridge over the area. Now of course, the NIMBYs and BANANAs didn't like this. Eventually it all came to a head, and it was forced underground.

This had three other consequences: the line became longer (and hence more expensive), It caused the grades on at least part of the line to be undesirable (about 1:35), and thirdly, because of safety regulations regarding station depth, the cancellation of one of the stations -- which would have served a second campus of a different university.

As a flow on from this, that other university's campus is being wound down and is going to be redeveloped - enrolments to the campus have apparently been abysmal.

Oh, did I mention how many motorway tunnels we have?

Yep. Throw in a hopelessly inept State government and you'll see why Sydney's in a fix.

They're proposing a 40km metro line! To be fair, the inner half of it makes an IMMENSE amount of sense as it's a well established corridor that is currently served only by buses, but the other half (outside Epping, which interestingly enough is where the other line under construction in the north ends) would be better served by our traditional double-decked passenger service.

A second metro route is already being investigated. That second route is a no-brainer. It would loosely follow the existing Main West to Parramatta (which is Sydney's second largest CBD and is pretty much a city in its own right!) via Olympic Park (which has office complexes and apartments under construction all over).

The second line would eventually cross the harbour. A second rail crossing over the harbour will be needed, it's a matter of when.
