A few years ago I saw one of the officers who was involved in that incident speak about it on the 9th anniversary of it. He described his experience in vivid detail. What an awful story.

I was in alcohol rehab Dec 99 - Jan 00 at NARAD (In Patient recovery clinic) Camp Pendelton for active duty personnel and my bunk mate was with the Rangers there in Somalia - we would spend the nights talking about it after lights out. he knew the crew chief that was killed and drug thru the streets. He got out of the Army and went Navy. He was awarded a Purple Heart.

Blackhawk Down is a nonfiction book or a novelization of the movie?
I've never seen the movie. My best friend's brother was one of the first killed over there (helicopter taken out by fire) and it was so devastating for their family. I'm not sure I could live through those emotions again.

The book Non fiction - its more like a blow by blow minute by minute account of what happened in Mogadishu. Am sorry for your friend. I served over 20 yrs total in the military and been to war and I can understand fully about the emotions. But this is getting off topic tho.

Two of the best books I have ever read are:
Ray Bradbury's, Farenheit 451
and
Richard Weaver's, Ideas Have Consequences
also
Carl F. H. Henry's, The Uneasy Conscience of Modern Fundamentalsim (the book that began the evangelical movement)
and
St. Anselm's, Cur Deus Homo? (Why the God-Man or Why God Became Man)

I've declared this my Summer of Southern Literature (or should that be "Ah've de-clay-ad this mah summah of suth-un litera-chooah"?).
Finally finished Standing in the Rainbow (Fannie Flagg) which I'd started last summer, and immediately went to the library yesterday and checked out Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (also Fannie Flagg; never saw the movie), Queen Bee of Mimosa Branch (Haywood Smith), and Cold Sassy Tree (Olive Ann Burns).
Ahhh, the stories of my people. :)

I read The Austere Academy (Book the Fifth) from Lemony Snicket. Such easy reads...and quite elegant...

Just re-read "Rebecca" for the umpteenth time. At first reading I wasn't that impressed- too stuck on the fact that we never know the protagonist's name, I guess- but it gets better and better every time I read it now. I'm reading Jane Eyre through again too. That book always impressed me, and I could relate more to her than to the heroine of Rebecca. Also starting Treasure Island.

I am reading "Success God's way" by Charles Stanley....and
I am rereading the "Aloha Cove" series. I love this series; and I will recommend it to teenagers and all the young at heart.

Since I made C.S. Lewis a topic of another post, I went today and checked it out from the Library. I'm going to give it another shot.
I've realized over the last several years that I'm reading books so as to finish them; not necessarily to enjoy the story or soak up the information. Time is such a luxury at my house so I think that's how I developed that bad habit.

I really enjoyed Cold Sassy Tree, p31woman. Fannie Flagg is always an interesting writer too.
I was reading a bunch of things but we picked up the At Home in Mitford set (1-6 at least) for dh's mother. I'm reading the ones I haven't read before. (2, 5, 6)

I just started listening to Thr3e, by Ted Dekker, last night. I ordered several books recently at bargain prices, and accidentally ordered the audio version of Thr3e.  Can't beat the price though. It was only $2.99! It's great mistake, though. I feel like a kid again at story time. The guy even does all the voices! lol

i read some of Watchmann Nee.....found his stuff to be pretty cool.
I also, just finished the Mary story by Rivers......that is a wow!!! Totally enjoyed that story. Trying to get all 5 of her books, i think i have 2 or 3.

I recently finished Dekker's trilogy and am starting Obsessed.Would like to read more of Daniel Silva as well, but have too many things on my shelf now.
Rosie, I haven't read any of Watchman Nee but have heard good of him.
This has been my pleasure reading to break up the more serious reading I'm into right now.

is that pleasure reading, Christian Fiction???
I am finding it hard to come up w/pleasure reading.....i have all of this heavy stuff, but sometimes my mind isnt for it, and then i dont read anything.

Dekker is Christian. I enjoyed what Rivers I've read, but haven't read many: maybe two-The Shofar Blew and something else I can't remember. It is hard to find Christian literature on par with great literature. Silva was not Christian ,but good reads. I browse here regularly to find new authors and titles.

"Anthem" by Ayn Rand. This book is all about individualism and the thwarting of organizations that would force conformity on the populace. Well, it's a bit deeper than that as well but I don't have the time to explain.

I just finished "A Son Called Gabriel" Didn't care for it much. Just started (on the bus coming home from work) "When I Lived in Modern Times" it seems to be okay. I also just read the first two books in Jan Karon's Mitford series over the weekend, they are pleasant little stories.
I have Icy Sparks sitting here but I'm not much interested in it, someone passed it along so I'll probably read it since it's here but glancing at the first few paragraphs I wasn't that interested.
