quote:
Finally, many molecules besides ATP could serve equally well as the common currency for energy in various species (CTP, TTP, UTP, ITP, or any ATP-like molecule with one of the 293 known amino acids or one of the dozens of other bases replacing the adenosine moiety immediately come to mind). Discovering any new animals or plants that contained any of the anomalous examples proffered above would be potential falsifications of common ancestry, but they have not been found. (emphasis added). http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/section1.html quote:
CTP is a high-energy molecule equal to ATP, but its role in the organism is more specific than that of ATP. CTP is used as the source of energy, and as a coenzyme in metabolic reactions like the synthesis of glycerophospholipids and glycosylation of proteins. (emphasis added). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytidine_triphosphate So, in very rare instances, something other than ATP is used for energy. Does this mean that, according to talkorigins, UCD is falsified? Why doesn't talkorigins just shut down their website and admit that UCD, by their standards, has been falsified? Also found this interesting. quote:
Abstract 1. Fatty acid synthesis in isolated intact chromoplasts from [1-14C]acetate was made possible by using ATP, ADP (via adenylate kinase), and, with decreasing efficiency, UTP, CTP, and GTP as energy sources. http://www.springerlink.com/content/j875253108107370/ So, apparently, other things can be used as an energy source (in very specific instance) but ATP is most efficient (in this specific instance).
