KEN HAGIN:

"Because we didn't understand what Jesus said, and because we've been religiously brainwashed instead of New Testament taught. We watered down the promises of God, and tacked on what Jesus didn't say. And added on something else to it. Well, he will be alright, 'if it's His will' But it might not be His will, people have said. And yet you don't find that kind of talk in the New Testament."

"It is unscriptural to pray, 'If it is the will of God.' When you put an 'if' in your prayer, you are praying in doubt."

What does the Bible say?

James 4:14-16 (New International Version)

14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." 16 As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil.

"Why did He need to be begotten or born? Because He became like we were - separated from God. Because He tasted spiritual death for every man. And His spirit and inner men went to hell in my place. Jesus did not taste spiritual death. Jesus didn't need to become born again. His spirit was not estranged from God. He did not go to hell to pay for our sins. He paid for our sins on the Cross.

What does Jesus say?

Luke 23:46

46 And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT." Having said this, He breathed His last.

This is all in his mind. Unbiblical. Cannot even be apprehended.

It really scares me that people are accepting this nonsense.

One question that comes up--I'd like to address that.

Some of the more visible WOF teachers like Coplan Meyer, do they speak for the WOF movement? Or are they aberrations? We have had WOF people in CW Forums who do not agree with the more popular teachers, who steadfastly deny that these people are mainstream WOF. (Yet, they condemn them only when pressed to give an opinion, they tend to not do so voluntarily.)

Who speaks for them regarding these aberrant or unorthodox doctrines?
Are these aberrant/unorthodox doctrines consistently WOF?

Copeland and Meyer are typical representatives of WOF. To get to the source of the teachings of WOF, you might want to research Kenneth Hagin, who is considered to be the father of the modern WOF movement, and EW Kenyon, who Hagin plagarized and derived many of his teachings from. Once you study their teachings you can then see where other WOF teachers derive their doctine from.

Maybe some WOF supporters/followers just do not understand or know the true teachings of the movement, but WOF does have a specific set of aberrant teachings which go along with it by default. You can read a general but excellent article about WOF history, basic teachings, publications, etc. here:

again, stop grouping people together into "wof". please, criticize individuals, either indiviudal churches or people.
secondly, just because i may enjoy the teaching one one speaker, does not mean i have to agree with everything they teach. i've listened to speakers, where i've disagreed with most of their interpretations of the Bible, but one thing they said changed my life.
thirdly, i find it interesting that most of the sites and books listed that refute these "wof" speakers are using OUTDATED info. i'm glad every word i've ever spoke isn't written do for posterity. many of these wof preachers have CHANGED over the years. if your going to quote one, please give the date of the quote.

funny, i don't see her saying any more that Jesus went to hell to defeat satan. maybe she's realized she preached erroneous doctrine and has changed. gosh, can God forgive a wof heretic? can wof heretics really change? maybe judgemental people should research what people are saying TODAY, instead of what they preached 10 years ago.

That's why a person should know a bit of theology before they set themself up as spititual potentate of the planet because most believers stop listening to someone once it is clear they are preaching junk. Take Kenneth Copeland for example. He may be spot on now but the last time I heard him preach it was total baloney. That was about 20 years ago. I haven't had the slightest urge to check him out again.

But in all fairness, Paul scuttled John Mark but he eventually grew up spiritually and became an excellent kingdom worker.

This is some of what I have been pondering. I had heard that Joyce had changed her message and she is still being criticized as someone who changes her message. Well, if she came upon the Truth, repented of teaching falsely and is now teaching Truth, I think folks need to back off. The same holds true for Joel Osteen. He has publicly apologized for his interview with Larry King. How many will still read the interview and declare him a false teacher? Will they see the apology? I heard him share the Truth of the Gospel without hesitation on TV just a couple of weeks ago. He talked about sin, the need for repentence and said that Jesus paid the price for sin on the cross.

We need to be careful of the teaching we sit under. We need to handle God's word accurately. We are told to beware of false teachers. I do not see where we are to berate them publicly, like on these forums. If you know it is false, don't sit under it. Take care of your self and your family and be sure to surround yourself with teaching that is Scriptural. If you know someone is sitting under false teaching, gently speak the Truth to them and suggest that they study God's word and not depend on the teaching of man.

These men and women are accountable to God and to their church or their ministry boards. It would be the job of those folks to handle the corrections as they are needed.

There is a point where the criticism turns unfruitful. I do feel people can be made aware of a false teaching, such as WOF, but to lump everyone who may speak on prosperity...you just don't have the entire picture. I have heard Southern Baptist and Independent Baptist speak on the blessings God provides to those who believe. He does...within His time and His will and not just because we believe "enough" and claim it.

Caution to the criticism of the individual. You cannot know a man or woman's heart just from one sermon, or six heard on TV, nor can you know them by someone's research on the internet who is looking for the slant against them in the first place.

I guess I ramble on too much but I just think a word of caution is needed before these posts continue to discredit people. Sure, there are probably many you speak of that fall into the false teaching catagory, but be careful of labeling people...you do not know their heart.

There are SO MANY Christians and non-believers who do not understand what WOF really is. Some get sucked into it because no one warned them and no one opened their mouths to speak against it. That is my biggest concern, and that is the only reason why I post the beliefs and quotes, and compare them to the bible... and I will continue to do so. The evidence of the aberrant core doctrines of WOF have already been presented here many, many times. If one person stays away from WOF because they saw a quote or learned what the Bible says in comparison to a false teacher, then all I can do is rejoice. This is not about a personal attack on individuals for no reason, this is not about a personal agenda. For me, it is all about helping others avoid false teachers.

We can't judge anyone's heart, and I don't see anyone trying to do that here, but we certainly can spot false doctrine and call it exactly what it is: false.

The article you gave the link for gives no evidence that Joyce Meyers has repented of the atonement in hell doctrine. They all preach the salvation of Jesus, but which Jesus. The one who atoned on the cross, or the one who atoned in hell. If she has repented of all aberrant WOF doctrine, that is what we need to see proof of, with her specifically addressing the false teachings and recanting them. I would be thrilled to see Ms. Meyers or any WOF teacher come to the truth of the Bible. They are lovely people, often great speakers, and I have no doubt that most are very sincere. But sincerity counts for nothing in the end. Note: you typically will never see any hint of Jesus' atonement in hell on any of their sites right up front. It's only when you read their books or listen to their tapes that you will start to see the atonement doctrine coming out.

You clearly don't have a right understanding of judging. It is NOT judgemental to tell the wrong teachings the WOF does.

The Word Faith basically teaches the following, although not all Word Faith teachers are unified in all that they believe: Christians are little gods (Are Christians little gods?) Jesus did not pay for our sins on the cross but he had to finish the job of atonement in hell (Did Jesus pay for our sins in hell?). We can command God by our words and God wants us healthy and wealthy (Danger of Blessings). If Christians are not healthy and wealthy it is because of our lack of faith and/or knowledge (Christians and Sickness). Christians have total control over their environment by the words that we speak, if we speak sickness and poverty we will be sick and broke. Conversely, if Christians speak blessings and healing we will be healthy and wealthy.Jesus finished the atonement in Hell. He was tormented and tortured by demons. Jesus died spiritually. Jesus is the first Born-Again man. Positive Confession. Faith in Faith.

Kenneth Copeland

"Not only did Jesus pass the test Adam failed, but He also paid the price for Adam's treason---He made Himself obedient unto death, paid the price in the punishment of hell for Adam's sin...In His victory over death, Jesus became the first born-again man of many who would be born in the image of God."

Unbiblical and heretical.

That is not at all what the Bible teaches. Man is NOT like God in EVERY way.

This is a total and utter misunderstanding of that that scripture is actually saying. The Bible NEVER says you can have whatever you say.

I have a question.

It appears to me that over and over again when we examine the doctrines/teachings of someone and place it beside the scripture and prove it false we are accused of being judgmental and we are not to judge people's hearts.

Now I will say that most of us do shake our heads at those comments but now I am wondering if false teachers are the very ones who are not teaching people how to examine doctrine to see if it's false or not? After all if they begin to teach people the "truth" about what the Bible teaches about examining doctrine, fruits and the truth about judging then those under their teachings might just realize they are sitting under false teachers.

Any of you know what they teach about how to examine scripture and false prophets? What the WOF says about how we can spot false teachers and how we are to respond to them?

So far this is what I have found.

The Word-Faith teachers expect everyone to accept their authority and teachings without criticism or testing. Whenever anyone challenges their teachings they promote division instead of discussion. Before his death, Dr. Walter Martin sought to dialogue with Kenneth Copeland over his teachings, yet Copeland refused to meet with Martin. Fred Price has publicly stated that he will not meet with a critic unless he has as many followers as him. Last Spring, the Christian Research Institute, a very reputable and trustworthy counter-cult and apologetic ministry, devoted a week of radio programs to exposing the errors of the Word-Faith movement. Immediately after the shows were aired, Paul Crouch had this to say about CRI during his televised "Praise-a-thon" program amid shouts of "amen" and "you tell 'em brother" from the studio audience:

"I think God's given up on a lot of that old rotten Sanhedrin religious crowd, twice dead, plucked up by the roots. I think they're damned and on their way to hell and I don't think there's any redemption for them...the heresy hunters that want to find a little mote of illegal doctrine in some Christian's eye and pluck that little mote out of their eye when they've got the whole forest in their own lives and in their own eyes. I say to hell with you! Oh hallelujah. Get out of God's way, quit blocking God's bridges or God's gonna shoot you if I don't! I refuse to argue any longer with any of you out there. Don't even call me. If you want to argue doctrine, if you want to straighten out somebody over here, if you want to criticize Ken Copeland for his preaching on faith, or Dad Hagin. Get out of my life! I don't even want to talk to you or hear you. I don't want to see your ugly face! Get out of my face in Jesus' name."(23)

Notice that there is no desire to dialogue about the issues. Notice that Paul Crouch doesn't explain why they believe what they believe and subsequently why CRI was in error for presenting the programs. All that Paul does is attack the people, he does not give an account for the hope that is in him. The Faith teachers erroneous and blasphemous teachings are what are promoting division. It is not those who criticize them and seek to dialogue with them in a reasonable matter that are to blame. It is the childish and unresponsive Word-Faith teachers that are to blame.

Is anyone aware of a "true" biblical debate any of the WOF folks have entered into with people who do not agree with their theology inorder to examine one another's beliefs? Anything serious that is not some junk with like minded WOF folks. Rather a serious theological debate examining scripture?

I am not unfamiliar with the WOF teachers. Hagin, Copeland and others have plenty of false doctrine to their record. My point is that people in these forums identify themselves as WOF but do not agree with the more heretical teachings. It's not that they don't know about it, it's that they feel those guys are a little off the mark from time to time but not always.

Of course they minimize some pretty serious stuff.

This is not about judging someone's heart. It's about judging their teaching.

And scripture does instruct us to expose false teachings. If were just minor things, then I don't think there would be much for us to say, but some of these guys have gotten into some serious false teachings. Maybe they just don't know what they're saying. If that's the case, they shouldn't be teaching at all.

Jesus tolds us that people would be judged be even small words of their mouths. You can minimize it all you want, that plain wrong.

I have just purchased 2 of JM books and now am afraid to read them due to all the comments on this forum.

I would tell you to throw them away, but there's still the chance that someone could get them and be polluted by them.

Take them somewhere and burn them.

There is a difference in having every word you speak, as an individual, being on record and what a person says from the pulpit. We pastors and preachers aren't perfect, and I don't think anyone here is stating that. I remember once I said a scripture was from Philemon when I meant Philippians. It was just a slip of the tongue. No one is stating that something like that constitutes false teaching. But when a person either continually states something or doesn't publicly apologize for preaching that is clearly in error even if they don't say it any more, that should raise questions.

Once is a mistake, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern.

I don't hate Joyce Meyers, Creflo Dollar, Benny Hinn, or any other WOF teacher/preacher. But as a child of the living God I can not sit idly by while they lead other children into error. What's even more horrible is that this false gospel can keep people from coming to Christ for real salvation.

Your best bet, as always, is to stick with the Bible instead of hearing an interpretation of the Bible through the filter of others.

I think it's new at this point, but you can see what is planned for the teachings that will be placed on the site. The overview on page one is very interesting. Any thoughts?

Most of the links on the site don't work yet but some of the titles of future pages such as "Prospertiy in Life" makes me think that the perfect place to put a link to that site is here in the Word of Faith thread. It sounds like it is going to be another "Name it and Claim it" site that makes Jesus into a magic geenie ready and willing to provide you with that new BMW you always wanted. We won't be able to know for sure until the site has more information on it but it doesn't appear to be a site that I would use for any teaching on the Word of God. There are so many more out there that teach God's word the way that Jesus lived it; a sacrificial life dedicated to service to others without His wants and desires playing a the least part in His life at all.

If you are a new believer, I would suggest a site by a well-known theologian whose teachings are more in line with the teaching of Jesus.
