humbleinspirit -> The Saddest Songs In Christian Music (5/31/2008 9:55:41 AM)

This coming from the secular thread got me thinking of some Christian songs that are the saddest as well. Most of these are older, but some are:

*For Annie-Petra
*Too Many Lonely People-Denny Correll
*Held-Natalie Grant
*The Other Name-Hoi Polloi
*This Is Your Time-Michael W. Smith

I don't know if this is considered a "sad song" but I would pick Pray For Me - MWS....I always think of this as a sad song, especially when someone breaks up with you...lol

Final_Fantasy_fan -> RE: The Saddest Songs In Christian Music (6/1/2008 1:46:54 PM)

Say Goodbye - Skillet

humbleinspirit -> RE: The Saddest Songs In Christian Music (6/1/2008 4:02:57 PM)

Pray For Me can be considered one.

I thought of another one too:

White Dress-Kenny Marks

Solus -> RE: The Saddest Songs In Christian Music (6/1/2008 9:34:23 PM)

I really don't listen to Christian music. It's all so depressing and in my opinion, annoying.

PhrozenPhoenix -> RE: The Saddest Songs In Christian Music (6/1/2008 10:35:19 PM)

Well I dunno what Christian music you're listening too... I don't listen to most of it cause I find it so "fluffy"...

I really don't listen to a lot of Christian music either but I do love this song which is a bit sad but hopeful called "Love Me" by JJ Heller.

Solus -> RE: The Saddest Songs In Christian Music (6/1/2008 10:52:32 PM)

On the Christian radio station half the songs are people singing about how pointless life is without God and crying thmselves to sleep. The other half is incredibly fluffy and pointless (cartoon song anyone)?

Well, since you didn't write "modern" or "today's" Christian music, here's one I remember a little of from when I was a little girl.

I just tried to find it on the Internet, and this was all I got:
quote:

Great Judgment, The
DESCRIPTION: "I dreamt that the great judgment morning Had dawned and the trumpet had blown...." The singer describes the scene before God's throne "as the lost was told of their fate" and the poor, widows, and orphans rewarded. The rich man's money does not save him
AUTHOR: unknown
EARLIEST DATE: 1925 (Randolph)
KEYWORDS: religious death Hell

REFERENCES (1 citation):
Randolph 618, "The Great Judgment" (2 texts, 2 tunes)

Ahh! I found it on an African forum! here it is:

quote:

I dreamt that the great Judgement Morning had dawned
And the trumpet had blown.
I dreamt that the Nations had gathered to Judgement
Before the White Throne.
From the Throne came a bright shining angel
And stood on the land and the sea.
And so with his hands raised to Heaven.
And the time was no longer to be.

Refrain

And what a weeping and wailing
As the Lord set all of their fate.
They cried for the rocks and the mountains.
They prayed but their was too late
They prayed but their was too late.

The rich man was there,
But his money had melted and vanished away.
The pauper, he stood in the Judgement,
His debts were too heavy to bear.
The great man was there,
But his greatness when the day came,
Was left far behind
The angels that opened the Record,
Not a trace of his greatness could find.

Refrain

The moral man came to the Judgement
But his self-righteousness could not do.
The man who had crucified Jesus
Had passed off his moral men do.
That man that had cooled off salvation
Not today get through by and by
No time not to think of religion
At last they had fine time to die.

Refrain (x2)

The American version was:
quote:

Verse 1
I dreamt that the Great Judgment Morning had dawned
And the trumpet had blown.
I dreamt that the nations had gathered
To judgment before the White Throne.
From the Throne came a bright shining angel
Who stood on the land and on sea.
And swore with his hand raised to Heaven.
That time was no longer to be.

Refrain:
And oh, what a weeping and wailing
As the lost were told of their fate.
They cried for the rocks and the mountains,
They prayed but their was too late.

Verse 2
The rich man was there, but his money
Had melted and vanished away.
The pauper, he stood in the judgment,
His debts were too heavy to bear.
The great man was there, but his greatness
When the day came, was left far behind
The angels that opened the record,
Not a trace of his greatness could find.

Refrain

Verse 3
The moral man came to the judgment
But his self-righteous acts would not do.
The men who had crucified Jesus
Had passed off as moral men, too.
The one who had passed off salvation:
"Not today! I'll get saved by and by --
No time now to think of religion."
At last he had found time to die.

Refrain (x2)

The following is the song my husband chose -- another old song, written by Martin Luther. It starts off as such a GREAT song, then it falls into stark depression. I told him that because there are wonderful parts to it, it is up to him to use those parts, then write new lyrics to go with them.

The great parts are in blue -- the negatives in black. You'll recognize it. This song is Public Domain and Royalty Free, not to be sold

1. A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood
of mortal ills prevaling.

For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

2. Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right man on our side,
the man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabbaoth, his name,
from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.

3. And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo, his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

4. That word above all earthly powers,
no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours,
thru him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill;
God's truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever.

Tuesday Mourning - Holy Soldier

I Wish We'd All Been Ready - I'm not sure who did this one. It's from the 70s, I believe.

I still miss you by Hawk Nelson. It's pretty sad. It talks about someone dying from cancer. My grandmom died of cancer so it is really sad for me when I listen to it!!

Deathbed - Relient K... at least, the first 7 minutes or so of that song...there is alot of hope in the last 2 minutes :)

By the way, does anyone know who this story is about? I figured the band may have explained it a little by now.

He brings people to your door and you turn them away and smile and say "God bless you, be in peace" and all heaven just weeps...

Anathallo- To Gary and Marcus: The Sovereignty of God is Omnipresent

Anathallo- A Song for Christine

One of the best and most original bands in Christian music. And they're not even derivative! Impossible.

Disciple - Things Left Unsaid

Chokes me up every time I hear it. Kevin Young wrote it about when his grandfather was passing away.

"Jenny"- Steve Taylor along with Humble's mention of "Baby Doe"

"Dear Mr. Jesus" - I forget the group's name, but when the kid sang, "Please don't tell my daddy that my mommyhits me too" would have me in tears!

Bobby -> RE: The Saddest Songs In Christian Music (6/4/2008 9:13:50 AM)

"A Baby's Prayer" - Kathy Troccoli, Scott Brasher.

Consider when the song was written, and its theme, you'll just ponder why, oh why, has our government supported killing babies.

It was by Powersource featuring Susan, who I believe was only 9 years old at the time. Here is an interesting article in Time Magazine that was about how the song became a success back in 1987.
