Yes...they're in second place for spending but they've got a FANTASTIC farm team. The Yanks may have some good pitching in their farm system...but they've typicall not used it much. All they've got to show for *all* those pitchers they tried out last year is Joba Chamberlin...and he's nothing special, imo...too cocky!

Sideways -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (2/13/2008 4:55:03 PM)

What about Phillip and Kennedy? Joba is cocky? Really? He's struck me as a good ol' farm boy, more bouncy like a little boy then arrogant.

Cano was a farm system product, too, and he's doing well. I agree that for years the Yanks were not developing a good farm system, but that has really turned around since Brian Cashman took a firmer hand in running things.

Phillip Huges is just an 'ok'pitcher. Joba definitely struck both Joel and me as cocky. He just gets this look on his face like, "Yeah I know I'm good" which a young rookie, imo, shouldn't have.

That is good that the Yanks are developing a better farm system. Especially since so many of their players (like Mariano) are aging, and fast!

Sideways -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (2/13/2008 6:46:48 PM)

I'm not to concerned "the look" a player has on his face, but they've got to be cocky even to make it into the major leagues. A timid player will never make it past AA. Joba must believe he will get every single batter he faces out - and most of the time - he's right![:D]

What concerns me more is how he treats people around him, the press, the fans and his fellow players. As far as I know he's been polite and kind. Until he shows otherwise, I'll regard him as a good kid.

clag4christ -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (2/19/2008 3:31:30 PM)

It appears the first game we're gonna get here on tv is about 10 days away...Braves v. Dodgers. I have no idea if they're playing here in the US or in Japan or somewhere else, lol. But it'll be nice just to see some real sport on the tube again!

Woohooooo!!!!!!

(nice to see you again Christi! [:D])

zmanfan38 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (2/19/2008 8:52:50 PM)

Good to see you too, clag4christ!!! I've missed talking baseball with you.

Oh, and Joey...

Me too!!!

So...what's the one (or more) move that you're happy that your Cubbies have made in the off season?

You know, we didn't make any huge moves like last year when we picked up Soriano, but we did get the Japanese phenom (gotta watch this spelling) Fukudome, and it'll be pretty cool to see how he fits in.

Soto got the starting catcher's position. He looked great last year in the 2 spot.

One thing I'm eager to see is who gets that closer position. Howry, Marmol, and Kerry Wood are all vying for the position during Spring Training. I'd love to see Wood get back in the game. He's spent a lot of time trying to come back from injuries in the last couple of years after being our #1 starter.

Oh, and let me tell you how much I wish we were an East Coast team with ST in Florida (I wanted Santana!!!).[:D]

I haven't heard anything about your Sox. What's new with them?

OOOHhhh!!! I was hoping we would have gotten Santana too! Those lucky Mets! [;)]

Not seen anything new about the Sox other than that Coco might be asking for a trade. [:(] Do you do Fantasy Baseball?

Bummer...he makes me think of cereal.[:D]

No, I've never tried Fantasy Baseball. I've hear it can be pretty time consuming. Do you do it? Is that true?

clag4christ -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (2/20/2008 3:32:01 PM)

It's not that time consuming for me actually. I've been in my husbands rotisserie league for like 6 years now. It's a lot of fun...if you'd like to join up I'd be happy to have him send you an invite! But be forewarned...he does an insane amount of research, lol. I just try and keep up! [;)]

zmanfan38 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (2/20/2008 7:08:24 PM)

Oh my! That just might be over my head.[sm=rolleyes.gif][:D] There's no way I'd be able to put much time into it at all. Maybe when my little one is older you guys can fill me in.

Sure thing! It really does only take me minutes every day to put in my pitchers and adjust my roster. But I understand your concerns. [:)]

Blessings,
Kim

[sm=biggrin.gif]Thank you, thank you very much. Of course it's gonna cost a year's salary to go to a game now. Good thing every game gets broadcast.

Erin0683 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (2/26/2008 4:11:12 PM)

Hmmm...I know the Astros don't have a decent pitching rotation behind Roy... but I am still rooting for them! It's my home team and my favorite team! They have surprise people in the past! Maybe they can do it again! Hopefully our starting pitchers will step up! We definately have a good batting line up this year which we needed.
