No vacuuming? I am so glad I don't have your doctor and that list, lol! Way to restrictive for me...

I was never told any list of restrictions...in fact I was never told anything. Good thing though, I didnt have an opportunity to rest and 'recover' anyway.

I didn't have a list either, Erin. I was back to work within 2.5-3 weeks, I was shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc... within days of giving birth. Actually, we went shopping the day we went home from the hospital. The longest amount of real downtime I had was when Gabby was in the NICU for a couple days.

I don't have time for that sort of thing and I felt fine.

I was released after 12 hours, then was back to work (part time but the rest of the time was at the NICU) in one week. The week I was off I was at the NICU and staying in a hotel. The biggest downtime I had was right before he came home and we "roomed in" but by that point I was two months post partum.

I *think* L&D gave me a handout type flier, I dont really remember. I just remember saying, "yeah, fine. I feel fine, can I leave now?" I think they thought something was wrong with me because I was literally bouncing off the walls trying to get out of there. They kept asking if I needed anything a shower or anything, I told them no, I just want to leave, I'll shower at home. They finally gave in. They had no reason to keep me. My BP was coming back down, the only meds I had was an ibuprofen and a stool softener!

I really liked being given a list of things that I should avoid/minimize for those first 3-4 weeks after birth. My bleeding was pretty light and I healed very quickly which was nice. But the list also gave me something to refer to and allow myself to say, "It's ok if I don't do this stuff"...and I also have my amazingly helpful Joel who did all the cooking and cleaning after both the girls were born so I didn't feel guilty for not keeping up.

(I'm talking about Jael's birth here)

I have never really been given a list, but I have had to go by flow as to when I was overdoing it. Some births were just a few weeks, some were up to 6 months before I was back in the swing of things. (All of mine were vaginal births though, so add time for sure because of the c-sec).

The one job I like to do every day is vacuum...even if I have to roll around in my desk chair to get it done. The kids are in charge of picking up everything in front of the vacuum though, so that helps...lol.

Yuu're absolutely right, Kim.

From the ParentTime site, re activity restraints during c-section recovery:
quote:

1. Your activity level will be very, very low for at least a month. You've not only created another human being, you've also had major surgery. Your body has been incised right down to the uterus, and it's going to take weeks for the internal and external sutures to heal. You will be told not to climb stairs, not to lift your baby in and out of the car and not to carry anything heavier than a coffee cup if you can help it for the next six weeks. Your abdomen, being right in the center of you, controls the way your back and bowels work, and can be felt if you stretch your arms up over your head right now. Ask your doctor how soon after your C-section you can expect to start taking walks, and find out what a reasonable amount of time is for walking.

I totally agree with vacuuming being out of bounds too - not for the pushing it back and forth, but for when you twist and turn. It's often the swivelling, even slight swivelling, that can cause the problem. Hence ironing is best avoided too.

And you also need someone to go with you for the grocery shopping, because the lifting and twisting as the trolley (cart) is loaded, then unloaded, then packed and put into the car, is not good for someone who's had a section. And that's quite apart from the dangers of lifting the heavy bags.

I've never had activity limitations either in either the early years (17 years ago) or more recently, but I've only had vaginal births. I didn't even have specific activity restrictions after I hemorrhaged and almost needed a transfusion.

I know that there are specific things that one should restrict from activity after a c-section, but those are because it is major abdominal surgery, not because of birth. My sister (who has had 3 c-sections) has those restrictions, but I didn't -- same time frame for our births.

Christine, I know you love your Wii Fit and nightly walk but you want to calm it down a bit for a few more weeks. Bleeding, as has been said, is an indicator you are doing too much.

My MW loosely told me that if I had a Csection there would be only one set of stairs a day for 4 weeks afterwards. No vacuuming or lifting more than the baby for 3 weeks.

Seriously, the first 6 weeks PP some women have to restrict almost everything they do. If I walked too much I bled, if I was up and down too much I bled. If I stood making dinner too long, I bled. No pain but bleeding was my sign to back down and just sleep/relax and snuggle with the baby.

agree with Brandy, except I would add that sometimes it takes much longer then 6 weeks to heal. After one of mine (again, just a vaginal birth, smallest5 of mine at birth, no tears or anything major) I had to restrict stuff until she was about 6 months old...thats when I finally stopped bleeding off and on.

YIKES!!!

Christine, *please* tell me you haven't been doing your Wii Fit??!!!!

If you have, no wonder you're bleeding more than you should be.

Even the walks need to be measured and careful (and tempered with rest). How far do you usually walk?

Brandy,

I'd advise against doing any exercise other than gentle walking after a Caesarean section.

Abdominal surgery is major. It means cutting through so many layers, including muscle, and they need time to heal before before stretched again.

As per the article I quoted before:
quote:

Your abdomen, being right in the center of you, controls the way your back and bowels work, and can be felt if you stretch your arms up over your head right now.

Stretching any part of the trunk is going to stress the abdomen.

Women who have vaginal deliveries should not be doing yoga till at least 6 weeks after delivery, and for women who've had caesarean deliveries it should be even longer.

Gotta agree with Manda on this one...even after vaginal deliveries you really need to give your body time to heal up before starting that kind of stuff again...and I would guess even more so after abdominal surgery like a C-sec.

I think that depends on what you were doing before the delivery, for vaginal births anyway. I was back to walking a couple miles at a time within...2 weeks? of having Gabby. I don't plan on waiting 6 weeks to resume exercise next time either unless I have complications or something.

I appreciate y'alls concern.

To answer all your questions quickly: my bleeding is not coinciding with my level of activity at all. I've been tracking that. And as far as my Wii fit is concerned, All I'm doing is the breathing and yoga exercises and the balance games. Nothing too active.

And my doctor just said no driving for two weeks and no housework. I haven't been vacuuming (no carpet) or any other housework other than cleaning up after myself and folding laundry. DH does everything else.

My bleeding has gotten a lot better. It was just that one day, it seems. And the pain is non-existent now. I haven't felt anything since Friday.

And on that note, I have a baby who needs to be fed.

Wow I think its odd that people don't rest after a c-section. I know all my friends who have had c-sections are given a list (a print out, I've seen it on their fridges ) of things they have to avoid and the time limit. It just makes sense, you have a major op, you rest.
Glad that you are doing better Christine.

It's not actually "active" exercises I'm concerned about, it's stretching ones. Anything that stretches anywhere in your abdomen can cause a problem.

Very glad the pain has gone. Sometimes you can get an isolated rush of blood from a "pocket" in your uterus where it has accumulated, and then you move a bit more and it empties. Apparently many of us have irregularly shaped uteruses!

Here I am... we are at 6 days since baby came. She is just so precious.

Thank goodness I went on my meds while I was pregnant, I am fighting PPD symptoms again, but they are 200% better than last time, I just notice a few things this time... no appetite, hate being alone, don't like it when it starts to get dark. Little things like that. I've been crying some too, but I think that's pretty normal.

I had a 4th degree tear, and many stitches, but I find they are feeling better every day, so that's a good sign. I saw a nurse at the discharge clinic yesterday and she said that they look much better, so I'm glad for that.

My hubby has been great with our older son, he's been spending lots of time with him, but that means they aren't around very much. I sure miss the little guy. My heart breaks for him, he isn't sure what's going on. I'm scared for next week when hubby goes back to work and it's just me and the two of them. I just have to remind myself that other people have had 2 kids before (or 3 or 4 or 5) I guess I'm just at a point where I get lonely, so I hope I can hold it together.

I think we're in the middle of a growth spurt, and she's finally sleeping, so I'm off to have a shower now, have friends bringing supper and I want to clean up a bit.

No questions, just venting....

Yolanda

What happened in the end about your thyroid? Did they put you on any meds?

In any case I'd advise you get it checked asap, because pregnancy puts a tremendous strain on your thyroid (which is why it swells in late pregnancy) and either your thyroxine might need adjusting or you might need to start taking thyroxine. An underactive thyroid can contribute to PPD.

I've been on Synthroid the whole pregnancy, they've checked my levels frequently, about every 3-4 months, and will be checking them at my next appointment with my family dr, baby's 2 week check up.

That's good!! I'm glad they are taking care of that!!

(My second pregnancy was the trigger for my thyroid failing and going way under)

Congratulations Yolanda! Welcome sweet little Calli! Once your hubby goes back to work is it possible to have some of your church friends stop by once a day for a week or more to see if you need any help? That might give you something to look forward to each day (a friendly visit) and to not feel isolated.

We're doing well here! I had a little scare late last Tuesday night. I went to the bathroom and there was a thin piece of tissue dangling from me! I got super worried and thought that it must have been some sort of vaginal prolapse. I called my doc's office the next morning and was seen that afternoon (had to wait until Joel got back from his Calculus class). When the doc came in and asked me how I was doing I burst into tears because I was terrified (as I had told Joel) that I had 'broken my noonie' !! My doc checked me and assured me that it wasn't a prolapse and that it was infact retained placental membranes. My placenta had come out completely intact but the membranes that hold it in place against my uterus during pregnancy had not come loose until then. He gently removed them and I've been good to go since. Thankfully!

Jac has been nursing like a champ and came through his circumcision wonderfully (though he was most definitely in pain for an hour following the procedure). He has also decided to be my 'quick gainer'. Both Hannah and Jael were slow gainers...but Jac! He had regained his birth weight plus an ounce by 3 days post birth and on Monday when we had the circ. he had gained 13 ozs. from the week prior!!! I was shocked but happy. It will be a very nice surprise if I don't have to worry about his weight gain like I did with my other two dears.

Hannah is loving being a big sister for the second time around. She can't get enough of 'the new baby' and is always asking if he's happy and wanting to help with anything and everything. She loves to hold him and kiss on him which is just so sweet to watch. My dear Jael loves "BABY JAC" as she calls him with happy yell everytime she greets us in the morning! she's just decided today that she wants to give him sweet touches, as opposed to no touches which is super sweet too!!

I'm so thankful that the Lord has blessed us and our little family so abundantly that it's hard to put into words!

WOW that is weird Kim...glad your dr checked you out though and that it was nothing.

Yolanda...one week PP is a time frame when your hormones are wacko anyway, they really fluctuate those first few weeks and for me seem to hit peaks at the week marks. So just get a heads up about that, mark your calendar, so you don't think you are going insane.
