Nathan hated any time of carrier/sling until he was old enough to look out. You're not the only one whose baby didn't like to be "worn" like that.

I know some women who essentially forced their children to accept babywearing (with many tears) just so they could have some hands free.

Ruth, are you having a bad day?

You don't have to "force" your child to like being worn, but there are ALOT of options out there besides a Bjorn and Infantino ring sling that can be tried. If Emily wants babywearing to work, not just to have her hands free but for the developmental and bonding benefits then there is nothing wrong with someone suggesting a different type of carrier might work better.

There are HUNDREDS of carriers, and each one has it's pro's and con's.

I second the Moby Wrap idea. I didn't cook with him in there (except prepping food) and I couldn't load the dishwasher with him in there, but sweeping, mopping, vaccuuming, folding laundry were all things I could do with him in there.

LOL, that reminds me of something I forgot to tell you ladies the other day. For the first time ever I attempted to take a shower with both kids awake and no hubby home. It was breakfast time, so I put them in their highchairs with breakfast on their trays in the bathroom with me. And, guess what? They both screamed the whole time! Timmy wanted to "taya bat" with me, and Jimmy threw his breakfast on the floor. Little stinkers! So, yeah I guess I'll just wait for the evening when Robert is home. LOL!

LoL! Gabby is kind of annoying, she refuses to leave the shower curtain alone and is very particular about how she wants it to be so anytime I move it, or brush against it she immediately puts it back how it was. Usually this results in the floor being soaked but at least I can shower before noon when she goes for a nap.

Hannah and Levi both hated the sling. Levi loved the Moby and would sleep forever in there. I wish I had one of those with Hannah...she was my one that needed to be held all the time!

Who would really like a sling anyway? I wouldn't want to be just dangling and the majority of the ones you buy like at Target or Walmart don't fit the mother or the baby properly. Gabby liked the ring sling, and she adored the Baby K'tan(like a moby) and now she gets excited when she sees the Beco or Micah's carrier.

Nope. Having a good day actually. But I have talked to other women whose baby didn't like being worn, and that's exactly what they said the me, that they made the baby accept it.

I have nothing against babywearing; I think it's a great thing. Didn't work to well for Nathan, but I hope to try again with the next baby.

I use the pack n' play to put Nathan in during shower time. He's used to it, and has some nice toys in there.

Levi did sometimes fight the Moby, but that was because he knew once he was in it, he'd fall asleep...and he had other plans. This was at about 4-8 months though, and usually in public when he would object, because he wanted to see all that was going on. But I needed him to nap because he would get cranky if he didn't, so in he went.

I've researched the Moby, and it doesn't look like the one for me - to complex, especially since I'm having the baby in winter and I'll have a toddler.

But I'm looking at some other options, and I'll definitely be lurking the the Babywearing thread once I get closer to my due date.

I gave up having a bath/shower during the day after my ds was born. I started taking it in the evening, or even very late at night - and have kept to that ever since!

This lady has done a wonderful Moby Wrap "How to" on YouTube - doesn't look too difficult at all!

The Moby can look intimidating, but once you do it a couple/few times, it's really not hard.

Ruth, when you're ready, come on over to that thread and let us know what kind of things you're looking for. I'm sure you'll get some great recommendations.

I second Yolanda. Slings (IMHO) are uncomfortable and way too squishy. The boy is so big, a sling may just be too snug for him. I would say try a wrap. If you don't have the money to buy one, one of us could make you one. (I sure would)
Sandy

And if you have any chest at all, it makes things even squishier in there. Chase was all squished and bent sideways, and his head was tucked in, he just didn't like it. But he loved this hold the best.
Now that he's bigger, he likes this hold (with legs out)

eta...your pm box is full...can't send you the link

Mary never really did like that first hold; however I do put her in the other one you show and she LOVES it! With the first she couldn't see anything except my neck. BLAH. So I flipped her around so she can see the world!

Yes the Moby can look too comlicated, but I was able to get it down in just a few attempts. And now I love it!

But is that any worse than putting a baby in the swing even if he hates it, or his bouncy chair, or letting him cry in a playpen, or doing CIO??--all of those are forcing a baby to accept something he really doesn't want. I'm not much for forcing babies to do anything (gentle training, yes, but if it gets to purple-faced screaming, I usually drop the idea and try something else), but if a mom needs hands free for sanity and getting the basics of living done, and her baby wants to be held *only* a certain way and nothing else will do, one way or another, the kid is going to end up having to accept that she can't hold him that way every minute of the day.

I'm not pickin' on ya'. Just thinking with my fingers.

OK--we must be a weird mama-baby pair. Biruk and I loved the basic pouch sling I made. He didn't mind at all being folded up and squished. When he got bigger he could still lie sideways, if I pulled one arm free out the bottom. And now it's useful for carrying him on my back. I like my faux-moby, but the basic sling has been by far the easiest and most convenient.

lol. No, I'm just neurotic.

I feel physically terrible if I nap during the day, so that's out. And I've gotten good at swift cleaning so I usually do end up with plenty of time for my computer fix as well.

We only have an umbrella stroller so we can't use that yet. It is too hot here to spend much time outside anyway. I don't have access to a car during the day so we can't go for a drive. He hates his swing. He will sit in his bouncy seat only if I am bouncing him with my foot the whole time.

I think he is going through a growth spurt. He will be 3 weeks tomorrow. He wants to eat and be held constantly. Chris doesn't have to work tomorrow so hopefully we will have an enjoyable long weekend.

Ryanne- are you still planning to make me a k'tan?

You would not BELIEVE how many jobs you can get done whilst jiggling a bouncy seat! Maybe you would, lol. The bouncy seat totally saved my life with my first child - I managed to wash dishes, iron, dust (moving the bouncy seat around with me as I went). I jiggled his seat so much that even after he was down to sleep in the evening, and I was sitting down watching TV, my foot would still jiggle (even though the chair was not there, lol). You can even take the bouncy chair into the toilet with you, and jiggle it with your foot while you are sat on the loo!

Eventually, I wangled it so that I could bounce him a dozen times, then do some cooking, then run back and jiggle him again, then do a bit more, until it was all time. Madness, but worth it!

Funnily enough, my ds didn't like the bouncy chair at all! I was so surprised. But she loved her car seat, and spent a lot of time in that (and I mean in the house, at church etc)

Emily - Definitely there are things you can do while bouncing the seat. The first thing that came to mind was folding laundry and since you are still during recovery that is perfect. You can sit, bouncy, and fold. I remember feeling like I was never able to put Hunter down and I was talking to my mom one day. She told me to think of it from the baby's point of view. He had been inside my safe, warm, secure womb for 40 weeks and then all of sudden he is thrust into a totally different environment. So, being in my arms made him feel that way again and until he got use to this new environment he was going to need me to hold him. It helped, not to say that I still didn't at times wish he would just be content to be placed in his bed, swing, or floor. It just helped me realize why he might possibly need to be held.

I deleted a few pms.

The first 2 weeks he was sleeping great and didn't need to be held all the time. It has just started this week. My mom came over today and watched him for an hour so I could go to the post office and Wal-Mart. She said he was awake and happy the whole time. He took a bottle from her. As soon as I got home he heard my voice and cried until she handed him to me.

Also, does he have a rocker? You can put him in that for a while too, even if he cries. So long as he can see you and hear you, he will be ok.

Yep I was going to ask that too, thats what my kids go in. And like we have said, he may cry the first few minutes, of course its not as good as mummy's arms, give him some time to get used to things before you panic. It's OK if he cries a little.

What you're describing is very, very normal. He has left the sleepy all the time newborn stage and is on to bigger and better things. Every transition will be a bit of adjustment for both of you and you can expect a big transition every couple months at least. Basically, by the time you settle into a routine, he'll change it on you.

And Levi will STILL be fine when I leave him, but the second he hears my voice, he falls apart. They need us...I try to focus on the good aspects of that. Yes, it is good to have time away fr
