Oh yeah, you have to expect some problems but a black eye probably wasn't even what your mom was worried about. I completely expect to encounter violence if I continue to walk there regularly. Been rehearsing what I would do if a knife was pulled on me. My son had a knife pulled on him recently, in a better neighbourhood, and I'm very impressed with how well he handled it. If anyone wants a link to where he blogged about it, send me a pm. He's got an entire blog about his misadventures.

Well, it was quite violent the person who I was with were getting hit quite hard! This was on a busy street too! Then someone saw what was going on and "rescued" us.

a friend of mine tells a story back in his days in the Navy. After a long day in New York City, he said they were broke and walking back to the Navy base in the middle of the night. (No idea what part of the city that would be, but apparently they were in a bad neighborhood.) He said that a city bus went by and saw them walking. The bus driver slammed on the brakes and backed up. Then he yelled out the window: "Get on this bus...NOW!!!"

Yes, NYC can be very dangerous, but then again every major city has dangerous areas though. I remember having a conversation with someone a few years ago how statistically that Denver, CO is safer than Boston. He only replied with Boston is a cake walk compared to Denver!

We're not too far from Detroit. And I work very close to Detroit. There was a T-shirt that I saw once that said "I'm so bad, I vacation in Detroit!"

LOL! Now both Detriot and St. Louis compete for most dangerous city every couple of years. Never been to Detriot per say, however I have been to St. Louis a few times now though.

Our car broke down just West of St. Louis once. That would have been 1981. It was about 3 am. We ended up driving across Missouri on one less cylinder until we could find an auto parts store open in the morning.

In the movie National Lampoon's vacation, there is a scene where they end up in a bad neigborhood. At the time I thought that it was NYC, however since they were driving from Suburban Illinois, that cannot be so. Then I thought that it was Chicago instead, but again, logistics said that it couldn't be. In the end I concluded that the only place that they could have been was St. Louis instead.

Yes, I remember that scene too. Always thought it was in St. Louis.

The scene just seemed to have the stereo type of either Harlem or South Chicago instead.

There was a joke about the riots in Watts (a suburb of Los Angeles, California) that several city blocks were destroyed. Damage estimates were as high as $50.00.

Then there was that whole thing with the riots back in '92 as well.

Bonus!! The Ron Clark Story is on now right after Time To Kill. Story about a teacher who went into Harlem to teach and helped the kids to learn how to excel despite their circumstance.

I've seen a movie about Ron Clark and what he did in Harlem. I love the movie. So inspirational, and knowing that he's real and not just a fictional character is just awesome.

Ray, congrats on the weight loss! You are doing so well!

I hope they can do something for Tooshy's knees, and your MIL's lungs. I'm glad dd#2 and her dh are still together. I hope he can get a job soon. Glad Brownie and Q were able to make such good friends.

Vacation days are coming up starting on Friday and the following week. On Saturday we're all going to the zoo with the grand-baby.

Thanks. I think we decided to take our lunch and rent a wagon to carry everything. Would be a lot cheaper than buying lunch at the zoo, which gets very expensive.

Actually I have tons of vacation on the books. Vacation days can be banked from one year to the next. I could go on vacation at this point and not come back until August.

Seems to me you should start using them up before you can't!

Wow, that's a lot!! Where I work...it's use it or lose it.

I don't have a whole lot left now at this point. Next year though because of the increased hours I will have more next year.

When my brother died, he had a full vacation bank too. I thought that was such a waste.

In a couple years, there will be an additional week's vacation.

I've been saving up vacation days because it would be good to be able to take some time off should Tooshy have surgery. Also you never know when there'll be a funeral. Our families are so spread out that most funerals would be far away.
