Too funny, Edwin. That's egg-zactly what I told Mr. Egghead himself. He insists it's a genuine compliment. I guess I have to take his word for it.

It is a complement, just not the one you want.

More like not the one I was expecting, based on the level of interest shown. I'm okay with it, though. I have a new friend. Can't beat that.

So we're thinking "good egg" is the female version of "nice guy?"
Not at all. My grandmother was as likely to say "He is a good egg" as "She is a good egg." It seemed to apply to both genders equally.

I don't like eggs. They're slimey.
Either you are starting with rotten eggs or you are not cooking them correctly.

I also think it applies to both genders equally. And it is a genuine compliment. It was just, in this case, the timing and delivery of the comment made it seem equal to being a "nice guy". It's all good, though. The "complimentor" is a good egg too.

What are your likely thoughts of a woman if you were to use this expression to describe her? Thanks!

That she is a good person, a good heart.

Hmm... not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I'm gonna go with good.

Whoever said that it was the equivilant of "nice guy" is probably right. If it's coming from a guy you're interested in it's probably not a place you want to be in. It's like being called a good friend.

Would you mind elaborating on the context more?

I don't really need to further analyze it. It's a done deal. He's dating someone other than me. And I'm completely okay with that. God's got other plans for me... like winning the lottery or something.

Besides why is being a good friend a place I don't want to be in? I am a good friend. I am where I am.

btw, is that you in your avatar?

The problem with being a good egg is that you can be totally fried and still be a good egg....

Anyone else have a craving for a nice cheesy omelette this morning, followed up with a piece of cheesecake? Yum.

I would forgo the omelet and just dive into the cheesecake. iwill's avatar looks sinfully delicious!

But back to the OP:
The "good egg/bad egg" thing was used in the original Willy Wonka movie when Veruca Salt and her father went down the garbage chute.

I sometimes use "good egg" in reference to someone when I am trying to be even nerdier than I regularly am. It's an outdated expression though - - the appropriate response to being called "a good egg" is to come back with "and you're the cat's pajamas!"
