Ours will be going back to the IRS.

I don't think parents with children over 17 are eligible to receive the stimulus payment on their child even if they are a dependent. But, will my 18 year old daughter (who is still a dependent) receive her own stimulus payment if she had income over $3000?

From the irs.gov site:
Starting in May, the Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households. To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. IRS will take care of the rest. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17. Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers who usually are exempt from filing a tax return must do so this year in order to receive a stimulus payment.

We're going to replace our dying television, computer, and digital camera (all are several years old) and then put a few hundred in savings.

We're going to use it to buy our curriculum for this next school year, and if there's any left, set aside in our fund to replace the vehicle.

Meg and Crown,

I checked the IRS website again and you are correct. Children 17 and over will not be eligible for a stimulus payment as long as they are a dependent.
(The 17th birthday needs to be prior to Jan 1, 2008.)

Leave it to the IRS to make things more complicated than necessary.

I voted Bills, Gas tank, and Charity. Exactly what we do with it will depend on when it gets here. (Has there been any kind of confirmed chart showing the dates they get sent out?) Right now hubby is using around $120/week in gas and that's coming straight out of our weekly budget which REALLY hurts. So by the time the check gets here, we'll probably have some monthly bills to catch up on, and the rest will get stashed away for gas. After we give a portion as an offering of course.

irs.gov has updated their site with a rebate check calculator, and chart for when you can expect your direct deposit or check. We should get ours via direct deposit on May 9. ***whew***

Mine will go toward savings. But we need a new digital camera. So maybe we will do a camera and something for my husband and pay down our principal.

Don't know, as i am looking for a new job, so I don't want to spend any of the tax return or stimulus payment until I find a job. I would rather be cash happy until I find a new job. Then we can spend it.

First, it will go into savings.

Second, once I know waht my property taxes will be this year, I will transfer some to my mortgage escrow account to cover increased taxes. I expect to use 25%-50% (maybe more) of it for that alone.

Third, what is left over will probably be split between additional stocking up on staples and donations.

The wife and I have a few options. New washer and dryer, 42 inch TV, pay off some debt, or put it towards a vacation.

According to the IRS, my wife should have received her payment last week. Mine is supposed to be in the last batch because my SSN # ends in the 80's. Since we filed jointly, will we get one check instead of two? When is that supposed to come? Just wondering........

If you filed jointly, it will come together and the timing will be based on the SSN of the first person listed on the return.

I just paid off 2 credit cards. We have several to go, but I'm hoping I can put $500-1000 per month and take it down quickly.

I saw a news report yesterday that said that retail sales are down again. I guess the stimulus isn't all that stimulating.

Well of course it isn't, since both food and gas prices have risen so much since the stimulus was announced. People around here are focusing on necessities and/or paying down debt instead of buying more "stuff".

Of course, a lot of people still haven't gotten theirs yet, either. I'm the only one in our women's group at church who has gotten one yet. I don't know if it'll do much good either, but I think it's too early to know yet.

We are doing this too. Plus we may get a new mattress/box spring set, ours is SO OLD. Some(Key word-but most will go to that "Bill guy") may go in savings for a "rainy" day and some on bills. (Boy I will that "Bill guy would quite writing me" )

A new mattress set for us IS a necessity, ours is so old . Oh, of course I voted $$ on GAS too .

We haven't, of course we are one of those that Donna was talking about the "third party thing" in the other thread. H & R Block does our taxes and it gets e-filed and they get a Loan atisipation check for us and we deposit it from that. SO we should get it at the end of the month, according to IRS site because of DH's # it will be mailed out on the 23rd(or is that when we should get it?-which ever )

About half of mine went to pay for a business trip for my Pampered Chef business. I voted "other" for that although I suppose it's an investment.

The other money went into savings but will eventually pay for gas in the tank.

I would think that it wouldn't matter if you spent it on needs or wants, it would still accomplish the same goal (if it works). I don't think saving it would help stimulate the economy, (unless you buy stocks or somethng) or giving it to people in other countries, but everything else probably would.

I'll pay some bills. If my van is still hanging together by then, it will go towards a newer car. If my van has totally died then I will have to borrow from my parents for a newer vehicle and then that cost will be part of payiing bills.

I will treat us to a meal out or some needed clothes or something with a little of it.
