I like the results of the self propelled better. Plus it gives me the exercise I need. I also enjoy the time it takes to mow because I can use it to think. Yes, I agree. I had a very good time Tuesday praying.

ORIGINAL: fluffmonkey we have 4 acres that needs to be mowed we have riding ones lol I do too (riding lawn mowers, that is)! They have 4 legs, pointy ears, long manes and tails...of course, I have to supplement their efforts with the tractor, but they also double as lawn ornaments and automatic fertilizers. I do have to be very careful about their use around producing fruit trees, certain flowers and other plants and gardens... Actually I enjoy yard work and all that goes with it. What I need is some way to keep the house clean so that I can handle everything outside. Re. using a push-mower on acreage...when I first bought my property, I mowed 5 acres with a push mower every 4-6 weeks. I did not rake said property. It usually took about a week, working a couple of hours each evening to get the whole thing done.

I love my big yard. I like cutting grass. I do prefer a yard full of trees instead of lawn but lawn is what we have, and a nice stand of trees in the back yard. My dog runs around in the backyard. We have our grill back there and smoke things and make our nieghbors jealous. Our front yard is big enough that we can sit on our front patio and have a little privacy. It is all good. (pics in the link below) What I don't understand is why people by McMansions. Huge houses on no land. I don't want to be able to reach through my bathroom window and shake hands with my neighbor through their window.

My hubby wants to put in a big brick grill/fire pit for entertaining. We have the space for it so it will be something that we will work for. What I want to do first though is put up a privacy fence, but that will be a costly project so it will take time to accomplish.

We are still trying to sell our house with the nice yard. The house we just signed a lease on and will be moving into, has a nice big backyard that goes right up to a pond. There is a huge oak tree that keeps the backyard cool and shady (and sandy, grass won't grow in the shade). We do have a grassy front yard and I hope to plant some rosemary there. It smells so good. We are leasing because we won't buy while we have a house on the market. One thing we take into consideration is how much land is around the house. I don't mind doing the yard work. To me it is something I get to do, not have to do.

I'm allergic to plants and I can't even water flowers, so if I ever have a big yard then it will be someone else's job to take care of it. LOL

ORIGINAL: RepentanceIsRequired Big yards are over rated because you have to mow them. True, if you have a big lawn. Have you ever looked at THIS? If you design your property with lots of self sustaining areas that will feed your family as well as being relatively care free, you won't have nearly as much work to do. I love to do any kind of yard work except mowing and weed wacking. Fortuantely I have a dh and a son who both like to tool around on the lawn tractor, as well as many mowers of the 4-legged variety.
