Normal.

Biruk used to leak milk out his nose while he was nursing as a newborn.

totally normal. In fact make sure you clean and dry her neck well daily because this can cause some pretty bad neck fold rashes with some babies that tend to "leak" a lot.

How much should a baby who is 9 months on solids 3 times a day be eating?

as much as he wants....which could be every 3 to 4 hours. At that age...85% to 95% of their calories still needs to be breastmilk or formula.

At each feeding of solids...they technically only need 1 tsp per food group per year they are old (which means at 9 months...1 tsp or less of each food group they are eating)...or until they are satisfied with it.

But technically...they should still be nursing every 3 to 4 hours.

I think back then I was nursing 6 times a day or more, so that sounds about right, but he was eating waaaayyy more then just a teaspoon of solids per food group. I'd mix a large jar of applesauce with baby oatmeal and that was one of his meals; I think he was getting 3 or 4 of those size meals a day by then.

Times I have nursed today? Zero. For the first time in over 15 months. Obviously I'm not ready to called him weaned yet, but I'm still ready to dance the jitterbug.

Yeah, I know that sounds awful, but I'm proud of myself, and more then ready for a break in nursing. There's still plenty of challenges yet ahead, but I feel good about what I've done, and I think we're both ok with stopping now.

It doesn't sound awful at all. 15 months is nothing to be ashamed of, that's for sure!

I nursed in public TWICE today. woohoo!!!

I also have fallen in love with a pacifier. Yesterday was HORRENDOUSLY hard on all of us. Today was SUPER awesome because she passy'd herself with the pacifier and not me. We were able to go out and run errands for 4 hrs after her follow up appt today.

She's gained 7 oz in 5 days from my milkies!!! He said 1 oz a day is the goal and she's doing great.

Nursing rocks.

Ryanne, thats exactly how I feel.

AND we had company over, a coworker of mine stopped by for a few hours and we had a good visit. She loves babies and is sooo super comfy with them that I totally trust her with my little one. She didn't even bat an eye when I asked if it was ok to nurse in front of her. She was like , is it ok to be interested to see how you do it? It was a cool show and tell and Isabel was perfect.

Tomorrow another friend is coming over and I'm looking forward to it.

We were so stupid to isolate ourselves this last week. SO STUPID. We should have had friends over before and gone out and done stuff.

I almost had to nurse in the waiting area for the bathroom/nursing room. That was not looking fun but I was so ready and getting everything pulled together from her diaper bag.

The nursing room.. a changing table, sink and glider.. was very clean. But I could have used a toilet!!

ETA:

YAYAY!!!

The lady who is still breastfeeding her 8-year old child is on the Tyra show today...

(I don't normally watch that show, I just happened to leave it on that channel, and see her talking about it)

Yay Brandy!

Yolanda is it the same lady from somewhere in Great Britain who had an older daughter who nursed too. Someone linked us to the YouTube video.

Lots of folks stay home in the very beginning, don't feel bad about it. But congratulations on your nursing successes! That's wonderful.

Nathan is asleep for his nap with no nursing. Daddy will put him down for bedtime. I'm feeling pretty good. He's still clingy and grouchy sometimes, but he's also a toddler, and he wants what he wants. I think he's also going through a growth spurt and maybe needs a bit more sleep.

I'm not really watching it, it's just on. Most people that have spoken aren't against bfing, just not until 8 years old

Yes, Christina, same lady

Brandy, I'm so glad things are going well for you! Sounds like you're a bit like me...I do better with people around me after I have a baby.

Soooo....I am definately not crunchy enough to go for breastfeeding until 8 yo.

Maybe because in this culture chidlren are sexualized so early and sex is all over the place. It makes me uncomfortable just to think about it.

I don't know if it has anything to do with being crunchy or over-sexualized. It sounds like BFing would be an unhealthy attachment at that point.

Certainly there's nothing I can put my finger on, but it just feels creepy. (And I am not one of those people who thinks ill of those who nurse toddlers.)

Having an 80 pound 8 year old...it gives me the creeps to think of him climbing into my lap to nurse. Yuck!

Here's how it plays out to me in my mind as a relatively new nursing mom...

As an infant, they need your milk for life support. As they get older it changes to include comfort after a booboo and down time for bed time etc.

At some point all kids realize they have private parts. My concern is at what point do your private parts as a mom/wife become PRIVATE again? Like what age is the cut off?

And maybe that means that I have been lead into believing the over sexualization idea. But I know for myself, I was having regular periods at 9 so I can't imagine my level of awareness at 8 allowing nursing to still be an option.

Most kids by 10 or 11 months try to pull mom's shirt up in Wal-Mart and loudly ask for teetee, boobaas, nummies, or whatever they're called. That's when you start teaching them that mom has private parts too. That doesn't have to be the end of nursing, but you still start teaching boundaries and socially acceptable behavior.

I personally would not nurse past 3 years. My preference. I don't find it weird until after 4, I guess, depending on the child.

Hannah is almost 3.5. She showers with me sometimes, but only because she is a girl. I don't mind her seeing me naked, where the boys that stops around 2. She nursed until she was 2.5, so it's been almost a year since she nursed. I *still* have to remind her that my boombies are MY boombies and she may not just touch them.

At her age, she is so verbal and so stinking smart that it would seem really odd to nurse her. She's very much past the baby/toddler stage. That stage will be different with different kids though, IME.
