If all parties are submitted to the Lord then all couples are compatible, in theory. I do not necessarily personally think that I agree with this notion though.

The problem is that most are not willing to work 100-200% towards it at all. If even one doesn't do it, then it is likely destined to fail.

I'm not sure if they still do this or not, but when a couple went to get divorced they could claim that the grounds were "incompatibility". Yeah, they call that it irreconcilable differences. Yeah, Thats it! Thanks!

Meaning they should do what ever it takes to stay together. This is exactly right. If you are married you can be 100% compatible with your spouse. In fact it's the only way to live.

I'm going to take it even further. I say NO ONE is compatible, really. I think if you start with that assumption, then you can be more surprised and delighted when you happen to stumble onto similarities you share. If you start your marriage with the assumption, "Oh, we're soooo compatible" then you are just disgusted and horrified and frustrated as life points out your inevitable differences. You get into an awful lot of trouble when you start thinking "But I thought you were just like me." So, no. You're "compatible" with no one. It's only by the grace of God that you'll ever be able to learn to love and live peacably and joyfully with that strange creature who looked so good at the altar. Er, at least, that's how it seems to me.

Er, at least, that's how it seems to me. Your reply is pretty much what I had in mind. Pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hll Church in Seattle said pretty much the same thing in one of his sermons in the series "Christians Gone Wild: 1 Corinthians" (available via podcast): http://media.marshill.org The particular sermon is titled "Divorce and Remarriage," and his comment comes at 51:10. He says, "Every marriage is the combination of two incompatible evildoers." To me, the point being that two fallen human beings' coming together in marriage and becoming one is a huge work of grace by God and is a wondrous mystery. Just considering the differences between male and female --- there's incompatibility!! ;o) So... perhaps compatibility/incompatibility both (1) is ignored too often [we focus on the spiritual to the exclusion of the practical] and (2) is given undue weight [we focus on the practical to the exclusion of the spiritual]. In Christ, we are "compatible" when we humble ourselves and serve one another.* It's that we are all parts of one body, connected by the sinews that are His work on the cross and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. * hat tip to Mark Driscoll
