bob97 -> Numbers of posts declining (11/9/2007 11:45:20 AM)

The administers really needs to address the problem of numbers of posts. I can see the need of deleting old threads but the number of post for anyone should be accumulative.

It’s not the count that counts but the fact that if one does not post excessively they can disappear off the board.

I continue to say I post quite a bit but my count is less today then it was three weeks ago.

Maybe I’m the only one that sees this to be a problem.

Bob

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/9/2007 11:47:01 AM)

I don't see it as a problem because I hardly ever pay attention to the post numbers anyway...since they really don't mean anything.

Ellie-Mae -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/9/2007 11:51:44 AM)

By hubby only has a couple dozen posts. He would have to refrain from posting for an entire year or more to have all of his posts disappear. Even if that were to happen, he would still have his membership here. See? you won't disappear completely unless you wanted to. You don't have to worry.[:)]

bob97 -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/9/2007 7:25:13 PM)

Ellie,

No I'm afraid that if your hubby doesn't post very often and what he does post on becomes inactive, he would end up with zero post.

Peculiar,

If numbers of post are meaningless then we should just give up listing them all together. Why were such titles as Super Member, Senior Member or New Member used to begin with?

Bob

Ellie-Mae -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/9/2007 7:27:18 PM)

So if the worst thing that can happen is that he has a big fat 0 under his handle, what's the problem?

zoebob -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/9/2007 7:27:58 PM)

Yes, Ellie's husband would eventually have zero posts but only if all his threads went a year without being posted in. Threads are purged when they have not been posted in for 1 year.

bob97 -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/12/2007 9:56:52 AM)

Just for the record, I lost 100 posts this week. Thats a net loss by the way.

That means a year ago you posted 100 more times then you did this year.

Just wanted to add... in the last 30 days we've had over 74,000 posts added to the board.

There is just no way we can keep all the posts ever added to the board and expect it to load pages faster than a snail's pace.

So we've developed a nightly purge to help keep things loading smoothly.

Now, it may be possible that you could find a forum somewhere on the web that didn't purge old messages.

I'd be willing to bet that they aren't nearly as large as we are OR have the awesome feature set that we have.

So the purge is just the price we're are willing to pay in order to provide everyone with the best Christian Forum Network on the Web.

Not everyone may be willing to make that sacrifice and that is fine... we won't hold it against you if you seek out someplace where that sacrifice isn't necessary.

ta_mosquito -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/12/2007 3:31:54 PM)

Fritz - from Bob's point of view - could the post count be static instead of dynamic? In other words, could the post count go up when new posts are made, like a counter, but disconnect from those posts so as not to go down when posts are purged?

Kinda like how the odometer on a car doesn't go backwards when the car is in reverse...

WOW! That is what I call binging and purging... big time!

Purge away if it keeps us online!

I'd rather not.

I like knowing how active a person is NOW. Not two years ago.

bob97 -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/12/2007 7:25:43 PM)

I really don't keep track of my post, other than what the counter says. That being said I would image that I post something on the average of 5 to 6 time a day, which would be around 2000 post/year. I am quite sure that I am posting more today than I did last year.

My solution would be the same as suggested by Tricia but maybe that is too big of a project. I guess if I am the only concerned about this it must not be much of an issue.

No I’ll just continue on and if I become a new member again I’ll just live with it.

Bob

zoebob -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/12/2007 7:31:50 PM)

If you post 2000 times a year you won't become a new member again. Remember only threads that have been inactive for a year are purged. Just because a thread is a year old it is not necessarily purged if it is active.

bob97 -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/12/2007 7:56:20 PM)

It would be interesting three years from now to be able to look and see... golly I posted that many times! As Tricia says... kind of an odometer telling how many miles we have logged.

The way it stands today, I have no ideal how many times that I've posted since I've been online with crosswalk.

Bob

Ellie-Mae -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/12/2007 8:01:11 PM)

Trust me... I for one do NOT want to know how many posts that I have posted in the last seven years.[;)] i used to be way more post happy than I am now.

bob97 -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (11/12/2007 10:07:30 PM)

Well Ellie, I guess I’m still new at the game. I’ve only been posting here for about 16 months. Guess that makes me almost an infant. I’ve still got a lot to learn.

Are posts transferrable?[:D] Not to burden our dearest and beloved administration, they got much other work to do, but…

I, for one, don’t care ab. being Senior or Super – would rather be stuck in “New” for life, this way any occasional idiotisms I produce will be written off as: “ uh, those freshy newbies.. what to expect…”:)
So I gladly give my post count to whoever wants to be Senior and can use them.

For Sale: 654 posts, slightly used, in very good condition, mostly content-free, not particularly smart or anything- very cheap!.
Or, rather ,well.. free.

Greetings

I have a suggestion…

Have the field in the database that tracks and accumulates the current posts and accumulate the most recent posts and than back that up or append it into a total count field....like we would appened to a log file
And just have the total count field appear in the number of posts..
Rather than the field in the database that purges after a certain amount

PinkCarnations -> Numbers of posts declining (5/2/2009 5:40:29 PM)

It doesn't bother me to have the post count go down. In fact, I view it as kind of a challenge............ see approx. how many posts I had the day before and if I can get back up to that. Right now, I'm at 8428, but a few days ago I was at around 8500. So it's a challenge to get back up there. [;)]

WhiteRoseBlessings -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (5/3/2009 12:38:39 AM)

I used to have over 32,000 posts. [sm=icon_smile_tongue.gif]

I have no idea how many posts I have right now, but I know it is significantly less that what it used to be. I'll look at my post count once I post this post.

Post counts just aren't really that big of a deal to me. Usually the only time I know what my post count is, is when someone points it out to me.

And if I'm remembering correctly the other format (pre-merger) didn't even have a post count; and I was playing in the threads for 3 years prior to the merger. Just think of all those uncounted posts.

Holdcard -> RE: Numbers of posts declining (5/22/2009 10:38:58 AM)

I tend to read a lot more than I post. The only real down side would be if someone's post count went below the 50 required for the avatar etc. Otherwise no big deal, I'd almost like to see some threads pruned more often. When reading a long thread it's tempting to jump to the end to make your comment, but unless you read the entire thread you may be making a point that's been made many times before, which only makes the thread longer and doesn't really add any usable content.

Just my opinion though, I don't know what the rhymes and reasons are behind it all.

Sharon-Marie, you presently have 19331 posts, which is still more than me! [8D]
