Sylvia planted seeds under the front outside faucst and we have had six cucumbers and hundreds of blooms already. She also has about four potted peppers, starting to bear fruit. Shes done for the day though, we are battling a beaver that waits till the tomatoes get ripe and snatches them. She went today and rejoiced coming back with a small and untouched roma, however she also saw we have several handfuls of blackberries and she sat down to pick them, and ever since, well we believe she may have picked up some chiggers. Does anybody know how much ammonia to put in a bath to er ah eradicate that particular problem? She is too embarassed with where she got the chiggers to let me call the doctor.

Thank you! Although we cannot resort to nail polish on one of the affected areas for reasons I will not go into, the other suggestiions are great and I am going to have to cut this short and go purchase some liquid benadryl and lavender oil.

Thanks to all for the suggestions, the lavender oil and benadryl has provided relief from the itching.

I cannot thank you enough, Agapetos, although the nail polish, in retrospect, gave me a laugh. Much better today, and getting ready to o to the wedding. Taking a folding chair for the reception outside, though, May never sit on the ground again. God Bless, you saved a wedding, and probably several baptisms at the river today.

By the way, regarding cucumbers, I am not sure what kind of seeds you planted but the straight eight seed is hearty and will work well even can be purchased drought resistant, but i never grew them in containers, as they like to spread. This year indeed I did plant then under the faucet in the front of the house and they bloomed quite a lot, and now we have pulled maybe six cucumbers so far. If you want to pickle the cucumbers, pick them at about 4-6 inches when they are not real fat or long, if you want them for salad or just sliced or as icebox cucumbers, 6-8 inches is about ideal. Any desire for a cucumber canning recipe for pickles, let me know, or also icebox cucumbers. Me, I can eat cucumber sandwiches all day except for when I need chocolate or cheese.

My squash and zucchini died off, but the herbs, grape tomatoes and jalapenos are hot and heavy. The larger tomatoes are progressing. The eggplant is still alive, but not growing much. I assume the sweet potatoes are still doing fine... the vine looks healthy. The bell peppers are starting to flower. I'm not having any bug problems right now.

I have three bell peppers. I'm wondering how I missed them yesterday. One's as big as an apricot. I must be blind!

We still have our plants in the plastic bin in the bathroom window. I haven't quite figured out what to replant them in now that everything has sprouted.

Basil, lettuce, peppers, and tomatoes.
Basil and lettuce I think can stay in the plastic container. The peppers and tomatoes need to be replanted, probably sooner than later. The peppers are about 7" high, and the tomatoes are a bit shorter. The other problem is that its still too hot to leave plants outside.

The tomatoes and peppers can both go in the ground or in large pots. I'm growing my tomatoes in pots, they hold about 10 litres (sorry, my brain isn't up to converting that right now). They measure around 12" high and maybes 10" across. One plant per pot. If I was growing peppers, they'd grow in the same size pots too!
I have to admit that I baby my seedling some, although it's also been stuff that I've read should be done. I use coir pots (the ones that break down) so that I can increase the size a couple of times before putting them in their final position ~ it also means that I can protect them better (bringing them in at night and stuff).
We have growbags here ~ do you have them? They're bags of compost and are long and quite narrow. Each bag holds around 30 litres and the aim is to plant things into the growbag, then get rid of it at the end of the year.
Is it the heat that is too strong? How would they fare if they were in shade? You can get stuff that helps shield plants from the sun.
We're not seeing much sun right now, and rain is predicted for the rest of the week.

I just had to share my excitement...
I have 2 tomatoes coming along... and I am super excited. I've had tomatoes here before, but not for 2 years. Last year the tomato plants just plain died. This year I thought they were dying, but I just noticed that I have 2 tomatoes!!!!! I'm excited!! They're still very very green, but they're doing so well... =)
Also, no squash yet... but the plants haven't actually died, so maybe there is still hope afterall...
And finally, I planted (late) some beans and some cucumbers. The cucumbers are blossoming like crazy, and the beans have blossomed some... but I just noticed some beans on the vine!!! =) YAY!!! This is the best "crop" of veggies I've had in a couple of years. Sad, I know. I'm excited though!!

WooHoo, Pumpkin!! You give me hope that next year I won't take my garden for granted... it's so wierd, because I'm not a feelly, sensitive person... but I keep thinking that it is so sad that I will never have the joy and amazement this first garden has brought.
I have thousands of jalapenos. We've given away, pickled them, and I have a slew I will cut up and freeze. I will use them in my chili. It's funny the three things I can't eat much of/don't know what to do with them have grown like wildfire, but the things I could devour have not come along at all or have died. The three things that are doing so well, are the japs, basil, and lavendar. My tomatoes have some fruit, but not much. The eggplant is almost 8 inches tall.  The squash and zuc have died off. The parsley, oregano, mint, and savory are small. The bell peppers are coming along well, though. I have about ten on the plant now. They are small, but one is almost red. We already ate one green because it had a bad spot... so dh brought it in and most of it was edible... but I can't wait for that red one!

They supposed to be really easy to grow, and mine certainly seem to be growing!
. I must have dealt with about 40 over the past few nights and mornings. They've really done a number on my sprout plants though.
