Pat, I know what you mean about the movies. I couldn't believe how far from the books the plots are either.

I know it's such a shame; but only those who have read the books would know.

quote:

As for the books, I've ordered the last of the books of hers that I can get my hands on. They are currently on their way from the US. I haven't read the children's stories, or her biography as it's now out of print. I'm reading her "Women Of The West" series at the moment, and then just have the "Song Of Acadia" books to read, and then I've read all the books of hers that I can get my hands on. I've passed the books on to others to read too, so they're getting plenty of use.

Have you tried ebay, Half.com, or Amazon New & Used Books? I've gotten many of her books (replacing ones I've given away) at all of these places and only one time did I get a bad deal (the book ordered and paid for never arrived), and the prices are great!!
Just a suggestion.

Pat

P.S. Did you know that the 'The Tender Years, Prairie Legacy Series' is --- Excerpt:
Building on the delightful tales of Love Comes Softly, Oke continues the saga of Marty and Clark's descendants. You'll share the pain and joy of Belinda's daughter, Virginia, during the tender years when she's no longer a child but not yet an adult. A poignant coming-of-age story that mothers and daughters everywhere will love! 272 pages, softcover from Bethany.
I loved them; especially the last one of this series - 'Like Gold Refined'

My favourite author is Janette Oke. I've just about read all of her books. I love her style and the way she writes. Thinking ahead to when I've finished the last of her books, does anybody know of another author who is very similar in style and genre?

My husband has been reading the Gilbert Morris books. They're historical novels so you might like them. Just about the only fiction I've read is by Davis Bunn (aka T. Davis Bunn); I'm just not a fan of fiction.

Yes, I've read the Tender Years and the rest of the series. A friend is reading it right now. (I've got her hooked on Janette Oke too). Just have the rest of the "Women Of The West" series to read, and the "Song Of Acadia" series to read. I don't have a credit card to be able to pay on ebay or other sites.

"Song of Acadia" was her best series IMO. I also liked the spin off series by the Bunns.

T.Davis Bunn is ok, but I find his writing so very much better when teamed with Janette Oke; their series 'Song of Acadia': 'The Meeting Place'; 'Sacred Shore'; 'Birthright'; 'Distant Beacon'; 'The Beloved Land'; And 'Birthright' are among my favorites. I found through reading these books that History can be very interesting, very interesting indeed.

I didn't either. Do you all have 'Pre-paid' Credit Cards' there? We do here, so that's what I have and use for buying these off the Web.; It works great for me.

I forgot to answer this:
quote:

..... does anybody know of another author who is very similar in style and genre?

Frank E. Peretti is my favorite male author, I like his style of writing. I would check out 'Tilly' first to see if you like him too.; a Fiction - 2003 - 128 pages
Originally presented as a radio drama on Focus on the Family, Tilly is a deeply moving novel--an unforgettable story of life, love, and Christ's love and forgiveness.
If you find that you like his type writing, I would then try: 'The Wounded Spirit'; For even more adventure - with keen insight into spiritual warfare and the necessity of prayer you may also like: 'This Present Darkness'; 'Piercing the Darkness'; 'Prophet', --- in this order. I've read and enjoyed all of his books; including others not on this list, but not everyone can read the others --- too scary for same.

I'm just waiting for the rest of the Songs Of Acadia series to come in. I've ordered them and they are just about here from the US. I've got the last 2 books of the series, but not the start. I'm looking forward to reading them.

I don't think we do have the "Pre-paid" credit cards here. At least not that I know of.

Frank Peretti is also another of my favourite authors, although I haven't read any of his books for some time. I've read 'This Present Darkness' and 'Piercing The Darkness'. I've got some of his other books, but couldn't get into them for a long time. Maybe I'll have another go at it some time.

Have you looked into Lawanna Blackwell? Linda Lee Chaikin? Or Allison Pittman? I'm scrapping my book shelves here to give you ideas!

Lawanna Blackwell writes about Victorian times but has the more light hearted side like Oke. The series I have by Chaikin is about reformation in France and is interesting, but a little harder read and less light hearted, but still romantic. They aren't exactly like Oke, but you may enjoy them while you search for more like Oke. I've noticed in "the what are you reading now" thread that you are slamming through those old Oke books.

Ten Thousand Charms by Pittman is set in the West in the 1860's. It's about a prostitute who has a child and a man whose wife dies in childbirth. They make a pact to care for each others' children. The second in the series was good, too, but I must have loaned it out. I plan on getting the whole series at some point.

I have to admit that I haven't heard of those authors before. I'll have to check them out.

I wonder if she still writes. She'd be a grandmother by now, probably in her 70's, I imagine.

Three very good Chrisitian writers are Francine Rivers, Angela Hunt and Brandilyn Collins. I have numerous books by all of them and have enjoyed them so much as each writer develops interesting plots and stories that have depth. Keep your tissues handy on some of these. Brandilyn writes murder-mysteries that are gripping.

I have put reviews of a lot of their books on my blog:

I've heard of Francine Rivers, but haven't read any of her books. I haven't heard of the other authors.

I'm not really much into murder mysteries.

Girlfriend, you are voracious!

I have one other collection on my shelf that promises to be similar, but I haven't actually read it so I'm not the one promising. It's by Tamera Alexander and is a 3 book series called Fountain Creek Chronicles.

Thanks for that. I looked it up online at my favourite Christian bookstore and ordered it Monday. It arrived yesterday morning.

Sure! Let me know how you like it because I don't know when I'll get around to reading mine. I had saved it back for vacation in March to make sure I had plenty to read and then was too busy to read it on vacation.

Ok, I've just got one book to read first, and then I'll start reading the Tamera Alexander books. I'll let you know how they go.

I am listening to Rekindled on CD by Tamera Alexander. I had never read or heard of any of her books before. So far its been good. Is Rekindled part of a series?

Yeah, it is one of the books in the series. I'm going to read it next after the book that I'm currently reading.

I read two of her books about 20 years ago or so. I read Love Comes Softly and Love's Enduring Promise. Funny that I came across this post today -- TBN aired the Love's Enduring Promise movie last night or the night before. I remember liking her books but it's been so long ago, I couldn't possibly suggest anyone similar.

We've had Love Comes Softly played on the TV a couple of times, and the next one once. Unfortunately that's about as much as they allow of Christian programmes on the TV here.
