LOS ANGELES (AP) - Home sales in California surged 13.6 percent in August as a flood of foreclosures drove down prices.



The figures released Thursday by MDA DataQuick showed 37,988 new and preowned homes were sold statewide last month, up 13.6 percent from August 2007 but down 3.8 percent from July.

The firm said 46.9 percent of all homes sold last month were foreclosed properties.

That helped send the statewide median home price plunging 35.3 percent to $301,000 during the year ended in August.

Not even during the Great Depression did we witness what is now unfolding--a sizable number of big financial institutions going under. What enabled their taking on so much debt and so many questionable assets was, primarily, the easy-money policy of the Federal Reserve. Chairmen Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke created massive amounts of excess liquidity. If the dollar had been kept stable relative to gold, as it was between the end of WWII and the late 1960s, the scale of the bingeing in recent years would have been impossible.

The first prescription for a cure is to formally strengthen the dollar and announce it publicly. A year ago August the price of gold was more than $650 per ounce. In late 2003 it had breached $400. The Fed should declare that its goal for gold is around $500 to $550. That would stabilize the buck--and stability is essential if animal spirits and risk taking are to revive.

Also of immediate urgency is for regulators to suspend any mark-to-market rules for long-term assets. Short-term assets should not be given arbitrary values unless there are actual losses. The mark-to-market mania of regulators and accountants is utterly destructive. It is like fighting a fire with gasoline.

The Democratic-controlled Congress said they are going to adjourn for the rest of the year. They said regarding the financial crisis, no one knows what to do. Well, that’s a ringing endorsement to re-elect them — “You’re on your own! We’re leaving.”

Obama rebuffed his GOP rival, saying the next president needs to "deal with more than one thing at once."

I don't get it..I am on disabilty (likely let's pray non-permanent)...Divorced & just today put $300, into my usual mo. savings...give about 20%/my regular to charity..& in a bad market met all my monthly stock goals..as a matter of fact to cover the covered already all of 08'whole yr.So for rest of Sept..then Oct, Nov.& Dec..am studying stocks..... that if I buy 1000 shares I can come out w/ a 2-5K profit.



None of my relatives, they almost all own homes/ome paid off are behind in any payments...

Yet those same networks tried to also argue that Obama had really won the debate, superficially suggesting that McCain’s “disdainful” body language poorly contrasted with the “warm” and “deferential” Obama.

On style, “Barack Obama did a much better job,” ABC contributor Matthew Dowd asserted. NBC’s Chuck Todd insisted that “McCain barely could look at Obama, was disdainful at times, almost annoyed that he was having to share the same stage....Here was Obama being deferential, and here is McCain being disdainful.”

Friday night on CNN, a snap poll of 524 adults who watched the debate suggested more thought Obama had won, by a 51% to 38% margin. It looks like W's "strategery" fails once again...Please remember it was Pelosi, Reid, & the dems that brought 3 pages to 160...in Nov. voter anger might backlash against them & MCcain might get some new congress people...not a dem house landslide that many thought possible at the start 0f 2008.

Rudy tried this after 9/11, when we didn't mind a replay....I think the bill might not be approved & Mike has done great work..& following in Rudy's footprints many thought crime would rebound, we'd get attacked again & tourism & businesses would drop...w/ some companies moving to NJ...but, Mike improved the schools, crime went to new lows & taxes were lowered..yes, he took a way transfat & people smoking in bars & restaurants...but he's popular!

I would love to see our NYD Commish, Ray Kelly if Mike doesn't get a 3rd run, Ray is an ex-marine, was a leader in the Customs Dept., and ran the fed DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY.

The alternative would likely be dem Council Head Christine Quinn, a militant lesbo.

Bloomy would be a great economic adviser or cabinet member in a likely McCain WH, but Obama likes Mike alot.He's a self made man, brilliant in economics and management....

A "dangerous side effect" of America's failure to control the Southwest border and the nation's tolerance for high levels of illegal immigration has resulted in the spread of violent transnational gangs across the United States, including Maryland, Virginia and Washington, a report says.



A report written for the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) says the gangs represent a "significant menace to the public," with about 80 percent of the members involved in serious crimes in addition to immigration violations and another 40 percent having committed violent crimes.

"The recent emergence and spread of several Hispanic street gangs, most notably MS-13 and 18th Street, has attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies and political leaders nationwide," said Jessica M. Vaughan, an author of the report, which was made public Tuesday. "Many gangs are made up of small-time troublemakers, but others have a reputation for grisly violence.

Look at history. The Gore-Lieberman ticket gained about 6 points in the final two weeks of the 2000 campaign. Ford-Dole came back more than 20 points in less than two months in the fall of 1976. Both tickets were from the party holding the White House, and both were running against inexperienced, and arguably risky, opponents.

What's more, this year's race has already--twice--moved by more than 6 points over a span of only a few weeks. The race went from McCain up 2 (these are the Real Clear Politics averages) on September 14 to Obama plus 6 on October 2, less than three weeks later. In the four weeks before that, the race had moved from Obama plus 5 on August 12 to McCain plus 2 on September 12.

Three to four weeks were wasted during which Sarah Palin could have connected with the conservative voting base and boosted the McCain campaign. Now, it appears that McCain will finally turn her loose and “let Sarah be Sarah.”

Early returns mentioned by Hugh Hewitt in his post debate coverage last night indicated that many members of, even the mainstream media, have given the vice presidential debate to Sarah Palin. I tend to agree, but perhaps I was a victim of my own expectations with the result that I didn’t see her turning in an “all-pro” performance. Still, I think she did exactly what she needed to do, and that was enough. She showed that she knew what she was doing and could hold her own against that consummate politician, Joe Biden, who will say anything to get what he wants. He hangs out at the Home Depot? Puleeze; you expect me to take that seriously? Or, were you speaking to the lowest common denominator in American intelligence?

When I suggested that in the absence of Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin was the best choice for VP, I expected that the McCain Campaign was thinking on all cylinders. I was wrong. After a good introduction and an excellent convention speech the Alaska governor has been buried in attempts to court such media figures as Katie Couric. McCain may have been responsible for this, as he has never been enamored of the greatest weapon he possesses; talk radio. Thus, three to four weeks were wasted during which Sarah Palin could have connected with the conservative voting base and other audience members, and boosted his campaign. "Good Will" listed his employer as "Loving" and his occupation as "You," while supplying as his address 1015 Norwood Park Boulevard, which is shared by the Austin nonprofit Goodwill Industries. Suzanha Burmeister, marketing director for Goodwill, said the group had "no clue" who the donor was. She added, however, that the group had received five puzzling thank-you letters from the Obama campaign this year, prompting it to send the campaign an e-mail in September pointing out the apparent fraudulent use of its name.

"Doodad Pro" listed no occupation or employer; the contributor's listed address is shared by Lloyd and Lynn's Liquor Store in Nunda. "I have never heard of such an individual," says Diane Beardsley, who works at the store and is the mother of one of the owners. "Nobody at this store has that much money to contribute." (She added that a Doodad's Boutique, located next door, had closed a year ago, before the donations were made.)

Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said the campaign has no idea who the individuals are and has returned all the donations, using the credit-card numbers they gave to the campaign. (In a similar case earlier this year, the campaign returned $33,000 to two Palestinian brothers in the Gaza Strip who had bought T shirts in bulk from the campaign's online store. They had listed their address as "Ga.," which the campaign took to mean Georgia rather than Gaza.) Before the Robinson controversy, other Episcopalians, from South Carolina to Southern California, had disassociated from the Episcopal Church and put themselves under the authority of conservative Anglican bishops who serve where the church is flourishing -- often in sub-Saharan Africa, where a majority of Anglicans live.

It is not the secessionists such as Duncan who are, as critics charge, obsessed with homosexuality. The Episcopal Church's leadership is latitudinarian -- tolerant to the point of incoherence, Duncan and kindred spirits think -- about clergy who deviate from traditional church teachings concerning such core doctrines as the divinity of Christ, the authority of scripture and the path to salvation. But the national church insists on the ordination of openly gay clergy and on blessing same-sex unions.

Twice a week I go to this fantastic accupuncturist in Brooklyn for gout and other things/accupuncture has been given favorable reviews by science & covered by many insurance companies(remember Nixon during his China trip was amazed to observe a brain operation while pt. remained wake..pain,etc. controlled by accupuncture needles)............ she also uses magnets on spots (small magnet with round band aid like material on my knees before I depart/stays on for days)...often I feel they may help...but know that THE GREAT PHYSICIAN is MY healer.

As a person of color I am happy that a glass ceiling has been shattered; & that Revs. Picket Sign & Bull Horn & Farrakan can go into the sunset w/ their cries of a racist America.

Right up until I returned home for the night a young black youth having seen my hat & button engaged in a meaningful dialogue, which I will tell @ some point this week..but have another busy wed. in Manhattan..the kids that recently asked me questions have been so respectful.I left that kid w/ some hope & as he works in a nearby store..I'll bring him some info on college,JOB CORPS where those a federal training program where those 24 and under, go to camp to learn plumbing, computers,beauticians, electricians...for details : ~~~FED> TRAINING PROGRAM FOR 24 & UNDER: Highly recommended by former youth specialist BB1~~~,if they need to finish a GED...or have a drug or alcohol problem.

To see my career w/ tough NY & US kids, drug addicts & those w/out hope SEE MY MINI BIO on post # 1....but, believe it or not Obama encouraged me to get involved..& I'll report how so in future posts & as I decide in what areas I may go lend a hand.
