What I would like to see is more options in family cars (6+ passengers). It doesn't look like anything is being developed for larger families in terms of electric/hybrid cars or even better gas mileage. I'm not looking for a huge engine or great pick up. I'd really like some better options.
Toyota Highlander, Ford Escape, Chevy Tahoe all are made in hybrid models.

I am clueless as to how exactly the hybrid cars work. I do love the toyota highlanders!

I'm not very educated on them either, but basically they have both a gas and electric motor...using one or the other, or both, at different points to maximize fuel economy.

Is their a price difference between gas companies.
The dearest company in London and possibly across UK is BP the cheapest is usually at supermarkets pumps. Do people shop around for cheaper gas.

Here in my area there are 3 Lassus stations within 12 miles of each other and typically the price gets cheaper the farther away from the freeway you get. Thankfully the cheapest one is closest to me and often is in a bit of a gas war with the station next door, typically anywhere from 3 to 9 cents cheaper!

There are two petrol stations close to where I work Esso and Q8, about 300 yards apart, the Q8 is always 2pence dearer than Esso, Shell about a 1/4 of a mile away is even cheaper.

The gas prices are really hurting a lot of people in our area. But what can you do? You still have to get to work and go places. I don't know what the breaking point is, but there are a lot of people that are starting to get close to it. I'm so thankful that my husband doesn't have a 45 minute commute to work anymore.

I drive at least 1000 miles/month for work, often closer to 1200 miles. Thankfully my company pays me for mileage- if they didn't I probably couldn't afford to work. I still see plenty of people driving big cars/trucks in the middle of the day with only 1 person in them though.
I would love to be able to bike or use public transportation, but the bus system in Phoenix is terrible and drivers are crazy enough to make biking dangerous, although I've known a few people who do it.
The pictures of Amsterdam make me remember the time I spent in Denmark. Mass transit and bikes were the norm- the family I lived with didn't even own a car.

If those folks are parents - it could be that they just dropped he kids at school and are running to the grocery store to get a few things, drop the books by the library and run a couple errands before going back to school for afternoon pick up. If it were me you saw that's likely what it would be, except for the dropping off the kids because they catch the bus most of the time.
And then there are days that I don't go ANYWHERE - Man I love those days!

Well, I have cut back on my driving because of the prices. We are up at $4.00 a gallon here so gas is now like liquid gold. I had to get a locking gas cap because one day I started out with a full tank, and ended with an almost empty tank. My gas light even went on and I KNOW I filled it.
DH works 45 miles away and so he has to drive. He does work from home whenever possible though. That is good because pretty soon he is going to have to look for either another job or we are going to have to move and our moving options are very limited.

I've thought of that...it is a LOT of people though. Men and women, and lots of them on the freeway as opposed to surface streets. I don't see too many people carpooling during rush hours either come to think of it.

I am sad to belive the gas will not be going down and we as adults will have to made tough choices. Frist I really do not under stand why we have not cut back to a 4 day work week as the govt(think how much we save school buses,post offices,other govetmnet useds) did in the 80 School 4 day a week add add on the time at the begining and end. It really was not a bad thing we had time to be with the family . Now it would made large company think how more could work from home 1.000 of people drive to work just to do phone and computer work. Church have to go to one service a day, ( It made for great fellowship, ) we had services in the morning and then stay over for youth children activies till early evening some time we have small local group meeting in the home most could walk or only drive a few block. our church grew because of this outreach) and I think people who boat are out lawed a wast of gas . if again we all would go this as a sign to the oil countries that we as people would made a few changes. Aslso I know we have Belive me we have been using these steps for almost 5 years now as we truned to coolege when from 50.000 a year to 10.000 4 job to 1 FT 2 PT betwen us. God was Good and we lreaned to save and made do with what we were given! As I really feel will have to come around to for the year or two to come as in food and gas prices!

Prices won't go down. I believe they will continue to go higher. We will probably catch up with Europe ($7 - $10 per gallon). The days of fair economics regarding fuel prices are gone for good.
Oil companies are still posting record profits and are doing their best to mask that from the public eye. Black gold is the commodity that will make or break national economies and cripple the middle class and poor in our country.
Rumor has it that gas will be up to $5 a gallon by the 4th of July.

Here in northeast/Baltic Europe we're paying $1.65/L or about $6.23/gallon... and that being in our little city of 12,000. It's even more in the real cities.
Oh, and our inflation has been nearly 20% this year. Last month our electricity went up 40% in one month. I'm not saying "don't complain", but just that it is really all over the world. It's crazy.

Average gas prices in our area here in in FL are about $4.05 a gallon and doesn't seem to be coming down any time soon. I heard on the news the other day that one of the factors contributing to the rising fuel costs is the tremendous demand from China. Apparantly they are the world's top consumer of oil and we (the U.S.) come in second. China is consuming a lot right now because of their weather related catastrophies.
I think if this "crisis" doesn't cause our lawmakers to approve of drilling in Alaska and elsewhere, it is a shame on them and they must be out of touch with the average American. This is one of those debates where we must ask ourselves, "Do we save the spotted owl while Americans suffer"?? We need to tap into our natural resources, despite what is politically correct at the moment.
I like reading a different perspective, like the above poster from the Baltics. It is so true, and the gas situation here in the U.S. is a prime example, we don't even realize how we are so blessed as a nation until we compare ourselves with the rest of the world. I think I heard a statistic that if you count yourself as a homeowner, you are one of only 30% worldwide. I think that's right. Anyway, we have cars, cell phones, lattees, pensions, rights, access to good health care, and the list could go on... We are so blessed!
Sometimes we can get spoiled by our richness. Now, I do realize it is a strain on just about everyone; but if put into a broader perspective... it balances out somehow.

I am all for drilling in our own country, but the problem is that the special interest groups get on the lawmakers and they want to be re elected and they know that if they anger a large group or two, that will be the end of their time in office. BUT, I also read that even if they did drill for oil here in the U.S. we still don't have enough refineries to make it into gas so they still won't be able to keep up with production. AND OPEC came out a few weeks ago and said it was the investors and speculators who were driving up the prices of oil by their trades tactics. I think we are just going to have to get used to it or walk. But I have been doing more walking.

Is it usually that high? When I first started driving 6 years ago gas cost me .52/L I wish it was still that cheap! 
We live on the total opposite side of the city from my husbands work so he has a lot of driving to do everyday. We tried finding a rental close to his work, but had no luck. We bought a place that is 10 minutes from his workplace that we are moving into at the end of the year. We are both looking forward to saving tons of money on gas... and our mortgage will be $300 cheaper than we are paying for a rental.
