Kath, I am excited to see someone else knows of Dark Victory and likes it! I have to admit, though, that I generally laugh through the final 5-10 minutes, and I know that is supposed to be so dramatic but I really love the way Julie is clinging to the walls and able to maneuver around so well and how everything happens so fast. I think that is very unrealistic. I'm sure laughter is not the emotion the makers of the film were going for, though! I think we are supposed to be sobbing. Oh, well. It is a terrific movie, anyway. I just love Ronald Reagan's character in there, too - the lovable but always somewhat intoxicated Alec - or is it Alex? Either way, I really do love that movie and it has some great actors - even Humphrey Bogart! And I like the horses, the dogs, and I really do like Julie's best friend, too. I have not seen that movie for a long time, and now I want to watch it!

Amy, I admit I sob through the last 10 minutes. If you get a chance you ought to catch "the old maid" with Bette Davis. I sob through the last 10 of that too.

Anything with Cary Grant. :) Bringing up Baby is my favorite - but Cary Grant makes anything brilliant.

I was pretty sure it was originally filmed in B&W and then later color was added. I could have sworn I have seen it in B&W.

Captains Courageous with Spencer Tracy, Freddie Bartholomew, Mickey Rooney, and even Lionel Barrymore.

Also, Frankenstein was a great old movie.

That would be "Young Frankenstein". Son of Frankenstein was filmed in 1939 and starred Boris Karloff as the monster.

I checked on African Queen (on Wikipedia, which I know is not gospel truth, but...) and apparently it was filmed using a Technicolor camera, so I do think it was originally in color. Not trying to argue about it being a great movie, though! (I just get where I want to look up stuff like that or it will drive me crazy, you know?)

Also, I have seen one Akira Kurosawa (spelling?) movie - The Bodyguard. (Completely different from the Whitney Houston movie!)

Not entirely forgotten--I mentioned Seven Samurai. The one I didn't mention, since I couldn't remember whether it's B&W or not is Kurosawa's interpretation of Macbeth, Throne of Blood. I love that movie.

Not including silent films, my favorite is probably "The Best Years Of Our Lives" from 1946.

There are too many old films I like to mention here, but that one is at or near the top of my list.

I am also a fan of the old Universal horror movies (i.e. Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.). Those films were not graphic, but suspenseful and good always triumphed over evil in the end. I loved them as a kid, and still enjoy them whenever they come on.

I guess you could include "Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein" on the list as well. One of my all time favorites.
