BerianAardvark -> RE: Can Christians have non Christian friends? (5/10/2008 2:56:09 PM)

In my experience, true friendships are based upon mutual interests. Is it possible for a Christian to have interests, hobbies and so on that are not, strictly speaking Christian? There are things that are are spiritually neutral, lets take bowling as an example. There is nothing in scripture that forbids (or demands) bowling , so making friends with people based upon a mutual interest in bowling is not something that is forbidden...indeed many churches sponsor bowling teams. BUT if bowling begins to "take over" my life, then it is forbidden to ME because it is in danger of becoming an idol, something I value more than God. That does not make it sinful to everyone, but it certainly makes it sinful for me to continue. The same is true with everything, including friendships and even things normally considered to be Christian...the Pharisees were so into following the Letter of the Law that they neglected the Spirit of the Law, and it became an idol to them, so that when the fulfillment of the Law came on the scene they couldn't recognize it when it was right in front of them. Friendships, sometimes even those with other Christians can reach a point where they are in danger of becoming a stumbling block to us or to those around us. So, in brief, yes we can have non-Christian friends, but those friendships will, of necessity, be limited because the most important thing in our lives (our relationship with God and Our Saviour) is not even a blip on their radar screen...hence the deepest levels of friendship, the ones based upon what is most important in our lives, is closed to them.
