Could Obama strike down all state pro-life laws?
Jim Brown - OneNewsNow - 8/12/2008 7:00:00 AMBookmark and Share

The editor of a pro-life news service says a draft copy of the proposed Democratic Party platform that will be approved later this month in Denver continues the party's historic pro-abortion stance and mirrors Barack Obama's extreme support for abortion.

The proposed Democratic Party platform announces unequivocal support for Roe v. Wade and direct taxpayer funding of abortions. Steven Ertelt, editor of LifeNews.com, obtained the draft platform from a pro-life group that is urging the Democratic Party to moderate its stance on abortion.

Ertelt says the platform draft also expresses support for the so-called "Freedom of Choice Act" -- a bill Senator Obama promised Planned Parenthood last summer would be the first piece of legislation he signs as president. According to Ertelt, the measure would overturn all of the pro-life laws nationwide.

Study: Media Covered Up Rev. Wright’s Extremism

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 2:58 PM

By: Jim Meyers Article Font Size

The three major network news outlets “censored and manipulated” Barack Obama’s longtime pastor Jeremiah Wright’s sound bites to cover up his extremism, a new study by the Media Research Center charges.

In a report scheduled for release Wednesday, the MRC states: “Rev. Wright’s noxious recorded sermons suggesting that America deserved 9/11 and that the federal government created AIDS as a tool of black genocide were widely viewed on YouTube and discussed on talk radio and cable TV. But what about the network news shows, the programs most watched by the least politically involved viewers?...

“A Media Research Center study of ABC, CBS, and NBC news broadcasts from the formal announcement of the Obama campaign on February 10, 2007 through July 15 reveals that a viewer watching only broadcast TV news would have received a much more limited (and even censored) version of Wright’s sermons.”

Russia May Turn Focus to Pro-U.S. Ukraine After Beating Georgia

By Henry Meyer

Aug. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Now that Russia has humiliated Georgia with a punishing military offensive, it may shift its attention to reining in pro-Western Ukraine, another American ally in the former Soviet Union.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's first order of business likely will be to try to thwart Ukraine's bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

``The Moscow authorities will use this opportunity to remind Ukraine of the damages of allying itself with NATO,'' said Geoffrey Smith at Renaissance Capital investment bank in Kiev.

A big surprise on gas
You may not believe it, but fuel is more affordable than it was during the early '60s.

Barack Obama thinks the government should intervene on gas prices to "give families some relief," and last week called for releasing 70 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. John McCain proposes an end to the ban on offshore drilling and has pushed for a gas-tax holiday because "we need it, we need it very badly."

But both candidates and the public are evidently unaware of a basic fact: Gasoline is more affordable for American families now than it was in the days of the gas-guzzling muscle cars of the early 1960s. Prices are beginning to come down somewhat, but this was true even when the national average was at its summer peak.

Two-thirds of American voters say they think that the price of gas is "an extremely important political issue," and many believe that it will cause them "serious" financial hardship, according to a recent survey by the Associated Press and Yahoo.

Obama -- the pro-'gay' candidate
Jeff Johnson - OneNewsNow - 8/11/2008 10:35:00 AMBookmark and Share

According to at least one political analyst, Barack Obama has gone farther in supporting the homosexual agenda than any other presidential candidate in history.

Peter LaBarbera, founder of Republicans for Family Values, says a recent letter from the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee to a homosexual activist group confirms the extremism of his positions.

"He advocates the full repeal of DOMA, which goes farther than Hillary Clinton, who only recommended repealing part of the Defense of Marriage Act," note LaBarbera. "He's talking about opening up the military to homosexuality in a time of war. He's talking about 'gay' adoption -- putting children in homes that are intentionally fatherless or intentionally motherless, and using the White House bully pulpit to do that."

Focus on the Family Action pulled a video from its Web site today that asked people to pray for "rain of biblical proportions" during Barack Obama's Aug. 28 appearance at Invesco Field at Mile High to accept the Democratic nomination for president.

Stuart Shepard, director of digital media at Focus Action, the political arm of Focus on the Family, said the video he wrote and starred in was meant to be "mildly humorous."

But complaints from about a dozen Focus members convinced the organization to pull the video, said Tom Minnery, Focus Action vice president of public policy.

No Compromises: Kansas State Bishops Declare Voting for Abortion Candidate is "Evil"

By Peter J. Smith

KANSAS CITY, August 12, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A vote cast for a politician who supports abortion and same-sex "marriage" is nothing less than casting a vote for "evil" says a state conference of Catholic bishops.

In a voter's guide released for the second time since 2006, the Kansas Catholic Bishops make it clear that Catholics would "commit moral evil" by voting for a candidate who embraces abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning, and same-sex "marriage," when a morally acceptable candidate is available.

The voter's guide signed by Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City, bishops Ronald Gilmore of Dodge City, Paul Coakley of Salina, and Michael Jackels of Wichita sends a strong message to Catholics that advancing pro-abortion candidates and their aims is incompatible with the Catholic Faith. The statement means trouble not only for Catholic politicians like pro-abortion US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, but also for the conservative Catholic Doug Kmiec, a well known constitutional law professor who endorsed Obama as a "natural" for the Catholic vote.

BREAKING NEWS: Bush to send Secretary of State Rice to Georgia

Bush says US expects Russians to leave Georgia

By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush is expressing concern that Russia might be violating the cease-fire in Georgia. He said the United States expects all Russian forces to withdraw from Georgia and that Moscow honor the truce after its punishing attacks against Georgia.

Bush said he was sending Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Paris and then to Georgia to express solidarity with the democratically elected government there.

Bush spoke in the Rose Garden after meeting with his national security team over the crisis in Russia. He said he strongly supported France's efforts to broker an end to the fighting. Bush said that Russia must allow the US and other countries to deliver humanitarian assistance in Georgia.

TBILISI, Georgia - Russian tanks rolled into the strategic Georgian city of Gori on Wednesday then pressed deeper into Georgia territory, smashing an EU-brokered truce designed to end six-day conflict that has uprooted 100,000 people and scarred the Georgian landscape.

Georgian officials said Gori was looted and bombed by the Russians. An AP reporter later saw dozens of tanks and military vehicles leaving Gori, roaring south.

Soldiers waved at journalists and one soldier shouted, perhaps jokingly, to a photographer: "Come with us, beauty, we're going to Tbilisi!"

Bush Orders Military to Deliver Aid to Georgia

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

WASHINGTON — President Bush has directed the U.S. military to lead a humanitarian mission to Georgia where tens of thousands have been forced out of their homes following a Russian invasion last week that has been described by Georgia's president as an "ethnic cleansing."

Bush said a U.S. C-17 aircraft with humanitarian supplies is already on its way and U.S. aircraft and Naval forces will deliver humanitarian and medical supplies to the country in the coming days.

"The mission will be vigorous and ongoing," Bush said from the White House Rose Garden with Defense Secretary Bob Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice by his side.

"This is Abkhazian land," one proclaimed. They say they are laying claim to what has historically been Abkhazian territory and that Georgian troops left without challenging them.

The fighters had moved across a thin slice of land dotted with Georgian villages.

Lieberman Blasts Obama On Georgia

Wednesday, August 13, 2008 5:55 PM

TEANECK, N.J. — Former Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Joe Lieberman slammed Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday over the Russian invasion of Georgia and said that the Democrat still wasn’t experienced enough for the White House.

“We’ve got a real clear choice to make. And I say it respectfully to Sen. Obama because he’s a gifted young man. But he’s not ready to be president on Jan. 20th of 2009,” Lieberman, of Connecticut, told a fund raising event for Republican hopeful John McCain.

“As the Russians move into Georgia as aggressors, and if you read the statements from the beginning, from Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama, one had a kind of moral neutrality to it that comes I think from inexperience.

Georgia president signs cease-fire with Russia

BILISI, Georgia – A reluctant Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said Friday he signed a cease-fire agreement with Russia and declared in the presence of the chief U.S. diplomat that the West had behaved in ways that invited the invasion.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she had been assured that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will sign an identical document. The United States says the pact protects the former Soviet republic's interests despite concessions to Moscow.

"With this signature by Georgia, this must take place and take place now," Rice said. She did not say what, if anything, the United States would do if Russia defies the truce.

New York (AP) - Horrified bystanders banded together to lift a 5-ton school bus off a pregnant woman pinned underneath, enabling doctors to save her son.

Donnette Sanz, 33, a traffic agent for the city police department, was pronounced dead Thursday, shortly after her baby's birth by an emergency Caesarean section. The 3-pound, 6-ounce boy was in critical condition.

Sanz was walking across a Bronx street around lunchtime Thursday when she was struck by a van that pushed her in front of the bus.

How Obama deceives non-discerning Christians
Posted: August 15, 2008

1:00 am Eastern

Using biblical imagery to elevate oneself to a biblical-character status is not new in presidential politics, but to use these imageries to deliberately mislead people is a new low level in personal ambition.

Barack Obama knows he does not believe that Jesus is the only way to eternal salvation. "For there is no other name under heaven by which men can be saved." This is the cornerstone of true Christianity. All other "Jesus believers" who don't embrace this biblical truth are not "true Christians." Neither Obama's former church nor his former pastor for over 20 years embrace this foundational fact. Yet Obama uses Christian lingo, such as "I came to Jesus" or "I committed my life to Jesus" or "I knelt before the Cross," which gives the impression that he is a true believer.

Secondly, "true Christians" know that the task of taking care of the poor is their responsibility, not the government's. The Bible makes it clear that "justice" is the government's task, but "mercy" is God's and His children's. Yet to alleviate the guilt of semi-religious people, Obama detracts the attention of the unsuspecting from his position on killing babies in their mother's womb and the recognition of sodomy as an alternate lifestyle, and centers their focus on the so-called "poor."

Influential Pastor to Bring Candidates Together for the First Time

John McCain and Barack Obama bickered for weeks over the kind of debates they wanted — but when California pastor Rick Warren asked them to put that aside and join him for a candidates’ forum, the answer, of course, was yes.

The two political rivals will join Warren Saturday evening at his 23,000-member Saddleback Church, taking the same stage to answer the same questions for the first time.

The event is not technically a debate, or the kind of free-form joint town hall meeting McCain had advocated. Warren will ask each candidate the same set of questions separately.

Russia: Will begin pullout from Georgia on Monday

GORI, Georgia – Russia's president promised to start withdrawing forces from positions in Georgia on Monday, but suggested they could stay in the breakaway region at the heart of the fighting that has reignited Cold War tensions.

Top American officials said Washington would rethink its relationship with Moscow after its military drive deep into its much smaller neighbor and called for a swift Russian withdrawal.

"I think that there is a real concern that Russia has turned the corner here and is headed back toward its past rather than toward its future, and my hope is that we will see actions in the weeks and months to come that provide us some reassurance," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Sunday.

Obama Doesn’t Extend Kind Words in Church Onto Campaign Trail
by Associated Press
Sunday, August 17, 2008

RENO, Nev. — So much for hugging in church.

A day after Barack Obama and John McCain exchanged an embrace during a faith forum at a California megachurch, Obama called the U.S. economy a disaster thanks to “John McCain’s president, George W. Bush,” and chided his Republican rival’s campaign team for trying to make him look unpatriotic and weak.

At a town hall meeting with several hundred union members, Obama said he had had a great conversation with McCain at the forum at Saddleback Church sponsored by the popular evangelical pastor Rick Warren. The two candidates shook hands, briefly hugged and stood onstage with Warren, the first time they appeared together in public since the end of the primary season.

But Sunday, after praising the Arizona senator as a “genuine American patriot,” the Democratic presidential hopeful got back to business — methodically tearing into McCain’s health care, tax and energy policies and criticizing his advisers.

Published: August 17 2008 18:51 | Last updated: August 17 2008 18:51

Barack Obama and John McCain enter their final week before the start of the US presidential nominating conventions amid intense speculation about who they plan to choose as their respective running mates – with Mr Obama almost certain to make his choice in the next few days.

Mr Obama, whose four-day Democratic convention starts next Monday in Denver, will this week attend election rallies and “town hall” meetings in the swing states of New Mexico, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia – any of which could provide a potential venue to announce his pick.

Obama aides deny any knowledge of the possible timing or venue of what is traditionally the most closely guarded secret in a presidential campaign. But veteran Democratic operatives say the choice is likely by Thursday. The Republican convention in Minneapolis starts in two weeks.

Abortion Leader Confirms that Democratic Platform is More Pro-Abortion than Ever
Also delighted that document now pushes "comprehensive sex education"

NEW YORK, August 15, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-Abortion leader Francis Kissling has published an article acknowledging that the new Democratic Party platform favors the cause of abortion and sex education, even more so than in previous years.

Kissling notes that the new platform "derives its moral authority from 'a woman's right to choose safe and legal abortion'", unlike older ones that spoke merely of "privacy."

She is also delighted that the platform makes no mention of making abortion "rare", and for the first time mentions "sex education", which is frequently used to promote contraception, abortion, "alternative sexual lifestyles" and extra-marital sex.

McCain Sweeps Saddleback Forum
August 17, 2008 10:00 AM EST

John McCain raised the applause of the Saddleback attendees many times over as compared to Barack Obama; some who paid up to $2,000 for seats at the event. What's it all about?

Recently Leith Anderson President of the National Association of Evangelicals said that 'mega-churches comprise only about one percent of the churched in America.' That means if it were not for the television coverage of the Saddleback Civil Forum the result would be nil.

Because evangelical churches that still use the bible for all reference to politics or any aspect of life, largely outnumber the few existing mega-churches, Warren's repeated references to those who 'demonize' the candidates or the political parties was directed to the majority in American Christianity. And although it looks like Warren is a healer of the breach to the main stream media, in fact he is on the fringe in the minds of millions of evangelicals and Catholics.

The head of the National Clergy Council says the man known as "America's pastor" threatens to water down the message of the gospel.

Faith and Action president Rob Schenck says there is a wide concern that California mega-church pastor and The Purpose Driven Life author Rick Warren's approach to the proclamation of the gospel is a "downgraded" version.

"Adapted to be perhaps less offensive or less exclusive, maybe more culturally popular or easy to embrace," Schenk contends. "When in fact, by doing that, Pastor Warren threatens to neutralize the very message of the gospel."

Yes, in just a few keystrokes Wheeler deftly dismembered the notion spun by the scribes of Obama that he is the fresh breeze blowing in our land and reveals, instead, that Barack is a typical uberliberal slim shady politician who simply blows.

The thing that floored my Lone Star friend was that his “pal” told him to eff off and ended his “friendship” with him. My buddy ain’t sweating it, though . . . he’s a Texan. We did, however, have a snicker (if the rabid gay crowd doesn’t mind me using the word snicker) over the amazing Bible-like allegiance the Obama groupies sport—which is ironic seeing that most liberals are atheists or agnostics who pride themselves on being skeptics.

Obama has set an elaborate roll-out to announce his decision that will begin with an early morning e-mail to supporters, perhaps as early as Tuesday, Zeleny and Adam Nagourney have been told.

McCain takes lead over Obama: poll

Wed Aug 20, 2008 4:19pm EDT

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.

The reversal follows a month of attacks by McCain, who has questioned Obama's experience, criticized his opposition to most new offshore oil drilling and mocked his overseas trip.

Why Obama's Red Mentor is News
By James Lewis
Barack Obama is still an enigma because a lot of his life has been carefully hidden, as National Review's David Freddoso points out in The Case Against Barack Obama. His campaign is hypersensitive because his life is filled with awkward facts and dubious associations. Obama has declared his personal history out of bounds and scrubbed it clean. The media are obediently censoring things we need to know. The most obvious example is Obama's adolescent mentor and father figure, Frank Marshall Davis.

Frank Davis was one angry black guy, at a time when the South was still segregated and there was plenty of reason for anger. Unlike most black people at the time, however -- like the extraordinary families who raised young Clarence Thomas and Condoleezza Rice in the Deep South -- Davis became a member of the Communist Party and glorified über-tyrant Jozef Stalin in his writing and poetry. This at a time when Stalin was ordering the deaths of tens of millions of people, and indeed enslaved millions of them in the Gulag, in forced communal farms, and in coercive factories all over the Soviet empire. Stalin was a slave-master and mass killer, as any informed person knew at that time. And Frank Davis must have known. There's a great difference between fighting racial injustice and pursuing racial vengeance, and Davis went for revenge against all of white America.

If you think Rev. Jeremiah Wright is over the top, Frank Davis was like that, just angrier. Senator Obama has long hung around with enraged radicals. Davis was apparently his first. Kids without parents often look desperately for father figures, who can have huge influence over their lives. Such, it appears, was Frank Marshall Davis for a young kid in Honolulu named Barry Obama. Obama's long line of rageful mentors and guides include Bill Ayers the Pentagon bomber, Jeremiah Wright the hate preacher, and Barack Obama Sr., a socialist-communist politician in Kenya, whose writings and letters still influenced Barack, Jr., even in his physical absence from his son's life. So we have a series of four radical mentors who shaped Obama's life. Those are just the ones we know about.

(CNSNews.com) – Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s role in the military invasion of the former Soviet state of Georgia could lead to him facing charges for war crimes, the Georgian ambassador to the United States said at a discussion at the conservative Heritage Foundation on Monday.

“We have to conduct a serious investigation in this regard,” said Ambassador Vasil Sikharulidze.

“What we would like to do is just to make all these places (in Georgia) very transparent, open for the free world, for the media, (and) international human rights activities,” he said.

By VANESSA GERA and MONIKA SCISLOWSKA

WARSAW, Poland (AP) - The United States and Poland signed a deal Wednesday to place a U.S. missile defense base just 115 miles from Russia - a move followed swiftly by a new warning from Moscow of a possible military response.

For many Poles - whose country has been a staunch U.S. ally in Iraq and Afghanistan - the accord represented what they believed would be a guarantee of safety for themselves in the face of a newly assertive Russia.

Negotiators sealed the deal last week against a backdrop of Russian military action in Georgia, a former Soviet republic turned U.S. ally, that has worried former Soviet satellites across eastern Europe. It prompted Moscow's sharpest rhetoric yet over the system, which it contends is aimed at Russia despite Washington's insistence the site is purely defensive.

Texas state legislators challenging 'sanctuary cities' for illegal immigrants
David Paulin
In Texas, two Republican legislators are taking up the “forgotten” issue in the presidential election – illegal immigration. Specifically, they're seeking to challenge municipalities that declare themselves “sanctuary cities” for illegal immigrants. Houston and Austin, the state capital, are among dozens of American cities that might be described as having “open borders” in defiance of America's immigration laws. Not surprisingly, such cities have become havens for illegal immigrants, most of whom arrive illegally from Mexico and Central America.

Writing in today's Austin-American Statesman, reporter Juan Castillo explains that the Republican lawmakers are taking up the issue of sanctuary cities with Attorney General Greg Abbott:

In a letter sent to Abbott this month, Rep. Frank Corte Jr. of San Antonio and Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston asked whether the Texas Legislature has the authority to deter local governments from adopting policies — or to invalidate existing policies — that hinder state enforcement of federal immigration laws.

The Perils of a Lower Drinking Age
By Steve Chapman

Life is full of surprises, and some 100 college presidents think they have stumbled on one. They think there is too much problem drinking on campus -- no surprise there -- and suggest we might solve the problem by changing the drinking age. They don't propose to raise it to 25. They want to lower it to 18.

The group behind the petition they signed, Choose Responsibility, says the current drinking age is a failure. It has "not resulted in significant constructive behavioral change among our students," the statement says, and in fact has spawned "a culture of dangerous, clandestine 'binge-drinking' -- often conducted off-campus."

It's true that in the old days, there was no college culture of clandestine, off-campus binge drinking. It was out in the open, right on the quad. Another difference back then: There was more of it.

Grapefruit, orange and apple juices can harm the body's ability to absorb certain medications and make the drugs less effective, said a Canadian study released Tuesday in the United States.

The research showed that these juices can decrease the effectiveness of certain drugs used to treat heart disease, cancer, organ-transplant rejection and infection, "potentially wiping out their beneficial effects," it said.

David Bailey, a professor of clinical pharmacology with the University of Western Ontario and leader of the study, was the first researcher to identify grapefruit juice's potential to increase the absorption of certain drugs two decades ago, possibly turning some doses toxic.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - California's attorney general is reviewing a request by former employees of IndyMac Bancorp Inc to investigate whether a New York senator triggered the bank's collapse by releasing confidential information.

At issue is a much-publicized letter that Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, sent in June to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) and Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) questioning the company's ability to survive.

The FDIC took control of IndyMac on July 11 after depositors withdrew more than $1.3 billion over 11 days. It was the third-largest bank failure in U.S. history. At the time, OTS Director John Reich blamed Schumer's letter for causing the run on the bank.

Investigators say fire — not explosives — brought down nearby skyscraper

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Federal investigators said Thursday they have solved a mystery of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks: the collapse of World Trade Center building 7, a source of long-running conspiracy theories.

The 47-story trapezoid-shaped building sat north of the World Trade Center towers, across Vesey Street in lower Manhattan in New York. On Sept. 11, it was set on fire by falling debris from the burning towers, but skeptics long have argued that fire and debris alone should not have brought down such a big steel-and-concrete structure.

Scientists with the National Institute of Standards and Technology say their three-year investigation of the collapse determined the demise of WTC 7 was actually the first time in the world a fire caused the total failure of a modern skyscraper.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee."

Biden, 65, has twice sought the White House, and is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator.

Across more than 30 years in the Senate, he has served at various times not only as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee but also as head of the Judiciary Committee, with its jurisdiction over anti-crime legislation, Supreme Court nominees and Constitutional issues.

"Obama's vote against funding our troops was an example of inexperience and poor judgment. The fact that his more experienced running mate made the right call highlights Obama's mistake."

"Whereas to date that vote hasn't gotten a lot of attention," the Republican official added, "now it will."

Analysis: Biden pick shows lack of confidence
By RON FOURNIER

The candidate of change went with the status quo.

In picking Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, Barack Obama sought to shore up his weakness _ inexperience in office and on foreign policy _ rather than underscore his strength as a new-generation candidate defying political conventions.

He picked a 35-year veteran of the Senate _ the ultimate insider _ rather than a candidate from outside Washington, such as Govs. Tim Kaine of Virginia or Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas; or from outside his party, such as Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska; or from outside the mostly white male club of vice presidential candidates. Hillary Rodham Clinton didn't even make his short list.

Time's Halperin: McCain's House Issue Harms Obama

ABC's George Stephanopoulos clearly had John McCain's houses on his mind Sunday, for during the latest installment of "This Week," the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's real estate holdings were discussed with every guest.

What Stephanopoulos may not have expected was Time's Mark Halperin claiming that "this is going to end up being one of the worst moments in the entire campaign for one of the candidates, but it's Barack Obama."

Adding delicious insult to injury, much to Democrat strategist Donna Brazile's dismay, Halperin saw the Obama campaign's attack on McCain not knowing how many houses he owns as opening the door for the Arizona senator to bring up the Illinois senator's connections to Tony Rezko, Reverend Wright, and William Ayers (video embedded right, partial transcript follows): ...

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has a long and established record of promoting homosexuality in contrast to the presumptive GOP candidate, Sen. John McCain., according to a new report card issued by a pro-family organization in California.

The report card, which has been posted online, was produced by the Campaign for Children and Families, which said it isn't taking a position on the political candidates but wanted people to see the "unrepudiated positions" of the candidates on issues including homosexual "marriage," teaching homosexuality to school children and adoption by homosexuals.

"Let the record show that John McCain and Barack Obama are polar opposites on partial-birth abortion, parental notification of abortion, marriage protection on the ballot, homosexual indoctrination of schoolchildren, gay adoptions, gun-owner rights, activist judges, and raising taxes," said Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families. "No one should base their vote on personality or mere feelings. Our carefully researched report card shows you exactly where Obama and McCain stand on issues of importance to voters, their families, and our nation's future."

Conventions speakers scheduled for Monday

By The Associated Press Sun Aug 24, 5:30 PM ET

A look at Monday's speakers for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver
___

MICHELLE OBAMA: The potential first lady addresses Democrats after a rocky summer as the target of conservative attacks. She was harshly criticized by Republicans for her comment that for the first time in her adult life she was proud of the United States, a comment her husband, Barack Obama, later said was merely an expression of her pride in high voter interest. The criticism of Michelle Obama led Obama earlier this year to call for opponents to "lay off my wife." In recent weeks, Michelle Obama has worked to soften her image, talking about raising two daughters in an interview in Ebony magazine and making a June appearance at an Ohio nursing home. Barack Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and Michelle Obama's older brother, Craig Robinson, also will have roles in the convention.

HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI: The nation's first female speaker of the House, Pelosi opens the convention. Pelosi has represented the San Francisco area in Congress since 1987. Since taking the gavel last year, Pelosi has steered a divided House through an economic stimulus package and opposition to many of President Bush's initiatives, including an override of Bush's veto of the 2008 farm bill. But so far she has failed to achieve a top goal since Democrats regained control of the House: halting U.S. combat missions in Iraq. The failure has led to criticism of Pelosi by liberal activists.

SEN. EDWARD M. KENNEDY: The Massachusetts senator is the subject of a five-minute recorded tribute. Diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor and recently completing radiation and chemotherapy, one of the nation's best-known Democrats has been keeping a low public profile.

Deception on infant protection bill haunts Obama

Barack Obama talkBarack Obama continues to be dogged by claims that he is misleading people about his past opposition to a bill in the Illinois legislature protecting babies who survived late-term abortions.

New audio reveals that while arguing against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act (BAIPA) in the Illinois Senate in 2002, state lawmaker Obama suggested two doctors tending to a baby who survived a botched abortion would be too much of a burden to the child's mother.

"And that essentially adding an additional doctor -- who then has to be called in an emergency situation to come in and make these assessments -- is really designed simply to burden the original decision of the woman and the physician to induce labor and perform an abortion," he stated.

Dems seek peace in party as Obama convention opens

DENVER (AP) - Democrats opened their national convention on Monday, seeking peace in the family as they pursue victory in the fall for Barack Obama and his historic quest for the White House.

An appearance by the ailing, aging Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts and a primetime speech by Obama's wife, Michelle, headlined the convention's first night.

In excerpts released in advance, the would-be first lady said she and her husband were raised with solid American values: "that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them."

Clinton Advisers Skipping Obama Speech

Updated 8:43 p.m.
By Matthew Mosk
A number of Sen. Hillary Clinton's top advisers will not be staying in Denver long enough to hear Barack Obama accept the nomination for president, according to sources familiar with their schedules.

Clinton will deliver her speech Tuesday night. She will hold a private meeting with her top financial supporters Wednesday at noon, and will thank her delegates at an event that afternoon. Former president Bill Clinton will speak that night. Several of Hillary Clinton's supporters are then planning to leave town -- among them, Terry McAuliffe, Clinton's campaign chairman. Another of Clinton's top New York fundraisers, Alan Patricof, did not make the trip to Denver.

Robert Zimmerman, a Clinton supporter who is trying now to navigate between the two camps, will be staying for Obama's speech. But he said in an interview that it would be unrealistic to expect there would not still be some tension between the two camps -- he noted that the same was true with supporters of Gary Hart and, to a lesser extent, Howard Dean.

Poll: More than half of Clinton backers still not sold on Obama

By Susan Page, USA TODAY
DENVER — Fewer than half of Hillary Rodham Clinton's supporters in the presidential primaries say they definitely will vote for Barack Obama in November, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, evidence of a formidable challenge facing Democrats as their national convention opens here today.

In the survey, taken Thursday through Saturday, 47% of Clinton supporters say they are solidly behind Obama, and 23% say they support him but may change their minds before the election.

Thirty percent say they will vote for Republican John McCain, someone else or no one at all.

Kennedy rallies Dems for Obama as convention opens

DENVER (AP) - Ailing and aging, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy summoned fellow Democrats to rally behind Barack Obama's pioneering quest for the White House Monday night, providing a poignant opening to a party convention in search of unity for the fall campaign.

"The work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on," Kennedy said in a strong voice, reprising the final line of a memorable 1980 speech that brought a different convention to its feet. The senator has been undergoing treatment for a malignant brain tumor.

Convention planners hoped a prime time address by Obama's wife, Michelle, would begin the work of casting the Illinois senator as a leader with classic American values.

Address seeks to counter Republican attacks on nominee as elitist

DENVER - Michelle Obama mixed the personal and the political Monday night in painting a picture of her husband, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, as a working-class advocate for the American dream who “will finally bring the change that we need.”

In an address on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, Obama countered Republican attempts to portray her husband, whom the Democrats will nominate for president on Wednesday night, as an exotic elitist out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans.

Obama stressed her and the senator’s middle-class backgrounds, saying the couple “were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life, that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do, that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them and even if you don’t agree with them.”

FBI looks into Denver reports of threat on Obama

DENVER - Federal authorities are looking into reports that a man arrested with rifles, ammunition and drugs in his truck may have made threats against Barack Obama, officials said Monday.

Two other men were arrested in the case.

"It's premature to say that it was a valid threat or that these folks have the ability to carry it out," said a U.S. government official familiar with the investigation. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

DENVER | Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. arrived at the Democratic National Convention on Monday amid rumblings over whether his pro-choice Catholicism would help or hurt the Democratic ticket.

An Irish-Catholic from a working-class upbringing, Mr. Biden won the nod as presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama's running mate in part because of his appeal to blue-collar Catholics, the same voters who swung during the primary for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

Although he represents Delaware in the Senate, Mr. Biden grew up in Pennsylvania, a must-win state for Democrats in November.

Carville also said the party needs to do a better job of communicating its message to the American people.

Bill Clinton: Obama Is the ‘Man for This Job’
by FOXNews.com
Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Bill Clinton, comparing his own upstart campaign to Barack Obama’s, declared before a packed Denver convention center Wednesday evening that the newly minted Democratic presidential nominee “is the man for this job.”

In a powerful and humbling speech that aimed to set aside bad blood between them during the Democratic presidential primaries, the former president essentially took a step back to make way for the Illinois senator, who just hours earlier had become the first black presidential nominee of a major party.

“I am here first to support Barack Obama,” he said. “Like Hillary, I want all of you who supported her to vote for Barack Obama in November.”

The Big Contradiction from the Denver Dems
by Michael Medved

Is the United States a land of limitless horizons, where hard work and big dreams enable people of humble background to scale dizzying heights of privilege and power?

Or is this a society of slammed doors and blocked opportunities, of a trapped middle class and shattered hope, where ordinary people can only provide a better life for their children with the help of an activist government and dramatic new policies?

The Denver Democrats insist that both descriptions are true, and they fail to acknowledge the obvious contradiction in the two primary messages of their convention.

(CNSNews.com) – The lead item on Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s Web site late Tuesday night praised the speech of his leading primary opponent, Hillary Clinton, and expressed confidence that the Democratic Party had healed.

But some Clinton-backers are not so sure and expressed concern that Obama is the wrong candidate to run at this time.

“Obama and the DNC view us as a bunch of hormonal, angry, and bitter feminists,” Anne Franklin, a co-founder of the Just Say No Deal, a coalition of Hillary Clinton supporters that oppose Obama, told CNSNews.com.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US economy outpaced expectations as surging exports fueled a second-quarter growth spurt at a 3.3 percent pace, according to data Thursday that analysts say makes recession less likel.

The Commerce Department revised upward last month's estimate of a 1.9 percent annualized pace of growth in gross domestic product (GDP).

The figure was much better than the average Wall Street estimate of 2.7 percent and showed a strong acceleration from the 0.9 percent rate of the first three months of the year.

Obama vows to reverse Republican legacy

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent 1 hour, 5 minutes ago

DENVER (Reuters) - Barack Obama launched a sharp assault on Republican presidential rival John McCain on Thursday with a promise to reverse the economic failures of the past eight years and restore America's global reputation.

The first black presidential +++nominee of a major U.S. party linked McCain directly to President George W. Bush and said their failed Republican policies were responsible for a faltering U.S. economy and a decline in U.S. standing in the world.

"We are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight," Obama told a flag-waving crowd of about 75,000 supporters in Denver's open-air football stadium as he accepted the Democratic nomination on the last night of the party convention.

DAYTON, Ohio - John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a maverick conservative with less than two years in office, as his vice presidential running mate Friday in a startling choice as the Republican National Convention drew near.

At a raucous rally in the swing state of Ohio, McCain introduced Palin as the political partner "who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us."

Palin, the first Republican woman tapped for national office, promised: "I'm going to take our campaign to every part of our country and our message of reform to every voter of every background in every political party, or no party at all."

New Orleans Residents Are Ordered to Flee Hurricane
By ADAM NOSSITER and SHAILA DEWAN

NEW ORLEANS — City officials ordered everyone to leave New Orleans beginning Sunday morning — the first mandatory evacuation since Hurricane Katrina flooded the city three years ago — as Hurricane Gustav grew into what the city’s mayor called “the storm of the century” on Saturday and moved toward the Louisiana coast.

Mayor C. Ray Nagin said Gustav was larger and more dangerous than Katrina, and pleaded with residents to get out or face enormous flooding and life-threatening winds.

“This is the mother of all storms, and I’m not sure we’ve seen anything like it,” he said at an evening news briefing. “This is the real deal, this is not a test. For everyone thinking they can ride this storm out, I have news for you: that will be one of the biggest mistakes you can make in your life.”

Gustav slams Cuba as Cat 4 storm; many evacuated

HAVANA (AP) - Gustav howled into Cuba's Isla de Juventud as a monstrous Category 4 hurricane on Saturday while both Cubans and Americans scrambled to flee the path of the fast-growing storm.

Forecasters said Gustav was just short of becoming a top-scale Category 5 hurricane as it powered its way toward mainland Cuba, where authorities were hurriedly evacuating more than 240,000 people from the nation's tobacco-rich western tip.

The hurricane was projected to plow into the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico at full force Sunday, and reach the U.S. coast as early as Monday afternoon. A hurricane watch was issued from Texas east to Florida, an area that includes New Orleans, which Hurricane Katrina devastated in 2005.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — President Bush is unlikely to make it to the Republican National Convention, and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may deliver his acceptance speech via satellite because of the historically huge hurricane threatening New Orleans, top officials said.

The RNC issued a release last Saturday night that anounced the formation of " working group of representatives from each of the states in Hurricane Gustav's path. The group will ensure that all affected delegates have information and assistance in real time.

"The Affected States Working Group is led by all five state party chairs from the affected area along with other delegation officials. The purpose of the group will be to regularly brief their delegates and convention planners, provide access to timely information and assistance, and give input on appropriate steps that can be taken from Minnesota."

Bush cancels speech at GOP convention in St. Paul

ST. PAUL, MINN. -- The marquee act for opening night just canceled, but some Republicans couldn't be happier.

All year, Republican strategists have worried about showcasing President Bush at the Republican National Convention when his standing with the public lies at a near-record low.

So, when Bush canceled his planned appearance at tonight's opening session to focus on preparations for Hurricane Gustav, there were more than a few sighs of relief.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A weakened Hurricane Gustav closed in on flood-prone coastal Louisiana Monday, bringing punishing wind and sheets of rain. But the storm veered away from New Orleans, where only a few holdouts and those that refused to abandon Bourbon Street remained.

Gusts snapped large branches from the majestic oak trees that form a canopy over St. Charles Avenue. Tens of thousands were without power in New Orleans and other low-lying parishes, but officials in said backup generators were keeping city drainage pumps in service.

But as a nervous nation watched to see if Gustav would deliver another Katrina-style hit on the partially rebuilt city, officials steadfastly insisted three years of planning and infrastructure upgrades had prepared them for whatever was to come.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Republicans staged a subdued opening to their storm-shadowed national convention on Monday, seeking aid for the Gulf Coast victims of Hurricane Gustav as well as support to send John McCain to the White House.

Personal news blended with the political when McCain's running mate announced that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter was pregnant. "We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said in a statement with her husband.

Outside the Xcel center, an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 anti-war protesters marched toward the convention, some of them smashing windows, puncturing tires and throwing bottles along the way. Police used pepper spray on the demonstrators and made at least five arrests.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Republicans revamped their convention plans for a second day, dropping former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani as keynote speaker Tuesday night while trying to determine President Bush's role in the political pageantry celebrating John McCain's candidacy for president.

In Giuliani's speaking slot were former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, one of McCain's rivals for the Republican nomination, and independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, the Democrats' vice presidential candidate in 2000 and now a McCain supporter. Republicans say the two will talk about McCain's life and their friendship with him.

Whether Bush will address delegates via satellite Tuesday night had not been decided, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and others had been expected to speak Monday night, but the McCain campaign and convention officials agreed to trim back the politics and focus instead on fundraising for victims of Hurricane Gustav.

Thompson Speech Hits Media on Palin, Obama on Abortion

Fred Thompson will forcefully defend the selection of Sarah Palin tonight in a speech Republicans are characterizing as "red meat." He will argue that the feeding frenzy over Palin's is the result of "panic" from the Democrat-friendly mainstream media.

"What a breath of fresh air Governor Sarah Palin is. She is from a small town, with small town values, but that's not good enough for those folks who are attacking her and her family. Let's be clear, the selection of Governor Palin has the other side and their friends in the media in a state of panic. She is a courageous, successful, reformer, who is not afraid to take on the establishment."

Thompson will also criticize Barack Obama's answer on abortion from his recent appearance at Rick Warren's Saddleback Church. Warren had asked: "Now, let’s deal with abortion. 40 million abortions since Roe v. Wade. you know, as a pastor I have to deal with this all of the time. All of the pain and all of the conflicts. I know this is a very complex issue. 40 million abortions. At what point does a baby get human rights in your view?"

Palin delivers star-turning performance at RNC
Tom Raum and Liz Sidoti - Associated Press - 9/4/2008 6:35:00 AMBookmark and Share

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Sarah Palin delivered. An embattled vice-presidential candidate, a novice on the national stage, the head of a family suffering its "ups and downs," the first-term Alaska governor rocked the GOP convention with a star-turning performance.

Wielding a stiletto and a smile, Palin belittled Democrat Barack Obama and praised her new boss, John McCain, jolting the crowd of GOP partisans.

"Don't you think we made the right choice for the next vice president of the United States!" McCain said, hinting the controversy surrounding his pick. "And what a beautiful family."

Larry [or as Curtis Sliwa says The Living Cadaver]King Live: Jesse Ventura, Actor D.L.Hughley Call Republicans 'Nazis'
By Warner Todd Huston (09/04/08)

It always comes down to this one, doesn't it? Leftists and fringe politicos calling Republicans "Nazis." Well, the "N" word was once again unleashed against John McCain's Republican Convention on September 2 during CNN's Larry King Live show. Actor D.L. Hughley and Independent former Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura both went for that shopworn epithet as King discussed the Convention.

Along with Hughley and Ventura, King had on former Clinton Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers who claimed that Republicans were saying with their convention theme that “only Republicans put their country first” ridiculously saying that Independents shouldn't vote for the GOP because they are insulted so much. "I don't understand why any independent or Democrat would consider voting for the McCain/Palin ticket," Myers partisanly intoned, "after being called all night that only Republicans put their country first."

Only a true sell out, though, would see it that way. Certainly the convention was cheerleading for its own members and saying that Republicans do, indeed, put their country first. But no one was saying that no one else does. Still, isn't this what conventions are for? To cheerlead and buck up the troops? And tell me, Dee Dee, why should anyone outside the Democrat Party go over to their side of the aisle after the Democrats so monotonously claim that only they care about people? Isn't that just as insulting?

Harry Reid Puts Lieberman On Notice After GOP Convention Speech
Lieberman Risks Payback from Senate Democrats
Thursday, September 04, 2008
By Andrew Miga, Associated Press

Washington - Senate Democrats hinted at payback Thursday for Sen. Joe Lieberman, who called Barack Obama an untested candidate beholden to Democratic interest groups in a prime-time Republican National Convention address.

Lieberman, a Democrat-turned-independent and a close friend of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, still caucuses with Democrats, which allows them to control the Senate with a 51-49 majority . A spokesman for Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., indicated Thursday that Lieberman may no longer be welcome.

"Lieberman went too far when he distorted Sen. Obama's record," said Reid spokesman Jim Manley. "From Reid's perspective, (Lieberman) has every right to give a partisan speech to whomever he wants. But he doesn't have the right to distort Sen. Obama's record like that. Sen. Reid was very disappointed in Lieberman's speech."

She says she’s a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association. Which explains why she is in favor of shotgun weddings.

John McCain got the endorsement of the gay Republican group known as the Log Cabin Republicans. The endorsement comes not because he supports gay rights, but because he was actually born in a log cabin.

Is Oprah Biased? Host Won't Interview Palin
Republican VP Nominee Sarah Palin Isn't Welcome on 'Oprah'
By EMILY FRIEDMAN
Sept. 5, 2008

She may have let Tom Cruise jump all over her couch, but Oprah Winfrey says that Sarah Palin can't even sit on it.

At least not until after the presidential election, that is.

Responding to media reports first publicized on Matt Drudge's "The Drudge Report" claiming there was turmoil at Winfrey's Harpo Studios about whether to book the GOP vice presidential nominee on the popular talk show, Winfrey's camp said today that while she has nothing against Palin, the veep hopeful won't appear on the show anytime soon.

"The item in today's 'Drudge Report' is categorically untrue," Winfrey said in a written statement provided to ABCNews.com. "There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show.

McCain Attracts Record TV Audience, Tops Obama, Palin (Update3)

By Andy Fixmer

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain attracted a record 38.9 million television viewers to his acceptance speech last night, surpassing Democratic rival Barack Obama and McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin.

The total exceeded the 38.4 million who watched Obama accept the Democratic nomination in Denver on Aug. 28, Nielsen Media Research said today in a statement. Palin drew 37.2 million on Sept. 3 after three days of intense media coverage.

The last night of the Republican gathering in St. Paul, Minnesota, was seen in 28.3 million homes, breaking the record of the 27.7 million who watched Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention. McCain's ratings are the highest for a political convention since Nielsen began collecting data in 1960.

The Unexamined Life
By Linda Chavez

The biggest story to emerge from the Republican National Convention was the media's effort to destroy Gov. Sarah Palin. Members of the Fourth Estate behaved more like a Democratic fifth column this week than they did like honest reporters. Palin's stunningly effective speech Wednesday night showed they will not easily take her down -- but their malicious attacks on Gov. Palin's family prove that they will stop at nothing to achieve their aim. Since when is the private life of a 17-year-old fair game in a political campaign? Apparently only when that 17-year-old's mom is a Republican candidate.

Make no mistake -- the press outed Bristol Palin's pregnancy. Reporters descended on Alaska following vile and false accusations on Internet blogs that Gov. Palin faked her own pregnancy and that her daughter was actually baby Trig's mother. These lies weren't only spread by left-wing fanatics but by journalists like Andrew Sullivan, whose blog appears on Atlantic.com, the online version of what was once one of the most respected magazines in the country. As the rumors got uglier, the McCain campaign decided they had no choice but to reveal to the world intimate details about Gov. Palin's daughter. And the media stood by their decision to muckrake by arguing for the public's right to know.

If you don't think this reflects media bias, contrast this insatiable prying into Bristol Palin's life with the press's lack of curiosity about the behavior of another 17-year-old -- one whose story would seem to have more relevance to this year's presidential election.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Barack Obama’s choice of Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., as his running mate for was lauded by many Democrats who were attracted to his Irish Catholic roots. Biden was described by both press and pundits as a “fighter” with a “working-class background” and foreign policy expertise who could attract voters to support the young Illinois senator.

If Obama is elected in November, Biden would be the first Catholic vice president.

Biden has long served in the Senate, accruing significant influence, particularly in his position as chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee. Although he voted in favor of the Iraq war, he has since been a sharp critic of the Bush administration. His foreign policy credentials were recently highlighted when he held discussions with leaders in Georgia during the conflict with Russia.

US Government takes over mortgage giants

The Bush administration's seizure of troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is potentially a $200 billion bet that it will help reverse a prolonged housing and credit crisis.

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER and ALAN ZIBEL

AP Business Writers
WASHINGTON —

The Bush administration's seizure of troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is potentially a $200 billion bet that it will help reverse a prolonged housing and credit crisis.

The historic move announced Sunday won support from both presidential campaigns, but private analysts worried that it may not be enough to stabilize the slumping housing market given the glut of vacant homes for sale, rising foreclosures, rising unemployment and weak consumer confidence.

Officials announced that both giant institutions were being placed in a government conservatorship, a move that could end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said allowing the companies to fail would have extracted a far higher price on consumers by driving up the cost of home loans and all other types of borrowing because the failures would "create great turmoil in our financial markets here at home and around the globe."

The three words -- immediately corrected -- were during an exchange with ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week," when he was trying to criticize the quiet smear campaign suggesting he is a Muslim.

But illustrating the difficulty of preventing false rumors about his faith from spreading, anti-Obama groups within one hour of the interview had sliced it out of context and were sending it around via email. They also were blogging about it.

McCain Now Winning Majority of Independents
Majority of independents now prefer him over Obama, 52% to 37%

by Lydia Saad

PRIN CETON, NJ -- John McCain's 6 percentage-point bounce in voter support spanning the Republican National Convention is largely explained by political independents shifting to him in fairly big numbers, from 40% pre-convention to 52% post-convention in Gallup Poll Daily tracking.

Remember when McCain was running with an almost empty campaign coffer;no entourage, Was going around solo and dragging along his luggage........ & the media was counting him out--- & then in NH a miracle turnaround!
Even though Barry has drawn big crowds (youth might register but frequently youth don't vote)..and Barry has televised the most ads...McCain is due for another major miracle.

‘Give the American People Their Energy Vote’
Tuesday, September 09, 2008
By Susan Jones, Senior Editor

(CNSNews.com) - With Congress back in session, House Republicans are continuing their push for an “all of the above” energy plan that includes expanded domestic oil drilling.

“We have three weeks left in this Congress, and it’s time for the Democrats who control it to do the right thing and give Americans the energy vote they deserve,” said House Republican leader John Boehner (Ohio).

The Republican-sponsored American Energy Act would increase production of American energy, promote conservation and efficiency, and encourage the use of alternative and renewable fuels. Under the GOP plan, a share of new drilling revenues would go directly into a renewable energy trust fund to accelerate the development of clean, renewable energy.

U.S. 'Dangerously Vulnerable' to Attacks: Reports

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 11:22

WASHINGTON — The United States remains "dangerously vulnerable" to chemical, biological and nuclear attacks seven years after the 9/11 attacks, a forthcoming independent study concludes.

And a House Democrats' report says the Bush administration has repeatedly missed opportunities to improve the nation's security.

The recent political rupture between Russia and the U.S. only makes matters worse, said former Rep. Lee Hamilton, D-Ind., who helped lead the 9/11 Commission and now chairs the independent group's latest study.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has gained huge support among white women since naming Sarah Palin as his running mate and now leads Democrat Barack Obama among those voters, according to a survey published on Tuesday.

Vitamin B12 May Protect Aging Brains

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 9:30 AM

Vitamin B12, a nutrient found in meat, fish and milk, may protect against brain volume loss in older people, according to a study published in the September 9, 2008, issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

For the study, 107 people between the ages of 61 and 87 underwent brain scans, memory testing and physical exams. Researchers also collected blood samples to check vitamin B12 levels. Brain scans and memory tests were also performed again five years later.

The study found that people who had higher vitamin B12 levels were six times less likely to experience brain shrinkage compared with those who had lower levels of the vitamin in their blood. None of the people in the study had vitamin B12 deficiency.

Stopping underage abortion in California
Charlie Butts - OneNewsNow - 9/9/2008 7:00:00 AMBookmark and Share

California's version of a parental notification law -- has been a bit overshadowed by another election measure that would overturn homosexual "marriage."

Prop. 4 is called "Sarah's Law." Sarah was 15 years old when she died four days after an abortion. Doctors said if the parents had known, the death may not have occurred. The proposal calls for parents or another relative to be notified 48 hours before an abortion. But Grace Delaney of Friends of Sarah notes it would also require Planned Parenthood to report underage abortions.

"Over 50 percent of the pregnant teens in California are actually impregnated by adult males, so these aren't girls who are getting pregnant by the kid next to them in algebra class," Delaney explains.

Rangel Owes U.S. Back Taxes, Lawyer Says

Representative Charles B. Rangel, chairman of the Congressional committee that writes the nation’s tax code, failed to pay an unspecified amount in federal taxes during the past five years on rental income from a villa he owns in the Dominican Republic, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

Mr. Rangel, a Harlem Democrat who is chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, has owned the beachfront house at the Punta Cana resort and club since 1988, but never declared the $75,000 in rental income he has earned either on his tax returns or on his Congressional financial disclosure form.

When Mr. Rangel’s legal advisers first acknowledged the unreported income last week, during interviews with reporters, they said his accountants had determined that he would probably owe back taxes to the city and New York State, but not the federal government.

N.Y. Gov.: GOP Injects Race in Obama Critiques

Tuesday, September 9, 2008 7:00

New York Gov. David Paterson said Tuesday that there were racial overtones in the Republican presidential ticket's criticism of Democrat Barack Obama's work as a community organizer.

"There are overtones of potential racial coding in the campaign," Paterson said at an event in New York City.

Paterson said that while Republican candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin haven't directly talked about race, it's strongly implied in comments Alaska Gov. Palin and others have made about Obama. McCain's camp said Paterson's claim is false.

Autumn Angst: Dems fret about Obama
By DAVID PAUL KUHN & BILL NICHOLS | 9/10/08 7:31 PM EST
Polls showing John McCain tied or even ahead of Barack Obama are stirring angst and second-guessing among some of the Democratic Party’s most experienced operatives, who worry that Obama squandered opportunities over the summer and may still be underestimating his challenges this fall.

“It’s more than an increased anxiety,” said Doug Schoen, who worked as one of Bill Clinton’s lead pollsters during his 1996 re-election and has worked for both Democrats and independents in recent years. “It’s a palpable frustration. Deep-seated unease in the sense that the message has gotten away from them.”

Joe Trippi, a consultant behind Howard Dean’s flash-in-the-pan presidential campaign in 2004 and John Edwards’s race in 2008, said the Obama campaign was slow to recognize how the selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate would change the dynamic of the race.

This is sweet — Barack Obama took his daughters to their first day of school. In a related story, John McCain took his daughters to pick up their first Social Security checks.

There is some good news for John McCain: According to the latest polls, McCain has started to open up a lead over Barack Obama. The USA Today poll has McCain ahead by 10 points; CBS news poll has the two tied; and the MSNBC poll says that Obama won the election last week.

Twin Towers Memories PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 September 2008
By Alan Caruba
In the years prior to 9/11, if you lived in New Jersey as I do and drove into New York there was a sweeping curve of roadway leading into the Lincoln Tunnel that provides a view across the Hudson River of downtowntwintowers Manhattan. One could see the Twin Towers from that vantage point and it always bespoke the financial power of the nation, the greatness of our economic system, and our role in the world.

Little wonder it was targeted, along with the Pentagon, for destruction by al Qaeda, the evil spawn of a seventh century religion whose name translates as “submission.”

Though preceded by a number of violent attacks that included U.S. embassies and other manifestations of the Islamic mandate to make war until the entire world accepts Islam, it was 9/11 that demonstrated the demonic forces it has let loose in the world.

There are more than a billion Muslims worldwide and most desire peace no less than the vast majority of mankind. Too many, however, are driven by their worst instincts, their sense of victimization, their romanticized view of Middle Eastern culture and history.

9/11 is a story of people

Thursday, September 11th 2008, 4:00 AM

This week, New York City high school students took part in a nationwide pilot program focusing on educating youths about the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

I, for one, need no film or textbook to recall the day. I can remember it with perfect clarity. Seven years ago Thursday terrorists attacked our nation and killed my father. I had just started middle school and as I waited for class to begin, one of my classmates ran into the room yelling that a plane had hit the twin towers.

My father had not been working at the World Trade Center for long, so it took a few moments to digest what was happening.

That morning, nothing seemed real because what I witnessed was too brutal, catastrophic and personal.

Some Would Rather Not Remember September 11th
Society piece by Aaron Goldstein

The events that occurred seven years ago that resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 innocent civilians were so calamitous and beyond our previous collective experience that we would be inhuman if we did not commemorate them. Some of these commemorations will take the form of public ceremonies mourning those who were lost be it at a house of worship or some other common meeting place. Others will mark the occasion more privately whether through a moment of silence at the workplace or by lighting a candle at home. However Americans choose to remember September 11th we will remember.

But there are those amongst us who do not approve of such public displays of lament. Most will have the good sense to refrain from making such views known out of respect for those who were lost and their families. Still others will not be able to resist the temptation of hearing the sound of their own voice and all the pretensions contained therein.

One such example of this is Garrison Keillor. Last year, I had the opportunity to hear the host of A Prairie Home Companion give a talk at Northeastern University on the subject of cheerfulness. Keillor’s talk took place a few days after the sixth anniversary of the September 11th attacks:

The Terrorists Are Losing

Seven years. Zero attacks. And almost zero credit.

President George W. Bush deserves better.

Seven years ago today, evil men killed 2,998 innocent people in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. They did so in service of an evil ideology. And they were directed by evil, small-souled creatures protected by a rogue state halfway across the world. The creatures called their murderous organization Al-Qaeda, which means "The Base" -- a name appropriate for an organization that serves man's base instincts, for base motives, to achieve base results.

Home of the brave?
Posted: September 11, 2008
1:00 am Eastern

My mind is reeling from having just read an account of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, as experienced by a New York City police officer and a FDNY fireman. I grieve as if it were yesterday when I stood transfixed with horror as images of jet-fuel-laden airliners plowed into the World Trade Center Towers in Lower Manhattan.

firehose door

Work had captured my focus that morning when my son called. His voice broke as he said, "Mom, turn on your television; a plane has just flown into the World Trade Center in New York City." As I reached for the remote to power up the set, he said in a deadly monotone, "My God, another plane has hit the other tower." Never have I heard my stoic child so emotionally drained – not when his father died, not in numerous family crises, but this day, he could not maintain that stoicism. He mourned with the rest of this nation; we mourned together at the loss of life and the blatant disregard for humanity by the terrorists who commandeered the planes and used them as giant bombs.

The third plane, flown into the Pentagon, was almost anti-climactic. Our senses were seared by the revulsion and awfulness of it all. And when the brave men and women in the final aircraft spiraled into the ground in Pennsylvania, numbness overcame horror. How could any living being achieve such callousness? We prayed; we cried; we ranted; and then, we prayed again. We lauded the brave men and women who died while trying to rescue the stricken in both towers. We watched in abject terror as some chose to plunge to the ground rather than face a certain, gruesome death inside the raging inferno.

Devastating Ike roars ashore in Galveston, Texas

By JUAN A. LOZANO and CHRIS DUNCAN, Associated Press Writers 22 minutes ago

GALVESTON, Texas - Massive Hurricane Ike ravaged southeast Texas early Saturday, battering the coast with driving rain and ferocious wind gusts as residents who decided too late they should have heeded calls to evacuate made futile calls for rescue.

Though it would be daybreak before the storm's toll was clear, already, the damage was extensive. Thousands of homes and government buildings had flooded, roads were washed out, 2.9 million people lost power and several fires burned unabated as crews could not reach them. But the biggest fear was that tens of thousands of people had defied orders to flee and would need to be rescued from submerged homes and neighborhoods.

"The unfortunate truth is we're going to have to go in ... and put our people in the tough situation to save people who did not choose wisely. We'll probably do the largest search and rescue operation that's ever been conducted in the state of Texas," said Andrew Barlow, spokesman for Gov. Rick Perry.

Randi Rhodes On Palin: She's Friends With Teenage Boy
By Kerry Picket (Bio | Archive)
September 14, 2008 - 02:26 ET

Liberal radio host Randi Rhodes made some terribly odd assumptions about GOP vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin on September 12(my emphasis added throughout):

She's the woman that shows up at the kids' birthday party and starts opining about everything from politics to lawn care. This is the woman that knows it all...will shout you down...will get revenge on you. That's who she is. She's friends with all the teenage boys. You have to say no when your kids go, 'Can we sleep over the Palin's?'...'No!, No!'

Brian Maloney of The Radio Equalizer initially found this terribly disturbing monologue of Rhodes. It is one thing for a liberal like Rhodes to critique conservative ideology. However, it is a whole other for a broadcaster to make such outlandish insinuations without any evidence whatsoever.

Help Obama's Half-Brother Move Out of His Hut

The biggest scandal of the election campaign is going unreported, for the most part, by the mainstream newspapers and TV shows. Imagine if John McCain or Sarah Palin had a half-brother who was living in a hut. Imagine if McCain, a multimillionaire, did nothing to help the guy. Imagine if McCain came to the convention and spoke incessantly about compassion and how he was inspired by the biblical mandate: we are our brothers' keepers! This would be the lead story on the evening news.

file..not Barry's families living in squalor..]

So why aren't the networks covering the fact that Barack Obama's half-brother George lives in a 6 by 10 foot hut in the slums of Kenya? It took a reporter for the Italian edition of Vanity Fair to locate George Obama. Obama noted that when he met his famous half-brother in 2006 “we spoke for just a few minutes. It was like meeting a complete stranger.” George Obama also told the magazine that “I live here on less than a dollar month,” and “if anyone says something about my surname, I say we are not related. I am ashamed.” Obama has done absolutely nothing to help his unfortunate half-brother.

Apparently alarmed that this report could hurt Obama, CNN dispatched one of its reporters to do cover-up work for the Obama campaign. This is a hopeless enterprise; anyone who sees pictures of George Obama's dwelling place on the web knows that they reveal the worst images of African poverty. Moreover, for all its propagandistic intent, the CNN report is unintentionally damaging to Obama. The reporter cannot hide the fact that George Obama comes from a "ramshackled slum." A neighbor tells CNN that Barack Obama really should connect with his half-brother and "see how he's living" and do what he can to "improve our way of life."

SHAMEFUL!!!

In 2004, obviously neither Senator Biden nor Senator Obama realized that their tax returns would be made available to the public. And neither of them “walked their talk”.

In 2004, the Bidens reported that they had $234,271 in adjusted gross income and made contributions of $380. Biden spokesman David Wade said the deductions on the tax forms ``are not the sum of their annual contributions to charity.'' The Bidens ``contribute to their church, and they also contribute to their favorite causes.'' Sure, maybe he tossed a quarter into the Salvation Army kettle. No one forgets to list their charitable contributions in their annual tax return. In 2004, the Obamas reported $207,647 in adjusted gross income and contributed $2500 to charity, an inch over 1% of their income.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Even when Rep. Charles Rangel tries to explain how he got into his tax mess, he mangles the facts so much it's easy to see how his accounts - and accountants - are muddled. And this from the lawmaker who has such a big say in determining who pays taxes and how much.

The chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee spent the past week reeling from a series of embarrassing revelations: He failed to report about $75,000 in rental income over two decades from a beach villa he owns in the Dominican Republic; he owes about $5,000 in back taxes to the government; he never knew he paid no interest on the villa's mortgage for more than a decade.

The New York Democrat is resisting calls from Republicans that he should lose his committee post, among the most coveted on Capitol Hill. The House ethics committee has begun inspecting Rangel's personal and professional life.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--A government official in Saudi Arabia cut out his daughter's tongue and burned her to death after learning she had become a follower of Jesus Christ. The girl came to know about Jesus Christ through the Internet and when her father learned about her decision, "a heated debate on religion" ensued, according to International Christian Concern (www.persecution.org), a Washington, D.C.-based human rights group. The man is in custody but news reports gave no indication as to his identity or when the crime occurred.

"Saudi Arabia is intolerant of Christianity and non-Muslim faiths," a press statement from International Christian Concern said. "Its education curriculum openly inculcates hatred against Christians and other non-Muslims through their textbooks and teachers. Saudi Arabian officials are using their huge oil wealth to export Wahabbism (the most intolerant version of Islam) to other countries including in the United States."

An Electoral College tidal wave has followed the surge of interest in the rejuvenated Republican presidential ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin, nearly erasing a once-daunting Democratic advantage and creating a race for the White House that is nearly dead-level even.

The latest Zogby Interactive polling in 11 key battleground states, and a further analysis of polling in other states, has resulted in the recalibration of the Zogby Electoral College Map, available at www.zogby.com.

In this latest Zogby calculation, Obama/Biden lead the race with a projected 234 Electoral College votes in 18 states and the District of Columbia, compared with 226 votes from 25 states for the McCain/Palin ticket. Another 78 Electoral College votes from seven states remain up for grabs, the latest Zogby analysis shows.

ChiTrib Debunks Media's 'McCain Will Die Soon' Anti-Palin Attack

By Noel Sheppard (Bio | Archive)
September 14, 2008 - 13:54 ET

As we move into week three of the Sarah Palin era, it has become clear that one of the media's attacks on her has involved convincing the public that John McCain -- due to age and illness -- will likely die while in office thereby putting her in charge of the White House.

As such, her qualifications must be greater than those of the normal vice presidential candidate.

The Chicago Tribune nicely debunked this scare tactic Sunday by -- heaven forbid -- actually addressing the facts involved in age and mortality in the year 2008 (emphasis added):

When Jessica Stollings learned on Facebook that John McCain had named Sarah Palin as his running mate, the 26-year-old from Bristol, Tenn., took the day off and picked up some campaign yard signs. Just like that, she went from "just a voter" to a McCain evangelist.

"He's a lot more visionary than I thought," said Stollings, a blooming evangelical activist for her generation who believes God has raised up Palin "for such a time as this."

Similar excitement built on the Virginia campus of conservative Christian Patrick Henry College, where busloads of students went on a road-trip to a McCain-Palin rally that drew thousands.

Former Democratic presidential campaign manager Donna Brazile was the first major Democratic figure to use it publicly, followed by Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn, in a speech on the House floor last Wednesday.

That cash figure is a fraction of the $110 million a Republican official says it has, which includes transfers of money McCain is no longer allowed to spend and money from state fundraising vehicles.

The disparity shows the Republicans' continued edge with the wealthy donors who can give in five-figure chunks.

Desperate HuffPo Blogger: 'Time to Dump Biden,' Replace with Hillary
By P.J. Gladnick (Bio | Archive)
September 15, 2008 - 10:22 ET

It's been less than a month since Barack Obama has picked Joe Biden to be his running mate and already there are calls from liberals, made desperate by Obama's plunge in the polls, to replace Biden with Hillary Clinton. One such plea comes from Huffington Post blogger Andy Ostroy, described as a "New York City-based political analyst," with a blog entry titled, "Why Replacing Biden With Hillary Makes Perfect Sense for Obama." Here is Ostroy's rationale for one of the biggest flip-flops in political history (emphasis mine):

Sen. Joe Biden's a perfectly appropriate vice presidential running-mate for Sen. Barack Obama. He's got 36 years of Senate experience, is a true intellect, a foreign policy expert, and a genuinely nice guy. But ever since Sen. John McCain added plucky Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to his ticket, the old adage nice guys finish last is beginning to take on new meaning in this year's presidential contest. It's time to dump Biden and replace him with Sen. Hillary Clinton. I don't care how it's done. Campaign chief David Axelrod can figure that out. And the sooner the better. Because I'm starting to think that if Team-Obama doesn't do something dramatic fast, it's gonna lose this election. There's a worrisome shift in momentum and in the polls. The Palin phenomenon, while truly unfathomable to Democrats, has energized McCain's campaign and allowed him like Houdini to snatch Obama's "change" theme right out from under him. It's time to snatch it back.

Obama Rally in DC Sparsely Attended

Buried all the way on page C4 of the Metro section the Washington Post reported yesterday on a rally Saturday. The rally was so sparsely attended the best the photographer could come up with was a picture of an Obama cardboard cutout in front of the Lincoln memorial with a lone supporter decked out with a crude pre-printed paper campaign sign on their back. Sunday tourists on the mall vastly out-numbered the Obama faithful.

Evidently, the Post is trying to downplay this less-than-rousing display enthusiasm for the "one." Ironically, the very same day, Ombudsmen Deborah Howell tackled complaints that the wildly successful McCain-Palin rally in Fairfax Virginia last Thursday was relegated to the Metro section, whereas an Obama rally in June (attended by less than half the number at the McCain event) was given front page

NY allows AIG to borrow from subsidiaries

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - American International Group Inc. will be allowed to use $20 billion of assets held by its subsidiaries to provide cash needed for the troubled insurer to stay in business, New York Gov. David Paterson said Monday.

The move comes as AIG continues to review its operations and discuss possible options with outside parties, reportedly including Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., to improve its business amid concern the world's largest insurer could need up to $40 billion to shore up its balance sheet.

Paterson asked New York state insurance regulators to essentially allow AIG to provide a bridge loan to itself. The governor has also asked the head of New York's insurance department to talk with Federal regulators about providing an additional bridge loan to AIG.

Late Night with Conan O'Brien

All the candidates are preparing for the debates — Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has agreed to help Joe Biden prepare for the debate by standing in and playing the role of Sarah Palin. Up until now, the only Sarah Palin role-playing has come at the request of Bill Clinton.

Speaking of Bill Clinton, yesterday in New York, Barack Obama had lunch with the former president. Afterwards, Clinton said, "It’s the first time the two of us have had a chance to sit down together and really [edit] about Hillary.”

The latest political commercial by Barack Obama attempts to portray John McCain as being unfamiliar with technology. McCain was outraged and responded with an e-mail — or as McCain calls it, "a computer letter from the future.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live!

John McCain and his wife Cindy stopped in for a visit with the ladies on “The View.” I don’t think it was the light, chatty experience the McCains were hoping for. At one point Whoopi Goldberg asked if she should worry about slavery making a comeback if he’s elected . . . he never did answer her.

After “The View,” McCain went and taped an episode of Rachael Wray’s show. He did a recipe that was one Sarah Palin’s — spaghetti and moose balls.

Sarah Palin had her first real interview. It was with ABC’s Charlie Gibson. The McCain people were happy with the interview. It went so well, they may even let her do another one.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

If you watched TV last weekend, you know that ABC’s Charlie Gibson did something John McCain has never done — interviewed Sarah Palin.

Then, earlier today, her son was on Maury Povich.

At one point, Gibson asked about the Bush Doctrine, and she didn’t know what it was. But to be fair, even Bush doesn’t know what it is.

Sarah Palin has her own action figure. And just today, a Joe Biden action figure was released. It talks . . . and talks . . . and talks . . .

Dow falls 500 points in worst day since 2001
Investors react to Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and Merrill Lynch sale

NEW YORK - A stunning makeover of the Wall Street landscape sent stocks falling precipitously Monday, with the Dow Jones industrials sliding 500 points in their worst slide since the September 2001 terrorist attacks. Investors recoiled after a shakeup of the financial industry that took out two storied names: Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Merrill Lynch & Co.

The pullback occurred across much of the globe as investors absorbed Lehman’s bankruptcy filing and what was essentially a forced sale of Merrill Lynch to Bank of America for $50 billion in stock. While those companies’ situations had reached some resolution, the market remained anxious about American International Group Inc., which is seeking funding to shore up its balance sheet. A faltering of the world’s largest insurance company likely would have implications far beyond that of Lehman, already the largest U.S. bankruptcy in terms of assets.

The swift developments that took place Sunday are the biggest yet in the 14-month-old credit crisis that stems from now toxic subprime mortgage debt. For the first part of Monday’s trading, the market was falling, but in a largely orderly fashion as investors seemed to draw some relief from the resolution of Lehman’s problems.

Lipsky: Global Economy Faces Difficult Test

The global economy faces its most difficult test in many years with economic growth slowing sharply even as high commodity prices put pressure on inflation, a senior International Monetary Fund official said last Tuesday.

IMF first deputy managing director John Lipsky said strains on financial markets remained significant more than a year after wider tensions from problems in U.S. mortgage markets surfaced, constraining growth and banks' balance sheets.

Commodity prices remained high and volatile, bringing risks of knock-on inflation effects, but recent sharp falls in oil prices should ease short-term inflation pressures in advanced economies.

TrooperGate Shows Palin's Reform Creds

Democrats be warned, “Troopergate” may backfire.

The latest revelation in the investigation on Sarah Palin’s decision to fire Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan reinforces her credentials as a reformer who strived to abide by her state budget and maintain dignity within the ranks of her law enforcement as Governor of Alaska.

Emails released by Palin’s lawyer in the evolving “Troopergate” investigation show Palin fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan because he routinely undermined her on budget issues, not because of his refusal to fire Palin’s ex brother-in-law Trooper Mike Wooten.

While Monegan’s firing was unrelated to Wooten, Palin did make her concerns about the trooper, who admitted to “tasering” his stepson, threatening the Governor’s family with violence and who has had a restraining order issued against him by his ex-wife, known.

Stocks Rise on Report of Government Aid for AIG

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

NEW YORK -- Stocks turned higher Tuesday after CNBC reported that the government is considering extending aid to troubled insurer American International Group Inc.

A partial recovery in shares of AIG and several other financial companies helped the sector show signs of life a day after leading Wall Street to its worst session in years. Investors also grew hopeful about a Federal Reserve interest rate cut.

Worries about AIG's well-being intensified Monday and early Tuesday after several ratings agencies downgraded the company. Lower ratings can add to the amount of money the already cash-strapped company has to set aside. Investors fear that a failure by the world's largest insurer would touch off a wave of financial turmoil.

14 Bishops and Counting Correct Senator Biden

By Tim Waggoner

WASHINGTON, September 15, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Catholic bishops across the nation have rebuked Senator Joe Biden for claiming, during a September 7 appearance on NBC's Meet the Press, that his support for abortion is in keeping with his Catholic faith.

To date at least 14 bishops have responded to Biden's erroneous statement about Catholic teaching and abortion.

Responding to a question from Meet the Press Moderator Tom Brokaw, Biden stated that he agreed with the Catholic Church that life begins at conception. He then continued, "I'm prepared as a matter of faith to accept that life begins at the moment of conception. But that is my judgment. For me to impose that judgment on everyone else who is equally and maybe even more devout than I am seems to me is inappropriate in a pluralistic society."

NEW YORK, September 16, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A new book on the shelves called "Being Catholic Now" has sparked the ire of some Catholics. Catholic League President Bill Donohue lambasted the book in an interview with LifeSiteNews.com today, noting that the offering compiled by Kerry Kennedy is filled with contributions from anti-Catholics, wayward Catholics and only a few authentic Catholics.

"The Kerry Kennedy book is rather amazing," Donohue told LifeSiteNews.com. "It's called 'Being Catholic Now,' yet many people in the book reject the Church's teaching on almost everything. Some of them are outright haters of the Catholic Church, and they admit that. Many of them have fallen away, and they admit that. So you have to wonder about the title."

Contributions from anti-Catholics Bill Maher and James Carroll are in the book, alongside dissidents such as Nancy Pelosi, Susan Sarandon and Sister Joan Chittister. However, there are also chapters by retired Washington Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, Catholic philanthropist Tom Monaghan and author and columnist Peggy Noonan.

U.S. to Take Over AIG in $85 Billion Bailout;
Central Banks Inject Cash as Credit Dries Up

The U.S. government seized control of American International Group Inc. -- one of the world's biggest insurers -- in an $85 billion deal that signaled the intensity of its concerns about the danger a collapse could pose to the financial system.

The step marks a dramatic turnabout for the federal government, which had been strongly resisting overtures from AIG for an emergency loan or some intervention that would prevent the insurer from falling into bankruptcy. Just last weekend, the government essentially pulled the plug on Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., allowing the big investment bank to go under instead of giving it financial support. This time, the government decided AIG truly was too big to fail.

The U.S. negotiators drove a hard bargain. Under terms hammered out Tuesday night, the Fed will lend up to $85 billion to AIG, and the U.S. government will effectively get a 79.9% equity stake in the insurer in the form of warrants called equity participation notes. The two-year loan will carry an interest rate of Libor plus 8.5 percentage points. (Libor, the London interbank offered rate, is a common short-term lending benchmark.)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hackers broke into the Yahoo! e-mail account that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin used for official business as Alaska's governor, revealing as evidence a few inconsequential personal messages she has received since John McCain selected her as his running mate.

"This is a shocking invasion of the governor's privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these e-mails will destroy them," the McCain campaign said in a statement.

The Secret Service contacted The Associated Press on Wednesday and asked for copies of the leaked e-mails, which circulated widely on the Internet. The AP did not comply.

A SALUTE TO OUR U.S. CONSTITUTION
Wednesday, 17 September 2008
By Chuck Baldwin

Under divine Providence, it has been allegiance to the Constitution that has preserved our liberties and protected our very way of life. Most of the problems, failings, and frustrations that plague our nation today are due to the propensity of our civil magistrates to ignore or blatantly abuse constitutional government. Accordingly, fidelity to the Constitution would likely repair most of the damage done by this neglect.

It is the responsibility of a free people to jealously guard the principles upon which their liberties are predicated. For citizens of these United States, the principles that duly protect our liberties are contained in the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence. Therefore, it is incumbent upon every American to studiously familiarize himself with these documents.

Furthermore, it is the duty of every American to stubbornly hold their elected representative, at every level of government, accountable to his or her oath to the Constitution. The U.S. Constitution is the contract that every civil magistrate makes with "We the People." Failure of an elected representative to fulfill that oath to the Constitution should be met with swift and certain rejection by the people at the polls. Nothing else should matter. Republican or Democrat, man or woman, black or white, believer or unbeliever: it is the responsibility of every civil magistrate to submit to the restrictions and instructions of the Constitution.

Shock Poll: Jews Now Favor McCain in New York, 54-32
John Podhoretz - 09.17.2008 - 6:17 PM

The Siena poll, one of the two key polls of New York state voters, has come out with its monthly snapshot of the presidential race in the Empire State. And it’s stunning. It is remarkable, though not eye-opening, that John McCain is now only 5 points behind Barack Obama, 46-41 – not shocking because polls have narrowed to similar margins in New Jersey. (It should be noted, however, that according to a Rasmussen poll released yesterday, Obama is leading in New York by 55-42.)

No, the shocking detail has to do with a wild, 35-point swing toward McCain among Jewish voters. Obama led among them by a margin of 50-37 in August. This month, McCain is actually leading Obama by a margin of 54 percent to 32 percent.

Siena polled 626 likely voters this month. Of those, according to Steve Greenberg, the spokesman for the Siena poll, 77 were Jews, or 12 percent of the sample. That is Siena’s best guess of the size of the Jewish vote in New York state in November. With a sample size that small, the margin of error for the Jewish voter sample is plus-or-minus 11 point.

A new ad from the Obama campaign ridicules John McCain for not using the Internet, perhaps not realizing that McCain's war injuries leave him unable to use a keyboard. This ad comes on the heels of Obama's "lipstick on a pig" controversy, which is still fueling late night talk shows. The lipstick controversy came on the heels of another Obama gaffe, when he artlessly referred to "my Muslim faith."

McCain's Big Invisible Advantage
By Thomas Lifson
John McCain stands to benefit as a little-noted but significant change takes place in the way the American public forms its political preferences. Quite simply put, every four years, sometime between Labor Day and the end of the World Series, most of the American public starts paying attention to politics.

Politicians, activists, political junkies and journalists hate to admit it, but most people pay very little attention to politics, except for a month or so every four years. The political bickering among the cognoscenti is of no concern to the vast bulk of American humanity. What little they do know about politics is the product of headlines, photographs, TV news clips half-heard, and other fragmentary data, amounting to nothing more than background noise in their lives.

The overwhelmingly liberal media exercise their power in both blatant and subtle ways to convey a warm and fuzzy impression of Democrats. Photo editors at daily newspapers play a key role, selecting scowling pictures of Republicans and smiling pictures of Democrats, for instance. All of the television news outlets except Fox look for sound bites and visuals to reinforce a positive impression of Democrats whenever possible, and portray Republicans as mean, bigoted, white, male, awkward and stupid.

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

President Bush is back from the hospital. He had a growth removed from his head. It wasn’t a health issue — the growth just wanted to distance itself from him.

One of McCain’s advisers implied that John McCain helped invent the BlackBerry. He should have gone with something more believable like he helped invent fire or something.

Barack Obama had a big night — Barbra Streisand threw a big fundraiser for the Democrats. The dinner cost $28 grand a plate. For an extra grand you were allowed to leave before she started singing.

Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The OJ Simpson trial started yesterday. It was exciting for me, because I was worried that my kids would not get to experience their own OJ trial.

This time he’s being charged with kidnapping and robbery involving some guys who tried to sell some memorabilia he owned. I think it was his collection of Battlestar Galactica figurines.

This will distract us from the terrible news that we will all be jobless and homeless very soon. The Dow fell 504 points yesterday . . . I have no idea what that means, but apparently it’s really bad.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

The stock market crashed yesterday, though analysts are calling it a correction. Once again, I don’t think President Bush gets it. Today, he was asked if customers should be concerned about all these bank closings. He said it doesn’t matter — if the bank is closed, just use the ATM.

The election is getting near. I don’t think Sarah Palin knows anything about the economy either. She was asked today what people should do in a bear market. She said, “Well, you should shoot it and skin it.”

In an interview with Charles Gibson, Palin didn’t know what the Bush Doctrine was. To be fair, a month ago she didn’t know who John McCain was either.

In her blog, Lindsay Lohan is speaking out against Sarah Palin, though most people are reserving judgment until they hear from Nicole Richie and Jessica Simpson

U.S. Stocks Rally Most in Six Years on Plan to Shore Up Banks

By Elizabeth Stanton
More Photos/Details

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rallied the most in six years on prospects the government will formulate a ``permanent'' plan to shore up financial markets, while regulators and pension funds took steps to curb bets against banks and brokerages.

Traders erupted into cheers on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange as the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 617 points from its low of the day after Senator Charles Schumer proposed a new agency to pump capital into financial companies. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index climbed 4.3 percent as 68 companies in the gauge rose more than 10 percent.

Wachovia Corp. soared 59 percent, Citigroup Inc. added 19 percent and Bank of America Corp. jumped 12 percent, sending the KBW Bank Index to its biggest gain since July. Morgan Stanley erased a 46 percent tumble and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. recovered most of a 25 percent slide after the nation's three largest pension funds stopped loaning shares of the brokerages to investors betting on their declines.

California home sales surge as prices plummet
Sep 18 07:19 PM US/Eastern
By JACOB ADELMAN

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Home sales in California surged 13.6 percent in August as a flood of foreclosures drove down prices.

The figures released Thursday by MDA DataQuick showed 37,988 new and preowned homes were sold statewide last month, up 13.6 percent from August 2007 but down 3.8 percent from July.

The firm said 46.9 percent of all homes sold last month were foreclosed properties.

That helped send the statewide median home price plunging 35.3 percent to $301,000 during the year ended in August.

Never Sell America Short [Barry, Michelle & your socialist bomb throwing crew]

We can fix this. If nothing else, that’s the message I hope readers take away from this column. Of course, the “this” is the run on the world banking system. Stock markets have plunged globally, gold prices have shot up, and U.S. Treasury-bill rates have plummeted to 10 basis points, the lowest since the 1950s.

We’re witnessing a desperate flight to safety by investors. Folks are running away from financial assets and financial institutions simply because confidence has disappeared.

This week, Treasury secretary Hank Paulson said “no” to a government bailout of Lehman. Paulson and Ben Bernanke then took over AIG with an $85 billion bailout, with the Treasury issuing roughly $100 billion in new T-bills so the Fed has the cash to resuscitate AIG.

I've never been a Barney Frank fan, but the gay liberal seems to fully grasp the situation & dems & GOPers should seek his advice & support.he is a close associate of our treasury secretary.

I noticed the rotund Charlie Rangel was not at the meeting, maybe he was resting at 1 of his 4 Harlem apartments, where by his selfishness blocks out needy poor & middle class NYers.

Then there's my senator Chucky Cheese trying to desperately get into last nights closing shots w/ the bipartisan officials....as they say the most dangerous place in America is to be caught between Chuckie & a tv camera.BB1

How to Cure This Sick System
Steve Forbes 09.11.08, 6:00 PM ET
Forbes Magazine dated October 06, 2008

Not even during the Great Depression did we witness what is now unfolding--a sizable number of big financial institutions going under. What enabled their taking on so much debt and so many questionable assets was, primarily, the easy-money policy of the Federal Reserve. Chairmen Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke created massive amounts of excess liquidity. If the dollar had been kept stable relative to gold, as it was between the end of WWII and the late 1960s, the scale of the bingeing in recent years would have been impossible.

The first prescription for a cure is to formally strengthen the dollar and announce it publicly. A year ago August the price of gold was more than $650 per ounce. In late 2003 it had breached $400. The Fed should declare that its goal for gold is around $500 to $550. That would stabilize the buck--and stability is essential if animal spirits and risk taking are to revive.

Also of immediate urgency is for regulators to suspend any mark-to-market rules for long-term assets. Short-term assets should not be given arbitrary values unless there are actual losses. The mark-to-market mania of regulators and accountants is utterly destructive. It is like fighting a fire with gasoline.

Congress Promises Quick Action on Bailout Package
‘Detox for banks,’ analyst says
Friday, September 19, 2008
By Jeannine Aversa and Julie Hirschfeld Davis, Associated Press

Washington (AP) - Congress promised quick action on a plan to buy up toxic assets, such as bad mortgages, held by troubled banks and other institutions, hoping to lift the nation out of its worst financial crisis in decades.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke are crafting a plan, which they plan to soon deliver to lawmakers, after concluding they need broader powers to combat fallout from a housing and credit market meltdown that has sent shock waves through Wall Street and around the globe.

Congressional leaders said they expected to get the plan Friday and act on it before Congress recesses for the election.
