I would do the same for my sons. They are now 22 and 19 and have no piercings (or tattoos).

I would let them decide on their own, I would not make that decision for them, but they would've had to wait until they were older and able to take care of their ears by themselves- just like the girls did.

Okay, fine.

BTW, but when they were teens and able to take care of the ears, did they actually know that you would have let them pierce their ears, if they had asked?

I have 2 girls and 2 boys. So far, the only one who got her ears pierced is the 15 year old.

Well they must have thought it was nice to have a tolerant mom; some moms aren't! Anyway. (Though re. your mention of the tattoos, I'm guessing you still wouldnt be too thrilled if your daughters wanted those.)

I guess it varies from family to family what age the boys' earrings thing is seen as appropriate, anyway.

I guess there is a difference, though, isnt there, because most parlors wont tattoo under 18s, after which they dont need parental permission, right?

Whereas it seems that the teens, boys as well as girls, can get into the ear piercing thing way before then.

Status: offline 		I'd want my children to wait until 18 before having a tattoo, and we'd have a long talk about them beforehand.

The boys would have the same restrictions as a girl regarding earings, old enough to take care of them, etc.

Okay, so in the end, like you wouldnt with a daughter, you wouldnt prevent your sons from having their ears done as well, if they really wanted them and could look after them.

Status: online 		My boys will not have their ears pierced as long as they are under my roof.

My stepson's mother wanted to have his done when he was 4. My husband told her she could do it, but it would be coming out at Daddy's house. She didn't do it.

Status: offline 		My oldest DS did the piercing thing... I can't remember if the younger one did or not. It only lasted a short time, he (or both of them) let it grow back together when it didn't get a big reaction.

Tattoos on the other hand are so permenant! What I told my boys was that the only Tat they could have while living under my roof was one that had a heart with MOM in it... they didn't go for it, not sure why . I do know the youngest has one now. He's 30, I guess it's up to him. Can't say I like it, but by this time it is not my choice!

Oh I see.

Fact is, that it was his mother's idea. There are still a few ppl who think boys' earrings are a sort of rebellion on their part against the older generation, but actually in many cases it's one or both of the parents' idea.

Thnx. And interesting that you seem to associate being 'mothering' with the 'clean' earlobe look for boys. I guess that there are some moms out there also who are very mothering and also happen have taken their sons to have their ears done.

No big deal if they want to, I guess, taking them to have them done properly. (Especially if a boy will possibly go behind one's back and do it with a dirty needle in front of a mirror; in these days of diseases, I guess that is an increasing consideration, as well.)

I guess when you are disobedient, you generally do it in secret though.

Yes, that's why it may just be best to take them and have it done hygienically when they ask (within reason!! lol) rather that risk them doing their own dirty needle-in-the-washroom job.

Well, I can't agree with that.

If one of my sons, as a grown man living on his dime not mine, were to get his ear pierced, I would not care. I can't be sure of course, but I probably wouldn't say a word to them about it.

Of course it's the parent's call. You are absolutely right. And the young person also needs to understand that no means no, if that's the case.

There is still a point to considering if the boy is likely to go do it behind the parent's back and risk an infection (not a good idea, with all the diseases about), some parents would weigh up whether on balance the sensible and moderate thing is to let their son also, in a hygienic and clean environment, have done what maybe many of his friends at school and in the church youth group have already had done.

Only that parent can make that call, of course.

Status: online 		That seems to follow with the logic that kids/teens are going to have sex no matter what you say, so you might as well just put them on the pill, so they can do it "safely". Or as some parents think...kids/teens are going to drink, so I might as well supply it to them here at home, so I can make sure they are safe.

It's a parenting philosophy my husband and I totally disagree with, as do many on this forum, I believe. We don't just allow our children to do something we don't want them to do, just so they don't get hurt if they decide to disobey.

ETA...Connie, we crossposted. And I do agree, it is up to the parents to decide and then follow through. It just seems the OP isn't getting why some would say 'no' on this topic.
