I am as conservative as they come and I still think that shirt is blatantly racist.
I live in TX and I still hear black people called apes, monkeys or chimps thats why that shirt is wrong. If black people were never called those names then it wouldn't be racist but they are called those names.
I have never heard of another race referred to in thay way. Ever.

Some of my ancestors were referred to in that way in Victorian England.
In much of the pseudo-scientific literature of the day the Irish were held to be inferior, an example of a lower evolutionary form, closer to the apes than their "superiors", the Anglo-Saxons . No one is "hanging on to it" Recognizing it and confronting it is what is going on. If no one calls the racist on their actions, history could repeat itself..we could go backwards. Moving forward means dealing honestly with issues, not pretending they don't exist.

You should go to NY or NJ. It's not only blacks, but Italians, Spaniards, French, Germans, Irish,and on and on. Pretty much everyone but the blacks have gotten over the names, even joke about it. The Italians and Irish were particularly hated when they immigrated, but they got over it. For a long time, most mobsters in the movies and tv have been Italian. In order for race relations to ever progress, both sides have to give a little. It can't be all one-sided and it can't only be whites who are racist.
As for the tee shirts, I haven't seen either of them (I lead a sheltered life  ). I think they are both probably in poor taste, but worth getting our undies in a knot? I'm sure some think so, (principle, don't you know), but I don't, for whatever that may be worth.

All this over a cartoon shirt while children in the U.S. are shot for being black. All I see are really screwed up priorities by people it seems who would not know reality if it came up, slapped them in the face and called them by name.

Somebody makes a T-shirt with Obama depicted as a monkey and black folks are just oversensitive. Poor fella who made the shirt dint mean nothing by it. Get over it.
Obama makes a statement about some people he met in Pennsylvania being "bitter" and clinging to stuff, and the ENTIRE white race takes offense because that statement proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Obama hates white people. EVEN white people who live in California and never owned a gun in their life assumed Obama was specifically ridiculing them and will be forever scarred by his insensitive unpatriotic, racist remarks. Some people here still haven't gotten over the "bitter" comments.
Now watch. There are white people (male and female) who grew up in the south who've been called "honey" and "sweetie" and "sugar" all their lives by everyone from the Waffle House waitress to their bosses and never raised an eyebrow, who will now swear they've been offended by Obama calling a reporter "sweetie", and this was an insult to all white women (and white men who want to be white women). So now, in addition to being racist, unpatriotic, marxist, elitist (i.e., uppity)....we can now add, SEXIST.
But who am I to criticize, I'm just a ....

Historically, the race, country, whatever, that has the most power views itself as superior. It has been this way since civilization began. Examine the views posed by the ancient Egyptians, the Romans, the Saxons, etc. Racism is a by-product of power. Here in America the power base has shifted considerably in the past 40 years. I think racism on the whole has been reduced significantly, but the media has a fascination with sensationalizing any conflict and making it appear more than it really is. That does not excuse racism at all, but this slant is aggravating the situation and pushing us backwards in the healing process.

One of the most racist people I've ever been around are Japanese. They claim that Koreans and Chinese are distinctly inferior in appearance and intellect...

Yeah, I think it’s extremely sad that in this day age, such a thing isn’t seen as the epitome of racism, which it is. Indeed, this is the essence of racism, the depiction of certain groups of people as being less than people – and it should be seen as believers as an affront not only to blacks, but an offense to God Himself because it depicts those made in his image as common animals. It borders on the demonic.
It rather saddens me that those who strongly disagree with Obama politically (of whom I’m one) can’t rally to his defense as a person, and strongly condemn in no uncertain words people who would do such a thing. It’s shameful, ignorant, and repugnant, and that man should be held up as an example of the worst of us.
Unfortunately, in this day and age the personal and political are seen as one and the
same, and so this is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Now that you've heard that some people feel it's offensive, might you encourage or discourage your grandson from referring to black people as apes? Should you hear him say it, might you chastise him, educate him, or ignore it. I'm not saying that he did or that you did.
