It works alright, and if you live in any major city, you can get far with only "some" hassle.

Yes, our cars has much better milage compared to US cars, which is why US cars cant sell here. Honostly - why would anyone drive around in a huge beast that sips fuel like the British sips tea? Besides economics, it's an inviromental pressure that is entirely avoidable.

I guess my definition of great is better than here, especially in LA! We have hosted several exchange students from Germany and when they come here they take the public transportation (sometimes all the way across LA county) but they are always saying how public transportation is better in Europe. I haven't been to Europe, so I have to rely on their opinions.

I can opine on the difference in public transportation systems. I've lived in four major US metropolitan areas and two European cities. I could get almost anywhere I wanted to in Europe fairly easily. I lived about 45 minutes outside Vienna for a while and would have a single change of train/subway to get downtown. It was extremely easy and fast. Same for Munich.

In Chicago, I lived about 45 minutes outside the city (by car) but it took 90 minutes by train. In Harris County(aka Houston), I drove. Period. There was no way I could easily get to my office via public transportation. In Seattle, it was possible but not convenient given the hours that I worked. Here in Denver, somewhat between the Houston experience and Seattle - possible but not convenient.

Hands down, the Europeans are light years ahead of Americans on public transportation.

I currently get to ride the city buses free :) as a student in a local college (well, we pay a yearly transportation fee, but I have to pay it whether or not I use it!).

I work & go to school in "the city." It is a 45 min drive on the weekend and free parking. On weekends I drive (~$10 gas). On the weekdays, it is 1.5 drive, I have to pay $9-20 in parking depending on what is available (if anything!). One weekdays, I take the bus(es).

I can't take the city bus from home- I have to drive to a park-n-ride (for city bus) or ride the local bus into the city, then change buses to get to my area of the city. Total of 2 hours from door to door. And I have to pay for the local bus- $2.75 each way.

My dh has a 5 min commute. He sometimes takes the bus so I don't have to walk home from the bus station when it is cold (20 min walk) and when I need the car.

We could not possibly live in my area without a car. Well, we could live, but things would be very inconvenient, and we would never see our friends and family or do anything fun, as most of them live on rural roads.

I plan to buy a trike soon, to do things like shopping, etc. If I could live without a car- or use it only for emergencies, I would.

That's because we in US buy most of the gas you produce leaving none for you. [;)] And you thought we only stole your hockey players!

But it still begs the question: Why don't we put a decent mass transit system in OUR counties (ie the major urban centers).

You, as a resident of a major urban center, may be willing to pay 6, 7, 8 dollars a gallon to have the opportunity to get around town after the mass transit is put in, but I and others (many) like me who live outside of the cities would still be stuck driving to the outskirts of the city to our jobs and not have the mass transit available to us. I don't want to pay for your mass transit benefit when it doesn't benefit me in the least.

Now if you want to talk about something on the scale of the interstate highway system that works countrywide, I'm listening. But don't talk about something that branches out from the cities into outlaying areas, for the funds dry up real quick after the cities needs are met. I saw that firsthand with BART in the SF area.

CA has one of the highest state and federal gasoline taxes in the nation. The legislature steals from these funds that were supposed to go to maintain and build our transportation system to shore up funding for their other projects. Maybe if they first stop putting their hands in the cookie jar (like the feds do with Soc Sec) there would be enough money.

And just why does anyone in Denmark need gasoline?

I mean the country is about the size of my back yard.

To be clear, I do not object to paying transportation taxes at the pump, but only if those funds are for what they are supposed to be for, our roadways. As it is here those funds go into the general fund and are used on everything else BUT our roads. I see it every day as I sit in jammed traffic while dodging the huge potholes.
