He looks HUGE compared to my little one!!!

Em, Gwen's got CRAZY neck control as well. I have a hard time burping her because she fights against my hand

I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better - it really does feel great to know that you're covered in prayer, eh?

My midwives were wonderful. If I would have had him in the hospital I probably would have ended up with an episiotomy and a forceps or vacuum delivery. It was a difficult labor and delivery and was more painful than I ever would have imagined, but I am glad I decided to have him at home assited by the 3 people I am closest to and 2 women that I trusted very much.

Your birth story is very similar to my first birth story. I know that I would have ended up with a C-section if I had been in the hospital with my first. I also remember being at one point during my labor and asking, "Can we stop for awhile so I can have a nap, and then pick up where we left off later?"

I think some home birth advocates tend to minimize the pain in birth. I've read material that says things like, "Contractions aren't painful, it's just pressure." I know birth is amazing and miraculous, but I think some people think that a home birth is just floating in euphoria and it's not. It's hard work. It's worth it, but it's not easy.

On the bright side, you should have an easier time with the next baby you have. My first one was very stuck, and he was only 8 lbs. My next baby was 11 1/2 lbs, and although she was stuck too, she was born much easier than my first. The rest were much easier. With some of them the contractions were harder, with others they were not as difficult. Every birth experience you have will be different. Just because this one was one way doesn't mean that other births you have will be the same way.

Congratulations on your new baby. He's adorable!

When they get stuck it certainly is a lot more painful. Jacob's delivery was by far the hardest delivery of all. Those 26 mins of pushing (especially the 2 or 3 minutes of stuckness) felt longer than the 2hrs of pushing with my first, that's for sure!

I would say that until Jacob, my labour and deliveries got slightly easier each time. They were all almost identical really, but the pushing got faster each time. 2 hr with the 1st, 20 mins with the 2nd, 15 mins with the 3rd.

Size didn't depend on birth order.
#1 was 8lbs 1oz
#2 was 7lbs 6oz
#3 was 8lbs 4oz
#4 was 10lbs 8oz

Emily:

Good for you for getting your thread back here.

Your little David is a beautiful boy, and it will be fun to keep up with him as he grows. Our little one is almost 15 weeks and is so different from a newborn. People always said that to me before we had him and I never really gave it much thought: now I see what they mean.

Know that you're being prayed for and that many, many people are wishing your family of 3 God's very best.

Jeanie- I can't believe your baby is almost 15 weeks old already!!

David is a very good baby. He sleeps for about 5 hours at night, wakes up to eat, and sleeps about 2 more hours. I have a newborn and I get at least 6 hours of sleep at night. He will probably have a growth spurt soon and won't sleep for long stretches at night so I am enjoying it now.

Emily -

That's so great -- 5 hours in a row, 2 more and so you get 6 hours of sleep? Oh, that must just feel so heavenly to you right now!! That's just great!

So, tell us....isn't it amazing watching Chris in his first days of fatherhood? Even if he was a "baby person" before, this is HIS SON......isn't it just so cool watching him as he has been transformed into David's dad???

Does David still have his extra belly button cord or has that fallen off yet? He sounds like such a sweet little boy - and so handsome!!!

Chris had never taken care of a baby before. The first 3 days of David's life I couldn't get out of bed except to go to the bathroom and I had to have help to do that. Chris and my mom had to take care of David and do every thing except feed him. Chris learned really quickly. He works from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm so he doesn't get to see David much, but when he does I love watching them together.

David's cord fell off when he was 5 days old.

I think he is handsome too!! Thank you!!

So are you going to share what you ended up with for David's middle name? :)

his middle name is my maiden name

(and it was my husband's idea, but I don't think my in-laws believe that LOL)

This sooo much reminds me of my husband, although my husband is 40 years old and had NEVER changed a diaper, so I hear you on the husbands learning quickly.

That is very cool that you chose David YourMaidenName YourLastName as his name! Did you know that that is commonly done in Norway -- using the mother's maiden name as a middle name? (I happen to know this because my sister's college degree is in Nordic Studies and she lived over there.) I'm glad you two found a middle name you both could agree on.

Forgive me for not remembering, but is Chris' second job going to end in the next few weeks/months, or are his current work hours a little more permanent than that? I hope he is getting some good rest, too. I'm sure you and David are heavily on his mind while he's working.

His first job is from 6:00-3:00. His second job is from 4:00-8:00. He is also working the second job on Saturdays from 6:00-2:00 through the summer. Hopefully we can get our credit cards paid off soon so he can quit the second job.

We are also praying he can find another "real" job that pays more that he actually enjoys. His first job is as a lab technician and he has a degree in political science, so it is not at all what he wants to be doing. It is also 30 minutes from home.

I'm so jealous Gwen wakes up 3 times a night to eat - which I actually don't mind ... it's the interrupted sleep for myself I don't so much enjoy!

David slept last night from 12:00-6:30, woke up and ate 3 oz, then slept from 7:00-10:00. That is pretty typical for him at this point.

I'm not sure we can be friends anymore!!

My midwives did say that once babies are over 10 lbs, they tend to sleep much longer stretches at night. It'll just be a bit before Gwen's there!!

10 pounds seems forever away! My little sweetpea isn't even quite 9 pounds yet. She sleeps ok if she's in bed with us. . .she usually only wakes up a couple of times to eat. . .but she won't sleep for more than 30-45 minutes in her crib. She wakes up easily and can't fall back asleep on her own.
Emily, sounds like David's gonna be one of those "easy" babies. (if there is such a thing)

Don't rely too much on that 10 pound mark. One of my little ones was over 9 pounds at birth and it took her until 30+ pounds to sleep through the night fairly regularly.

Glad to hear he's growing so well, Emily!
