WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain was projected to be the winner of primaries in Connecticut, New Jersey and Illinois on Tuesday night, reaching for command of the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

In the the hotly contested coast-coast struggle for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Barack Obama was projected to take two victories, one in his home state of Illinois, a big prize on Super Tuesday, while Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was also projected to win two states, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

NBC News projected that McCain would win in GOP contest in Connecticut, Illinois and New Jersey, and Mitt Romney would win in Massachusetts, where he once was governor. Earlier, former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee, won a deal-laden Republican convention in West Virginia.

(WTNH) _ This might cause a headache for Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign in Connecticut. It's Chelsea Clinton inside a New Haven polling place at 6:00 a.m.

So why might this be an issue? According to state law, candidates or a candidate's representative, such as someone wearing a sign, have to stay 75-feet away from polling places "on the day of any primary".

The daughter of the Democratic presidential candidate was delivering a box of coffee to poll workers and talking with a firefighter in New Haven. According to a News Channel 8 photographer who was there, when the moderator announced that the polls are open, Clinton immediately went outside.

Obama, the Illinois senator, was getting support from more than four in 10 women and about the same number of whites, leaving him just a few percentage points behind Clinton. That was a narrower deficit than he has faced in most states that have held nominating contests so far, with part of his strength coming from people under age 44, whom he was dominating.

Barack Obama in the past has openly spoken of his respect and attachment to Pastor Wright, getting married by him in his church and calling him his "spiritual mentor" offering many other signs of respect.

Because he has been a revered figure in the life of presidential aspirant Barack Obama for two decades, Wright's political views, which he commonly draws from the tenets of liberation theology, are worthy of some scrutiny—if only to shed light on the teachings that have had enough resonance to retain Obama as a TUCC congregant since 1988. So great is Obama's respect for Wright, that the former sought the Reverend's counsel before formally declaring his candidacy for U.S. President. Moreover, Obama and his wife selected Wright to perform their wedding ceremony and to baptize their two daughters. These are honors of considerable magnitude, and it is reasonable to speculate that if we learn more about Rev. Wright, we may gain some insight into the personal qualities and belief systems Barack Obama holds in high regard.

When we read the writings, public statements, and sermons of Rev. Wright, we quickly notice his unmistakable conviction that America is a nation infested with racism, prejudice, and injustices that make life very difficult for black people. As he declared in one of his sermons: "Racism is how this country was founded and how this country is still run!... We [Americans] believe in white supremacy and black inferiority and believe it more than we believe in God."

Clinton, on other hand, is strongest among whites without a college degree--the white working class. In New Jersey, she wins voters without a college degree by 54 to 43 percent. If whites alone were counted, that number would be around 60 percent. She also does well among senior citizens and, of course, white women voters.

Intelligence officials also said they used a controversial interrogation tactic known as "waterboarding," which some people regard as torture, only on three senior al Qaeda members early in the war on terror and that it has not been used in five years.

In a surprise twist after a chaotic Super Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) passed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in network tallies of the number of delegates the candidates racked up last night.

The Obama camp now projects topping Clinton by 13 delegates, 847 to 834.

NBC News, which is projecting delegates based on the Democratic Party's complex formula, figures Obama will wind up with 840 to 849 delegates, versus 829 to 838 for Clinton.

Congress on Wednesday sent to President Bush two bills that would make permanent a program to protect consumers from unwanted phone calls from telemarketers. Its hallmark is the national "do not call" list.

"This initiative has proven to be one of the most popular laws in history," said Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C. Extending the program was necessary "to avoid the wrath of millions of angry constituents."

The Do Not Call Registry, initiated in 2003, has been widely acclaimed for allowing Americans to eat their suppers in peace. Some 150 million people have listed their phones on the registry, which prohibits calls from telemarketers.

Last year, at least 26 San Diego County residents were kidnapped and held for ransom in Tijuana, Rosarito Beach or Ensenada, local FBI agents overseeing the cases said yesterday. In 2006, at least 11 county residents had been kidnapped in the three communities.

“Some of the 26 were recovered, some were hurt and some were killed,” said agent Alex Horan, who directs the FBI's violent-crime squad in San Diego.

Here lieth the campaign of Mitt Romney, victim of the mistaken belief that the only way to succeed in national Republican politics was to turn yourself into something you are not. Or maybe the campaign revealed what his closest friends never imaged him to be. They thought he was a decent classy guy. But maybe he really is a soulless throat-cutter who would do and say anything to win.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was a good fellow who didn't know enough about national politics and listened to people who gave him bad, cynical advice.

Sen. John McCain was in a good position before; now it's hard to imagine that he won't wrap up the nomination in the next week or two. His lone remaining serious opponent, Mike Huckabee, has exceeded expectations, but expecting him to be able to unhorse McCain is perhaps expecting too much.

CAIR was listed among "entities who are and/or were members of the US Muslim Brotherhood's Palestine Committee." Now, in a federal court filing from December, federal prosecutors have described CAIR as "having conspired with other affiliates of the Muslim Brotherhood to support terrorists." The government also stated that "proof that the conspirators used deception to conceal from the American public their connections to terrorists was introduced" in the Dallas Holy Land Foundation trial last year and the Chicago trial of the Hamas men in 2006.

The government also stated that another organization, the Muslim American Society (MAS) was "founded as the overt arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States." This appears to be the first time the US government has officially described the true origins and ulterior agenda of the Muslim American Society. And no disagreement can possibly make him worse than Hillary Clinton would be for our country, or for the conservative values and principles we know are essential for our nation's future.

It seems to me that on two of the most critical issues we face, John McCain has rock solid conservative credentials.

Huckabee to get evangelical leader's nod
I already voted for Huck yesterday before Dobson's endorsement; I talk alot of politics w/ friends and never ever recall a single conversation about what Dobson thinks.

As to yesterday's vote; I missed the Giants parade & business/dinner in the city to maybe meet a friend coming in from out of state.... because I had to have a medical procedure & then be in the ambulatory recovery room+++, when I finally got back into Brooklyn it was like 8pm w/ polls closing in an hour.

As usual I signed in but when I got in the booth couldn't pull the lever for Huck or any GOPer, only the sickening weak dems.

I had to inquire as to why I couldn't vote for the GOP & was told by at minimum two pollsters that I was registered as a democrat (which is not my party); it caused alot of drama as in my part of Brooklyn republicans are rare.

They had to get a republican official on-site that worked w/ the pollsters in unfreezing the machine & getting me a paper ballot to vote in another secluded area, where I cast my vote for Huckabee. Who is a fellow believer..and right on conservative social issues.Thompson & others that dropped out were still on the selections but Huck was the only 1 left who I might be closer to in our ways of thinking. Paul of course is way too nutty.

So there I was after being told because of the medications given me earlier (I must have been still a bit woozy as I thought for a moment if they couldn't rectify the problem--I would go back behind the curtain & vote for Obama)even though told to make no major decisions & being in a polling place where republicans are a rare breed & put through alot of stuff in order to get to vote.But hey, people have died so that each of us would have this right..

Of course I knew Huck wasn't going to get alot of NY votes nor likely be the final candidate. But as I have--- since allowed to vote when I reached the legal age...I was right there taking part in this great democracy-hospital day or not-it's always that important.

Mitt Romney suspended his presidential campaign yesterday, after his poor showing on Super Tuesday made a victory over John McCain all but mathematically impossible. As much as McCain and Mike Huckabee loathe Mitt, it's been easy to imagine them conspiring to deliver the killing stroke. Conventional wisdom says Huckabee won five southern states outright and helped turn others, such as Missouri, to McCain by taking conservative votes away from Romney.

But Romney probably wasn't going to earn those ballots anyway. Southern states have GOP primary electorates dominated by evangelical Christians, specifically by Southern Baptists. And many of those Southern Baptists are committed to blocking the ascension of a Mormon to the presidency.

For the conservative pundits backing Romney who missed this story, ideology trumps theology. But for many evangelicals, it's the other way around. Southern Baptists and Mormons are not only two of the four largest religious denominations in the country, they are the most aggressive of American missionary faiths, and have been on a collision course for generations.

Representative Pat Toomey, now head of the Club for Growth, has some suggestions for him in an article in today's Wall Street Journal. He recommends five conservatives: South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford; South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint; Indiana Representative Mike Pence; former Senator Phil Gramm; and Forbes CEO Steve Forbes. The final two are probably better suited to be Secretary of the Treasury. (And McCain floating Forbes for that slot early could help him in his efforts to convince McCain doubters that he takes seriously his pledge today to draw heavily on the advice of his "fellow conservatives.") Each of the other three -- Sanford, DeMint and Pence -- would bring conservative credentials and seriousness about policy that would surely help McCain among the Republican base.

That's a nice list to start. I doubt, however, whether McCain would choose a House member. Gramm has been out of politics 6 years and Forbes longer than that. And I think tactically speaking, McCain will be looking at someone who can bring him a state or two on election day. He's already got South Carolina so that would seem to rule out Sanford and Demint.

In campaigning for his wife last month on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, Clinton called Obama's opposition to the Iraq war "a fairy tale." Clinton suggested Obama had toned down his early anti-war fervor during his 2004 Senate campaign.

"Barack Obama is not a fairy tale. He is real," former Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder told reporters at a Democratic fundraiser as the former president spent the day campaigning for Hillary Rodham Clinton in Richmond and three other Virginia cities.

I admit the political landscape seems bleak and limited. So to console myself, I am dwelling on the possible Vice Presidents each might choose.

The Vice President of the United States, hereafter to be referred to as Veep (the term coined by Alban Barkley, who was President Truman’s Vice President) is first in the line of succession to a President who is removed, resigns or dies. The Veep, as designated by our Constitution, is also the President of the Senate and can break tie votes. That can be crucial in a closely divided Congress.


I don’t want to get into Electoral College arcana here, but in the past each elector was permitted two votes and the candidate who came in second became the Veep almost automatically after a process in Congress. Just think: we could have either version of Obama/Hillary or McCain/Huck/Romney

Mr. Obama won 59% of the delegates to the state convention that will select national delegates, while Mrs. Clinton had 41%, with 91% of the precincts reporting. On Saturday, Mr. Obama also prevailed by healthy margins at caucuses in Nebraska, Louisiana, Washington, and the Virgin Islands.

In an e-mail message to colleagues, Ms. Solis Doyle, who moved to Iowa last year to oversee Mrs. Clinton's ultimately unsuccessful effort there, alluded to some exhaustion but made no reference to the campaign's difficulties or the challenges it faces in the coming weeks.

Rick Perry has no regrets about his proposal requiring sixth grade girls to get a vaccine protecting them from a sexually transmitted disease, even though reports surfaced that some vaccine recipients suffered miscarriages while others had numbness or paralysis after the vaccine was administered.

A year ago, Perry, a Republican, signed an executive order making Texas the first state in the country to require girls entering the sixth grade to get a Gardasil vaccination to guard against Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a leading cause of cervical cancer. It didn't take long for the Texas Legislature to enact a veto-proof law overriding the order and prohibiting schools from requiring the vaccine.

Recent reports to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many of them still unconfirmed, show that more than 3,000 adverse reactions to the vaccine have been reported. The reports are made through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which is essentially raw data that the CDC and FDA must verify. (See earlier story)

The 80-year-old Democrat, who represented his northern California district since 1981, had announced on January 2 that he would retire from Congress at the end of this year because of ill health. He was diagnosed with cancer in late December.

It was so cold that resident Nick McDougall couldn't even get his car trunk lid to close after he got out his charger to kick-start his dead battery. By late morning, the temperature had risen all the way to 18—below zero.

"This is about as cold as it gets, this is bad. There's no wind—it's just cold," said McDougall, 48, a worker at The Fisherman, a convenience store and gas station in the town on the Canadian border. "People just don't go out, unless you have to go to work."

Late-night comedians won't be laughing if John McCain and Barack Obama are the nominees.


If Barack Obama and John McCain end up facing each other in the general election this year, one particular special interest group will find itself unexpectedly discomfited: the comedy writers of America. Politically, these men and women may well support one or the other of the two candidates enthusiastically. But professionally, they will find an Obama-McCain contest a burden, for the simple reason that it is surprisingly difficult to make fun of either candidate. The result might well be the least entertaining presidential election in recent history. But also, perhaps, from a civic point of view, the healthiest.

The reasons for the two men's relative immunity from mockery and satire are different. In Obama's case, it begins with his enormously appealing public persona, and his obvious, heartfelt sincerity. Try mocking a candidate like this and you will probably end up looking mean-spirited and cynical. The racial factor contributes as well. Whites have a hard time publicly mocking brilliant, accomplished African Americans like Obama, for fear of seeming to draw on racial stereotypes. It's telling that while "Saturday Night Live," routinely features presidents and presidential candidates in its skits, and has done so since the days of Chevy Chase and Gerald Ford, it has never had one of its actors impersonate Obama. The one time a "Barack Obama" appeared on the show, last fall, it was the candidate himself, in a cameo. As for McCain, the most important reason is, of course, his heroism as a P.O.W. in Vietnam. Try mocking a man who has sacrificed as much for his country as McCain, and you end up looking not only mean-spirited, but positively unpatriotic.

The extent to which both Obama and McCain are impervious to the sort of mockery which proved so destructive to Al Gore or John Kerry has been obscured, in recent months, by the Hollywood writers' strike--which has therefore, objectively, worked to both men's disadvantage. After all, Hillary Clinton and the recently-departed Mitt Romney are anything but invulnerable to mockery and satire. Imagine what the skit-writers from "Saturday Night Live" could have done with Clinton's "angry moment" in the New Hampshire debate, or Bill Clinton's frantic attacks on Obama. And even though the smartest political satire on TV, "The Daily Show," has been back on the air for a month, without its writers the comedy has suffered, with host Jon Stewart more inclined to draw blood from Wolf Blitzer than from the candidates, or while staging a (hilarious and silly) mock-feud with Conan O'Brien. Hillary in particular should give thanks that the writers' strike has decreased the number and intensity of barbs fired at her from late-night television.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and her advisers increasingly believe that, after a series of losses, she has been boxed into a must-win position in the Ohio and Texas primaries on March 4, and she has begun reassuring anxious donors and superdelegates that the nomination is not slipping away from her, aides said on Monday.

Mrs. Clinton held a buck-up-the-troops conference call on Monday with donors, superdelegates and other supporters; several said afterward that she had sounded tired and a little down, but determined about Ohio and Texas.

They also said that they had not been especially soothed, and that they believed she might be on a losing streak that could jeopardize her competitiveness in those states.

Reaction was swift -- and predictable. Both Sens. Clinton and Obama, locked in a slash-and-burn contest for Democratic dollars and delegates, quickly dispatched dueling news releases, each claiming dominance over the presumptive Republican nominee. Earlier in the day, Howard Dean, their party's chairman, warned that delay in choosing a standard-bearer could jeopardize Democratic hopes in November: "The idea that we can afford to have a big fight at the convention and then win the race in the next eight weeks ... is not a good scenario." Regrettably, some of my conservative friends seem unwilling or unable to grasp that the same applies to the GOP and appear disposed to squander an obvious advantage.

My "colleagues" in the so-called mainstream media gladly roll their cameras and recorders for those who assert that "McCain is not a real conservative" or who say, "I can never support him," and the ones claiming, "I just won't vote this year." It is, for me, a disheartening display because I have, as we say in the Marines, "been there -- done that."

Erik Stanley, a lawyer with the ADF, told WND the complaint against Pastor Wiley Drake, of Buena Park First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, Calif., is straight-forward because Drake endorsed a presidential candidate as an individual, not as a representative of his church.

An immigration reform organization is praising the decision of a federal judge to uphold an Arizona law that prohibits businesses from knowingly hiring illegal aliens and yanks the business licenses of those that do.

U.S. District Judge Neil Wake dismissed a lawsuit filed by business groups that argued the law unconstitutionally infringes on federal immigration powers. But Wake concluded there is no conflict with federal immigration law because it specifically lets states regulate business licensing. Recently another federal judge upheld a similar measure in Valley Park, Missouri.

Ira Mehlman with the Federation for American Immigration Reform says good case law is being built among these judges. "[They] have said there is absolutely no conflict between local governments enforcing immigration laws and the federal government's authority over immigration policy," he adds.

Even Obama supporters have been forced into corners because of the issue, with one likening the Texas state Republican Party to Guevara, to whom have been attributed hundreds of executions of anti-Castro leaders.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua: President Daniel Ortega, who led the 1979 revolution in Nicaragua, says Barack Obama's presidential bid is a "revolutionary" phenomenon in the United States.

"It's not to say that there is already a revolution under way in the U.S. ... but yes, they are laying the foundations for a revolutionary change," the Sandinista leader said Wednesday night as he accepted an honorary doctorate from an engineering university.

Ortega led a Soviet-backed government that battled U.S.-supported Contra rebels before he lost power in a 1990 election. He returned to office last year via the ballot box.

Blogger Steve Bartin, who has been following Obama's career and involvement with the Chicago socialists, has uncovered a fascinating video showing Obama campaigning for openly socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Interestingly, Sanders, who won his seat in 2006, called Obama "one of the great leaders of the United States Senate," even though Obama had only been in the body for about two years. In 2007, the National Journal said that Obama had established himself as "the most liberal Senator." More liberal than Sanders? That is quite a feat. Does this make Obama a socialist, too?

Even Obama supporters have been forced into corners because of the issue, with one likening the Texas state Republican Party to Guevara, to whom have been attributed hundreds of executions of anti-Castro leaders.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton desperately wants meaningless wins in Florida and Michigan to turn into votes she can count on. It won't be easy with the Democratic National Committee rules standing in her way.

The DNC is refusing to back down from the tough sanctions it imposed on the two states, which held early contests in violation of party rules. They have been stripped of all their delegates to the national convention in August where either Clinton or rival Barack Obama will be nominated for president.

The DNC has offered Florida and Michigan a couple ways out in compliance with party rules. First, they could hold second nominating contests, but Democratic leaders in both states reject that idea. Or they can appeal to the DNC's credentials committee, a 186-member body that usually operates in obscurity and has a complicated membership and rules process that will require deft maneuvering in this divided campaign.

The former first lady's victory in the popular vote swung the final unallocated New Mexico delegate into her column, which gave Clinton 14 delegates in the state to 12 for Obama.

Beneath the deceptively placid surface of everyday life, the British population is engaged in a momentous encounter with Islam. Three developments of the past week, each of them culminating years' long trends – and not just some odd occurrence – exemplify changes now underway.

First, the UK government has decided that terrorism by Muslims in the name of Islam is actually unrelated to Islam, or is even anti-Islamic. This notion took root in 2006 when the Foreign Office, afraid that the term "war on terror" would inflame British Muslims, sought language that upholds "shared values as a means to counter terrorists." By early 2007, the European Union issued a classified handbook that banned jihad, Islamic, and fundamentalist in reference to terrorism, offering instead some "non-offensive" phrases. Last summer, Prime Minister Gordon Brown prohibited his ministers from using the word Muslim in connection with terrorism. In January, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith went further, actually describing terrorism as "anti-Islamic." And last week the Home Office completed the obfuscation by issuing a counter-terrorism phrasebook that instructs civil servants to refer only to violent extremism and criminal murderers, not Islamist extremism and jihadi-fundamentalists.

Second, and again culminating several years of evolution, the British government now recognizes polygamous marriages. It changed the rules in the "Tax Credits (Polygamous Marriages) Regulations 2003": previously, only one wife could inherit assets tax-free from a deceased husband; this legislation permits multiple wives to inherit tax-free, so long as the marriage had been contracted where polygamy is legal, as in Nigeria, Pakistan, or India. In a related matter, the Department for Work and Pensions began issuing extra payments to harems for such benefits as jobseeker allowances, housing subventions, and council tax relief. Last week came news that, after a year-long review, four government departments (Work and Pensions, Treasury, Revenue and Customs, Home Office) concluded that formal recognition of polygamy is "the best possible" option for Her Majesty's Government.
