danas_mom -> Question about food stamps redemption (6/1/2008 8:01:46 PM)

A friend of mine recently divorced and relocated herself and her two children cross country, and is using food stamps for a short time while she gets her finances settled.

Last month was the first month she received anything, and the funds were deposited a couple of weeks late. Because of that, it's due to deposit more next week and she still has $250 left to spend. She's wondering if she needs to go ahead and spend the balance now, or will it be ok if there's a balance on there when the new funds deposit?

Thanks for any help! (If anyone wants to PM me instead of posting publicly, please feel free.)

I'm not sure but food stamps are run by the state so its probably different in each one.

Here in CA they roll over to the next month, AFAIK.

Oops, I meant to mention she's in North Carolina, in case the state makes a difference.

She needs to contact the state or whoever is her contact, whoever she turned the paperwork into.

They will know more than we will and it will be 'official info'

Most states let it roll over, however, if I were her I probably would call and ask ASAP tomorrow morning just in case she does need to spend it. She can figure out the best way to use it up knowing she has more coming in.

Here in WA I was told you have until the 8th of the following month to spend it. I suspect, however, that they simply don't check. She can call her caseworker and ask.

What state is your friend living in now?

In all the states that we have lived in, any balance remained in the account until the card holder spent it.

While asking the caseworker, seems like a great idea, it can be close to impossible to reach them.

Peace,
Anne

She is in North Carolina.

And yes, any time she has had any questions it takes 5 - 10 calls to get anyone to respond. [8|]

Spend it now, make calls and find out before next month is over.

In PA they roll over.

Tell her not to use them up unless she is going to be able to use all the food she buys. See here: http://www.fns.usda.gov/fsp/faqs.htm#18

They DO carry over and cannot be removed by the state until 9 months or 12 months of inactivity. When I had food stamps, I didn't use it all and was able to buy groceries for one more month after we asked to be removed from the program. If she spends them now just to spend them she may end up without enough to buy food later and soem of what she buys now may spoil. I hope that helps.

Thanks everyone!!

PrincessDonna -> RE: Question about food stamps redemption (6/4/2008 12:07:04 PM)

They carry over for 9 months here (NY).

If she does need to spend them, or is concerned about it, she can and should buy nonperishable things with it. Stock the pantry.
