Now I realize that is technically a movie question, however it is a question specifically aimed at women though. I got this idea from the other thread that I started about Commercials Aimed At Women.

When you go to a movie labeled a romantic comedy, do you laugh? Because most of the romantic comedies that I have seen never appeared all that funny to me at all, and yet I have heard that women have said that some movies were hysterical!

The one movie that comes to mind is "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". While I enjoyed that film, I didn't find it all that particularly funny at all, however I have heard that women found it really funny!

So I was just wondering if it is just that men do not get it at all but women do instead?

What? You didn't think her comment about being a snow beast wasn't hysterical?

There is a differance in what women find funny and men find funny. Guys like things that have to do with gasses released from body parts, for example. They guys roll in laughter, the women roll their eyes.

I watched Grumpier Old Men last night. I laughed out loud, m'love fell asleep.

Personally I find romantic comedies "cute" but rarely funny. I generally like either flat-out drama or flat-out comedy. It doesn't always have to include fladgelence to be funny.

Yes Car2ner, and to be honest, your post over in the women's commercial thread was the inspiration for this one as well.

I don't remember anything particular about "My Big Fat Greek Wedding', but I do remember that it was one of the funniest movies I had seen in a long time.

Thanks, we found a movie yesterday that we both laughed at... didn't catch the name of it, it was about a guy named G who ended on a home shopping network. Really light comedy. I call these Potato Chip movies, fun but no substance, like potato chips.

I'm really not a fan of romantic comedies. They are really, like really trite, IMHO. Some are funny, some are sleepers for sure. I think it takes a certain personality to like or dislike a romantic comedy, and definately a certain perspective. I don't find romantic comedies all that great. But, I'm sure there have been a few that were all right.

I love romantic comedies! Sometimes I laugh so hard I cry. Most recent I saw was 27 Dresses. Awesome funny movie!

Yet, I don't understand why men don't like them (well most men).

I don't like most romantic comedies but I loooved My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Why? Because my family is just like that.

I can sooo see my cousins taking the mickey out of my future groom. Or my great aunt talking about the time she swears up and down that she dated Prince Charles.

Generally I don't laugh a whole lot during movies that are labeled "Romantic Comedy." Most of those just seem sweet, so I smile and go "awwwww" a lot.

However I died laughing at My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The scene where the bride's family arranged this elaborate dinner and the groom's family showed up with a lone bundt cake just cracked me up. But my boyfriend laughed a lot, too. So that doesn't really fit into the women/men generality.

....... I love romantic comedies.... and yes... I laugh while I watch them...

Why do I laugh? Because I can identify with the craziness that is portrayed in them...

My life is crazy... sometimes it's like watching me on the big screen...

this is the secret of humor: at some level you have to relate or it isn't funny. If it hits too close to home it isn't funny. It has to hit that sweet spot.

When I hit a hard time in my life relationship-wise, I boycotted romantic comedies. I just didn't want to see them. Now things are peachy-keen. Bring themm on.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maria Portokalos: Ian, are you hungry?
Ian Miller: Uh no, I already ate.
Maria Portokalos: Okay, I make you something.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maria Portokalos: Nicko! Don't play with the food! When I was your age, we didn't have food!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aunt Voula: What do you mean he don't eat no meat?
[the entire room stops, in shock]
Aunt Voula: Oh, that's okay. I make lamb.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maria Portokalos: Toula, on my wedding night, my mother, she said to me, "Greek women, we may be lambs in the kitchen, but we are tigers in the bedroom."
Toula Portokalos: Eww. Please let that be the end of your speech.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gus Portokalos: You know, the root of the word Miller is a Greek word. Miller come from the Greek word "milo," which is mean "apple," so there you go. As many of you know, our name, Portokalos, is come from the Greek word "portokali," which mean "orange." So, okay? Here tonight, we have, ah, apple and orange. We all different, but in the end, we all fruit.

and my favorite...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Toula Portokalos: Ma, Dad is so stubborn. What he says goes. "Ah, the man is the head of the house!"
Maria Portokalos: Let me tell you something, Toula. The man is the head, but the woman is the neck. And she can turn the head any way she wants.

Are these not hilarious?!?!

Now was it a good movie? Us men, while we might enjoy some romantic comedies, we just do not see the humor in them per say is all.

I wanted to see 27 dresses, but it zoomed in and out of the theatres. would "Made of Honour" be classified as a romantic comedy?

My view of romantic comedies - you have to be able to identify with or relate to it; if not it doesn't appeal to me.

That's just my view.

that is pretty much too of all comedy. If it doesn't touch you on a personally at some level, it won't be funny. It tells you something about a person when you see what they laugh at, just as much as what makes them upset.

Another guy here!Sorry, but I just don't know what the big deal is with romantic comedies or 'chick flicks'.I personally have really enjoyed plenty. How can one NOT associate with so many of these situations?Even if life sucks(pardon),how can you NOT laugh at some of these things, funny is funny........Sorry to say this, but too many people are just so uptight, that I don't see how they exist!Unfortunately,(the way I see it) too many men are not secure enough in their sexuality/masculinity,this is why so many have a complex about watching 'girlish' movies. It's sad, sensitivity has been driven out of most men,it scares the life out of them.Folks,REAL-LIFE ROMANCE,IS FUNNY!!!!!And sensitivity is MANLY!By the way, when is the last time your man carried your purse around the store while you shopped for a dress?Oooh, this would be a good thread.....
